I'm a 52 year old male and I have the same problem. I've had complete respiratory work up done and physical but I have no answers. I too am very frustarated. I have had this for the better part of 4 years. One thing I noticed. When I'm busy (anything that keeps me busy) I find the yawning and needing that deep breath goes away. The second i'm not busy it starts.

Same thing for me, Im 42 and it started almost a year ago. The needing to sign and yawn constantly to get enough air. I had a doc visit and he found nothing physical. He gave me some kind of anti anxiety stuff and it works..but it knocks me out too so not practical. I get it just before I go to bed, when Im at the movie theatre (annoyingly) when I feel restricted and cant 'move' more freely I get panicky symptoms. I never ever had any of this before in my life. It sucks and seems like there is no answer. I hope it'll just go away someday..

I guess I'm a little late to reply to this but oh well...I have had this same problem for YEARS...im 39 now but remember dealing with this at least since I was a teen. Just like you said, it's a feeling of being uncomfortable, a tightness. When I yawn and draw in a deep breath, sometimes it will relieve the sensation. It feels like something in the chest or lungs opens up, or releases. But very soon, less than a minute later the sensation starts coming back. Some days it is continuous all day, and other days it doesnt really happen at all. I don't buy the c**p about stress, I've never been a depressed or stressed out person, and as I said this has been happening to me since I was a kid. For years I've been trying to figure out what this is

Same here man, Im scared to even sit down on the train for fear people see me 'acting weird' trying to just breath normally. The doc I went to just tried to blow it off as Acid Reflux or maybe Im stressed, sure I get stressed but so does everyone. Not THAT bad..reading the posts here and in other sites it looks like there is no solution. We're stuck with it.

I was reading something very interesting.  It said that most doctors are not aware of this

but if you have difficulty breathing out - it is a symtom of asthma.  If you have difficulty

taking a breath in - it is a symtom of acid reflux.

I started having this problem about a year and a half ago and I took asthma meds which did nothing, not to mention I've had asthma since I was younger and this isn't really what it feels like. I was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago with thyroid disease and was told this might be the cause. Look up the symptoms of thyroid disorder and if some apply to you, get tested.

Nothing wrong with my thyroid, but I do have Acid Reflux but taking Omeprazole neutralizes it, but maybe its still affecting the insides even tho I dont feel it?

Im 36 yrs

old and have breathing issues for about 4 years. Feeling that you cant get a deep breath is scary! Which makes you panic, causing your heart to race. Also have very bad back, rib and chest pain, joint pain, no energy, depression symptoms (because i felt like c**p) I thought stress and hormones had something to do with the way i was feeling for years. My doctors ruled out heart disease, gallbladder disease, asthma, thyroid, pinched nerves, fractures ect. Recently, i started the south beach diet which basically is protein and veggies for the 2 weeks. Really didnt pay attention about how i was feeling during that time, but i knew my symptoms were not that bad. On day 16, i ate bowl of whole wheat ceral and with in hours i couldnt breath and was even wheezing! After that I started a gluten free diet for 5 weeks and i felt great! introduced gluten again in my diet and all my symptoms came back. Im totally sold that i have a gluten intolerance. its worth a try if your suffering. After researching the symptoms of gluten intolerance ive been suffering since i was kid. Please try it you may get some relief.....

I'm 38 year old male and I've been experiencing this constant impulse to take a deep breath since I was 28, ten freaking years! It gets worst at some points and then subsides, but not entirely. I've had every test known to man,so it seems, everything checks out normal. I get the typical responses, acid reflux, anxiety, blah, blah, etc. I5 seems that a lot is related to how my stomach is feeling..... It could be that my stress caused by this feeling is causing my stomach to feel like c**p? Anyways a nice deep full breath always relieves the sensation for a few minutes, and then the sensation arises again. Its seems like death by a thousand cuts! I did look into air hunger or hidden hyperventilating, which makes the most sense. I re breathed into a paper bag ( never plastic very dangerous) for about 1 minute and it seems to re balance my Oxygen, and carbon dioxide levels, its the same process used to treat hyperventilation. I have to say I believe that the human mind is extremely powerful and has caused this self perpetuation of this problem. The answer to the million dollar question is, how to get ride of this...... I would have to say unlearn this habit ( I haven't gotten there yet!) I know from reading that an unbalance in your Oxygen , and carbon dioxide levels will give you the many sensations that are reported by all of the posts. I would like to add dont give into the fear and defeat that this sensation causes, try like hell to continue your day and life the best you can. God Bless

I also have the feeling of the need to take a deep breath. I went to an allergist, I am not allergic to anything and do not have asthma, he told me to keep taking my nasal spray because i have sinus problems. I went to the emergency room because the breathing problem would not go away, they did a chest xray and some breathing tests, the tests showed nothing wrong. They told me i have anxeity. I found this hard to believe because the breathing problem would happen when i didn't feel stressed about anything. I went to a pulmunalogist, nothing wrong. I went to an ent because i thought it might be the nasal spray. He didn't think so. They all think it's anxeity, maybe they're right because zanax does help. I still wonder if the nazal spray has anything to do with it. Hope this helps.

Hi there, I believe stress may have something to do with the feeling however through my experience, research I have found the problems stems from a pinched nerve in the chest, traps, shoulder blade area which affects the air passage way as well as oxygen to the brain. What helps is to get massages... . When I use a massager in these areas a long with getting massages my breathing resumes to normal. Even an adjustment...

If you sit at the computer alot get up and move aroud more... I believe the answer stems from the pinched nerves. Pinched nerves can cause havoc on the brain getting oxygen, etc., etc
