I know exactly what I have.

It is not psychological, stress, anxiety or anything else.

It is purely physical phenomenan.

It is like any other joint clicking.

as in TMJ jaw joint clicking.

only problem is, unlike other joints, throat must be used very often,
and it is horrible discomfort because of the location.

It is thyroid, chricoid, etc cartilage sliping over each other.

can it be surgically corrected? may be. theoratically yes.

but this is very uncommon problem, not too many ENT's even know about it. even less actually treated or even did any type of surgery for it.

so any surgical procedure is going to be experimental, and out come
uncertain at best.

there is an article, as some one above mentioned. of UCLA and U-Utah
performing surgery to trim off those cartilages, so that would be
pretty much only hope for people suffering from this rare condition.

folks here will eventually be able to click their throat at will, just like
I can. and no ENT can't deny that there is a clear and present click
and people across the room will be able to here the damned click sound.

I too have this click/popping whenever i turn my head to the right. Its been going on for about 6 months now and hasnt gotten better. I do have stretches to do for other things but the person im seeing about it said stretching should help... but it does. it all started as i was swallowing some food and it got caught as it was going down just after i swallowed it. Ever since ive had this weirdness in my throat and it almost feels like my throat muscle on the side of my adams apple is tender or sore? Its hard to explain. IF anyone gets any further information id love to hear. Thanks, Brendan

I have been having this problem for the past year. My lymph node on my right side feels swollen and my ear also hurts. This week, every time I swallow saliva I hear a clicking sound. I never had this issue before. I also had the white balls on the left side of my tonsils last week. But for some reason only the right side seems to feel like I have something stuck inside the tonsil pore. I tried poking it and nothing came out. I am really frustrated and don't know what else to do. I also read on this website that drinking apple cider vinegar helps. I tried it when I got a sore thoat and it seemed to help. I am drinking some as we speak to see if it helps again and I already feel like the swelling is going down. I hope it works. I don't know what seems to be the cause of it though. I do stress out a lot and I have noticed that it tends to swell up when I stress. But there may also be other factors... who knows...help!!!!!!!!!!

I have been having this problem since November 2007. I have been to the ENT twice now, on time with a scope, 2nd time, just feeling it. I have had CT scans, xrays, and been on antibiotics at least 5 times due to this and still no help. Some days the clicking is worse than other days, and when my throat is really dry, it seems to be at its worse. It is on my right side.

How can you "suffer" from that? It's just a click.. Isn't it? Or is it too annoying?

I have had the clicky throat too for some years. I dont really worry too much about it. Its just my creaky body XD

Its strange you guys mention that its phsycogenic. See I was abused by my grandfather for years as a child. It came out later in life after he died cos my sister who it happened to also, told my mum. My sister was in a real bad way about the whole thing. Whereas I just played it down all the time like its nothing, I think out of embarrassment more than anything. Maybe deep down i am actually upset about it? Although really im not. even though i made that connection... errrr.. damn!!!!!!

To everyone who is having an issue with clicking or a feeling of something stuck in their throat - in chinese medicine, we refer to this as "plum pit qi" ("qi" is stuck in throat like a plum pit). We treat this condition quite successfully with acupuncture and if need be, herbs. However, our treatments are not a one size fits all. We look at the underlying cause or root of the problem and then treat that as well as the symptoms. Look for a "licensed" acupuncturist in your area (not "certified"). If anyone has any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me and I will try to answer your questions as best as I can.

Hiya,

I had flu at Christmas and a sore throat for a long time after (weeks), It was around this time that I noticed quite suddenly one morning whilst laying in bed that my throat clicked when I swallowed.

I continued every time I swallowed and I began to panic (I suffer from mild OCD/anxiety) especially as my non-smoking grandmother died of throat cancer.

The GP examined my neck and throat but didn't really know what it night be. I have been back numerous times and am mainly fobbed off.

I *do* think that it is partially psychlogical as the more I worry about it the more it clicks but when I relax and stop fretting I can swallow normally much of the time. I do find it is worse upon waking.

A recent development has been that when I press the left side of my neck from the outside (around the level of my adams apple) I can feel a popping/grinding sensation.

The last couple of days I have had a sore throat on the left and my neck has felt sore on the left particularly when I press it (of course ot could be sore because I keep prodding it!!)

I have had this thread saved in my favourites to read when my throat clicking gets me in a panic as it is really reassuring to hear I am not the only one with this.

I am going to go to my GP this week and insist she refer me to an ENT, but the thought of having the camera scares me (I have an active gag reflex!!) - can they sedate you to do it?

Do I need to be worrying about this? Could it be something scary?

I have developed a slight click at the right side of my throat. I thought I would be the only person with this till I searched the web. I have been researching for hours and read all I can about it but to know specific avail. I have developed a click as if something is jumping out of place when I swallow but just on the right side of the thyroid. I can't find any lumps bumps in my neck that could be abnormal and may be causing it!!! maybe it is anxiety in my case as a do suffer from it, but all the same could it cause a clicking sensation?.

The problem is it causes more anxiety as you automatically think it is some sort of cancer and the web does not help. I do play fight with my young sons, one was swinging around my neck, maybe the have disjointed something?

I have come to the conclusion that if you have no change in voice, no unexplained prolonged sore throat, no unexplained cough, or not coughing up small amounts of blood in your phlegm, no unexplained lump in your neck, no abnormalities with you mouth or tongue, feel perfectly fit and well apart from the paranoid impulse to think it is a life threatening tumour, it is not going to be throat cancer or a type of it.

perhaps if we all stop prodding and poking our neck and constantly swallowing be it at different angles as we all are doing and the people who reading this have been doing! it may have chance to go away on its own!. I will give it a go and get back to you all. Good luck with your click's and treatments.

I have a similar problem, but it only occurs when I inhale. I am 25, and smoked and drank heavily for 4+ years up until two years ago. About a year ago I started to have a clicking sound in my throat while inhaling. The doctors simply diagnosed it as anxiety/panic attacks...since I told them I had a hard time breathing. When I drink alcohol it becomes especially hard to breathe. I'm not sure what the isue is but it can be very scary. Hoping to see another doctor soon to have this examined.

Wow there re really is a clicky adams apple club.  Sorry...  mine has been bothering me for 6 months.  About the same amount of time my Alopecia areata started.  Its starting to hurt and clicks all the time. I am a smoker. Im tired alot.  I have tendonitis in the hands and forearms?  (could be unrelated) I have acid reflux and snore really loud at night. I went to the dr for my hair and wrist pain.  Im out of work now when I go back I guess I get that checked out next.  Keep you posted

I had my throat popping around Adam's apple area and jaw clicking on my left side for around 10 years... it's not painful, but very, very annoying. Within time I managed to hold my head a certain way to get rid of the neck popping and I don't open my mouth to wide to stop the jaw popping. It's not too bad, I became used to it and many times don't notice.
It can't be stress, as I'm completely stress free.
