The exact effect of Concerta on the brain is not yet clear. Evidence shows that amphetamine like compounds are linked with Alzheimers and Parkinsons, yet diet medicines with ephedrine are still sold all over the world. Concerta is also a stimulant that affects neurotransmitter levels in a similar manner as amphetamines and cocaine. You may think that you are helping her now, but you can make her more susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases. Instead of treating your daughters problem with chemicals, rather get behind the root of the problem. Our diets are full of vile things such as colourants, flavours and artificial preservatives, our bodies do not posses the biochemical mechanisms toe detoxify these compounds and the effects that they have on us an be very detrimental and may be a cause of ADHD and ADD as well as numerous autoimune disseases. Do your daughter a favour and read food labels before you buy anything. Put her on a diet free of preservatives, artificial antioxidants such as TBHQ, and gluten. Cut back on dairy, but make sure that her calcium needs are not compromised by giving her other foods rich in calcium. Stay away from processed food. Candy and soft drinks are the biggest evils. Rather give her some home made Granola and nuts and fruits. This should sort out the weight gain problem too.

I have ADHD, so does my boyfriend and his youngest brother. By changing our diets have all managed to control our symptoms to such an extend that we do not need medication any more. As a post graduate student in Biochemistry, I understand that we really are what we eat. If you cut down on processed foods in your house, you will not only solve your daughters attention problems, but also take a step in avoiding cancer and autoimmune disease.

Hi you really need to get over yourself. I have a 9 and 11 year old on meds and without them they can not function at school. Their grades went from failing to passing. Some children need the help it is not just them being a "kid" and let me tell that my kids are better kids with the meds. They have more friends and are more socially outgoing.

I never reply to post but who is anyone to judge a person b/c they give their kid meds that they need? if your kid was a diabetic you would give them their medication??? A child/adult that suffers from ADD/ADHD has a valid medical condition and should be addressed as such. Each person is different, and I respect everyone's opinion and it is YOUR decision to not medicate your child b/c you don't believe in medication for a child but I have seen many children and adults that do very well on their medication and then those that do not do well and if you can help your child and medication will help them not be frustrated, the meds work for them, then give them the medication. I have a 22 year old son that suffered at my ignorance b/c I didn't believe in medicating a child and finally I gave in and tried medication and GUESS WHAT it worked!!!! We started him in the 3rd grade and that was after I tried diets and everything else, we tried low dose ritalin and it worked great except he was so nauseas so we put him on adderall and he did not do well with that medication either and we landed on concerta and he gained 50lb that year and that was it, he wouldn't take any medication after that and today 5/6/13 he came from the MD and said he can't take it anymore and asked for concerta b/c college is brutal, he says that his brain runs miles and is all over the place and concentration is the hardest thing. I dont have ADD but I have 2kids that do and I respect parents decisions but if all non med treatment fails then try medication, i am not agreeing to have a kid on 20 meds, and i have seen that but dont judge a parent for medicating their child, it isnt fair to the child

I agree so much! I think each parent should take this drug on their own for few months and see how you feel being on concerta. You will feel high! you will feel your heart beating so fast you wont know how to catch up, your hunger is gone, you are like a zombie, and without this drug you are completely worthless, cannot even leave your bed. You become so dependent! It is a very powerful drug! Very! Before you give this to your child, please understand that what you are giving to your own child is extremely powerful and for what?! so they can sit in school and pay attention. I raised three A+ students without any medication and they would have been prescribed to this drug easily. I don't know each circumstance but i do know that this drug is terrible for our children.
