I also have had the smell for two years +. I think I finally may have an answer. I was diagnosed with H. Pylori on monday. It is the main cause of stomach ulcers. I went to the doctor monday because of constant nausea and stomach pain. He suspects an ulcer and did the test for H. Pylori. I was positive. He is doing an endoscope on friday. I feel the two are related. He said the bacteria can be killed with a treatment of triple antibiotics (3 types at once). He said even if I don't have an ulcer, I need to be treated to kill the H. Pylori, or I will get an ulcer. I will post my results when I get them. I'll let you know if the smell goes away after treatment.

I had a smell when i was younger like the ones your describing , I figured out it was a back tooth that had rotted on the inside. I didnt figure it out till it broke finally then when I put my tongue in the break i could taste it I was sure I found the smell. I had the tooth pulled and never had it again. Kinda gross but hey lol

I've had the same thing! Just occasionally I get a quick whiff of ammonia when I'm, say at a social gathering, and I know it's me not the surroundings. It only lasts for 20 seconds or so but it can be quite powerful at the time. Good to know I'm not the only one to experience it. My sense of smell isn't great at the best of times (I blame a nose operation some years ago) and it may be linked to that.

My dog got a bacterial infection (yeast). She smelled like this smell I am smelling. The dog habitually sits by me on the sofa and sleeps on the bed with my wife and me. This smell is similar to when my wife bakes cookies; also when she makes Buffalo wings.
It has a sometimes sweet, sometimes vinegary smell - like a continuum between the two. I notice it more when at home; more when on the sofa or in bed; but smell it at work, and anywhere else I go. But it smells like the dog's infection also.
I have tried wet paper towels up my nose; snorting warm salt water; putting anti-bacterial foam soap up my nose, etc.
I am on Prozac and I see comments linking to depression. It also seems worse where there is humidity. I am also on blood thinners and considered it might be due to nasal bleeding and dried blood, since I have had some blood. I am breathing fine - no stuffy nose, but also considered it may be sinus infection. The vet said what my dog has could not infect my sinuses - of course he isn't a people doctor.
As a reference point, I have in the past had one episode of continually smelling cigarette smoke that wasn't there - that went away that I believe WAS related to sinus infection. And I've previously had a copper taste and smell that was cured over time by frequent brushing and flossing.
I suspect a sinus condition. Maybe some of these things strike a cord with others.

This is how I deal with my ammonia smelling problem (it used to drive me nuts!) Use moisturizer to massage your sinus areas EXTERNALLY. Look at a picture of your sinus areas (they are bigger than you think) and gently rub them. Include the fleshy part at the base of your nose; gets the mucus flowing. Blow your nose (gently) and work a tissue inside your nostrils to remove the mucus. Do this (external!) massage in a hot shower with liquid soap; seems to work better. Perhaps the ammonia smell is a kind of sinus infection or imbalance. Before using nasal sprays or putting water through your nose or other harsh measures, give this technique a try (can't hurt, works for me!)

CURED!!! I finally found the source of my ammonia smell.
Symtom: Smell ammonia when breathing deeply through nose. Sometimes stronger than others, but almost always present.
Source: Rotting food/bacteria between my teeth.
Cure: Floss. Here's the trick: between each pair of teeth, smell the floss before moving to the next pair. If your cause is the same as mine, you will eventually find one or more pair that stink like you can't imagine – like throat bombs for those lucky enough to have smelled them. The smell is produced by the bacteria generated by rotting food and, anywhere in the mouth/throat capable of trapping food, is a also capable of producing the bacteria/smell. Make sure all the stinky pairs don't stink any more.. rinse well with water hydrogen peroxide.
Smell gone! If the smell persists or if you have no stinky pairs, it's possible that you have fissures in your throat: small holes or pockets where food can get trapped. This is where throat bombs (the stinkiest substance known to man) are hatched. Search the web for different methods of getting them out.
Hope this helps – please let me know of any success!

The taste and smell of ammonia in EVERYTHING is driving me crazy. And yes I have a cold coming on. A really good one this time. It just started after I made pancakes for my husband with Krusteaz Buttermilk mix (just a fyi). I can smell and taste it in water, coffee, everything. I even tried eating mints (they taste really bad right now). The thought of shoving them up my nose sounded good to me. Sure hope this goes away soon.
