If it gets better with saline solution, andd if the Nasonex helped for a while, I think you should definitely try Mucinex for a few weeks and see if that does anything.

Hi all,
I've had the same problem for years. It's very embarrassing, when you're among other people.
I don't think it is food allergy. All of us posting here have the same problem, and I don't think we all eat the same thing (be it even one thing)
I tired Apple Cider Vinegar as suggested by one of the members that posted here, but it did not help. So anyone that wondered, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR has been tested, and that's not the cure :-).
It might be acid reflux, but I've also tried over-the-counter acid reducres, but they also did not help.
I don't know what disease this is, but it is humiliating. So if anyone has found anything that works please let us know.
Thanks.

I'm sorry for not posting sooner. I've seen an infectious diseases Dr and they can't culture any thing he did however say that the tests we have can't find but some of the vast number of things that can infect a person. When I asked if someone would be willing to try to find it I was told no one he knew of would be willig to try. Dissapointing to say the least. I'll be back soon, hang in there all.

I did write a great big message, but the system wouldnt allow it and now deleted it. All it said was, i am depressed that i have discovered that i have cleared my throat over 6 million times, for 10 years, and that i think the MSG and sugar cutting sound like my. Decreasing anxiety halved my problem, and ive had much weirder excuses than some here. I have been told i breathe through my nose too much, and that i could have sagging skin in my throat.
I HAVE CREATED A FACEBOOK GROUP CALLED 'I CLEAR MY THROAT' AND WOULD LIKE EVERYONE TO JOIN, SO WE CAN GET A BETTER LIGHT ON THIS.

I've had this problem for 12+ years (i'm 21). I've noticed that it usually happens with any really thick foods, or any sweet foods. Anytime after drinking choc. milk, or eating a candy bar I can pretty much guarantee that I'll be "clearing my throat" for 20 minutes.
I haven't been able to narrow it down any further than that. I was diagnosed with acid reflux, even though i've never had any other symptoms except this one. I've tried prescription & over the counter meds, and no luck.
It's getting very old, and very obnoxious. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try or things that have helped them? (Yes, iv'e read this thread and will try a couple).

Hi, ive had this problem for a few days now, the feeling of something being stuck in my throat though it doesnt obstruct my breathing or eating in anyway (if anything it feels better while eating and drinking)
i havent got a cough or the need to clear my throat, more the need to swallow very deeply (which can sometimes hurt if im trying too hard to move whatevers tehre)
it was mentioned at some point on these forums about your sinuses emptying down your throat rather than out of your nose (my nose does feel surprisingly clear these past few days), i do feel like theres a fair bit of mucus back there at times, could this be the problem? at other times though it feels as if theres actually something stuck there quite deep in my throat
It gets worse throughout the day, with the evening being the most troublesome time, i did recently have the hiccups but i cant remember how soon after them this occured

Hi everyone, this is the same old song and dance, the throat is the same. I find mouth moisturizing spray helps a little when sprayed on the back of the throat. It's not an answer though. I'm going to go to the Dr. and have them put a camera down there and look as deep as they can go, it feels like they should find some kind of irregularity. Mine is an old problem 20yrs. but it feels burned maybe from clearing forever. When you visit this thread please come back and keep checking and posting. I've been telling the Drs. I've been seeing and I hope they are getting an idea about this, they have indicated they're looking though so thats better than the answer I got the first time I went to the Dr. for this "just live with it" granted not an answer but at least they know I'm serious. Good luck.

Hello everyone, I have had every single symptom mentioned on this throat clearing forum except for heartburn. At first notice that I was having acid reflux, I attributed it to sudden weight gain (25lb) I was experiencing after turning 50, and then I suspected hormones might be the culprit, so I went to the Dr. who gave me a colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time, which discovered that I had a rather large hernia at the opening of my stomach where it meets the esophagus. Prior to these exams, I too had been checked by my ENT physician, who discovered a major sinus infection, for which I took antibiotics and cleared that. Still the throat clearing was present along with some coughing in the evening, so then the ENT doctor referred me to a Cardio Dr., who discovered after a battery of test that I had hypertension (high blood pressure), he then prescribed the first of three medications for which I was clearly allergic to from all the excessive coughing and throat clearing I was having. I then went to another Cardio to discuss the blood pressure, throat clearing and what could be done and he prescribed Nexium twice a day, and recommend that I divide up the last prescribed blood pressure pill (Hydro??? I think it is the lowest one you can get and basically it’s a water pill) into 4 quarters and take a quarter with the Nexium twice a day. He also has me walking a mile or two a day. All together this has decreased the amount of throat clearing considerably and hardly no coughing at all any more unless I forget to take my blood pressure med or have a soda and that wonderful hazelnut coffee creamer. (sugar and salt are culprits) My gastro Dr. is going to remove the hernia in May and suspects that this will eliminate most of the acid reflux that I have which may in turn eliminate my need for blood pressure medication.

Hey,
From what I can remember this started for me when I was in about the 9th grade I would say, I'm now a freshman in college and can say that it has gotten significantly better. The things that I've done to improve it are literally force myself not to hack anything up even if that means about to throw up or gagging through it and as i did that more and more I noticed that it got easier and easier and the symptoms less and less. My method for this was alternating breathing between the mouth and the nose until i could finally have relief from the constant hacking. The next method of things to do is definantly try what someone had posted earlier which is to drink water every time you feel like clearing your throat and within three weeks the symptoms should be gone. I also have been taking a mushroom that cleans the body of toxins and I have noticed my symptoms have gotten a lot less worse from that. My new goal is to completely alleviate them when I exercise and after I eat a very large meal. I will keep in touch and urge others to try what I have done, it will get better trust me..
If anyone is interested they can reach me on my e-mail _[removed]_ just leave throat clearing in the subject line so I know it isn't spam.

Me too! Coughing/throat clearing after eating, especially breakfast, although if I delay eating long enough in the morning I will start coughing anyway. Later in the day, each meal, or even a tiny snack will set off the throat clearing.
My thoughts regarding GERD...I wonder if simply not getting relief from acid reducing medicines means that we really AREN'T experiencing GERD. Couldn't stomach contents, no matter how acidic (or not!), still rise up during the night, irritate the throat and sinus, causing them to produce excess mucus for protection and drive us crazy?
If you've had a scope that showed no evidence of GERD, does this mean they see no damage done by acid or they see no evidence based on the physical structures that contents could leave the stomach in the wrong direction?
I don't know about the rest of you but I rarely cough at night. That's not to say that stomach liquid isn't slowly creeping it's way up my throat provoking mucus production that upon rising will want to drain.
Has anyone tried sleeping on extra pillows or one of those wedge pillows? If so what happened? One night I slept on the couch due to hubbie's snoring and being more upright on the arm of the couch caused me to cough during the night, gravity continuing to drain things! I guess a cure is to remain horizontal!
After reading a little about our vocal chords I'm concerned ours have chronic inflammation. I get a bit hoarse after a bout of morning coughing. I mentioned to my doc that it's a joke in our family that when we eat, out come the tissues. "Oh my nose found out I'm eating!". Doc mumbled something about histimine being released when we eat (apparently whether allegic or not), add this to our already irritated throats that feel closed off by mucus and the cycle continues.
I've often wondered if this could be a systematic thing, like an endocrine disorder. I know ovarian cysts are pretty common, but does anyone in the forum have a big problem with them? They can be the result of an endocrine disorder which also controls secretory glands in the body. I seem to recall a post about a goiter and obviously if we had one big enough to cause our coughing we'd notice it, but goiters are swollen thyroid glands, part of the endocrine system. Has anyone had any blood work done?
Well I wish I had answers for all of us, just some food for thought. That won't make us cough!

WOW never would I have guessed so many people with the same issue as myself. Like all of you I have been given the Nexium, Aciphex, etc, with no avail. I have tried the Flonase and other nasal sprays, no luck. I was scoped and had a the barium swallow done was told all was fine there. Had an ENT doctor do a CT scan and said I had a deviated septum and chronic sinusitis which is what is most likely causing my issues. I have not had the suggested surgery yet for the deviated septum, but am seriously thinking of having it done soon. In reading through the posts, wondered if anyone else experiences headaches, and pressure behind their nose? I have found for me chocolate and ice cream are the worse things I can have. My only "cure" is to lie on my left side.. anyone else notice that alleviates symptoms for them?

Thats what I just bought today! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will help the issue. Just like all of you, I have been constantly clearing my throat for over a year! This is enough to drive a person crazy.
I took mucinex for allergies a few months ago, but just for a couple of days. I didn't even finish the bottle. But I did notice that my throat clearing seemed to calm down for a few days after that. I'm going to take mucinex for 2 weeks and see what happens.
I will repost about the results. Good luck guys!

When I took Mucinex, it took about 10 days to start working so you may want to try it for a month. I stopped taking it just to see if there was a difference and the throat clearing came back about 2 weeks after I stopped. I hope it helps you too! I think it's okay for long term use but I am still researching that. Let me know if it helps you.

Wow. Interesting how many people suffer from the same thing and how unresolved it is.
I have been plagued with throat congestion for about three years, I also had a bout when I was thirty that eventually went away. (I think I took a ton of Sudafed at the time).
I have been to GPs, specialists, homeopaths, tried Chinese doctors, naturopaths , various self diagnoses..... Nothing much helped.
What has helped are:
WATER. I am pretty sure the main culprit is dehydration. Drink water every hour. It will take a few days for your body to rehydrate. Avoid stress. Alcohol. Caffeine. Salted foods. And anything else that aggravates. I also have problems with oils and some dairy, like cheeses.
NETI POTS. Every time I went to a naturopath, they would look at my tongue and say my body was toxic. Within a few days of using the neti pot, my tongue was clean. So obviously what was on my tongue was post nasal drip. Water and the Neti rinse both help to keep the tongue (and the throat) clear.
Those are the big ones.
Apples also seem to help. Water with honey and lemon seems to help. Good luck everyone.
