It's so simple, no wonder no one is getting it.
To the Pot Smokers: Are you coughing up mucous, with black specs in it? Check your BONG WATER, and BOWL. Know how things resinnate, and then people scrape it and smoke it? Smoke your phlegm then, cause it's full of resin! Lungs gather resin just like your bowl or bong. It's got to come out or it will eventually block your air pathways, or some area of your pulmonary system.
To the Cigarette Smokers: No you aren't coughing up your lungs. Do you smoke weed? It's resin!
To people that smoke pot and cigs: Just start praying to God, delete your porn, and make peace with your family and friends, cause you ain't quitting anytime soon, stop pretending. You're just hateful to your body...

Hi all,
Yep I smoke too 10-15 a day and have done so for over 20 years. I'm in my forties now. I got breathless and doctor diagnosed COPD. But I'm told this breathless disease is incurable. But hear this. I live next to an airport and discovered I have really bad reaction to butylphenol, this is the toxic chemical from plane fumes, but contained in petrol/kerosene, so car fumes will do same thing. I HAVE NEVER coughed up black stuff, but recently have and I am sure it's the polution. OK, OK, I know smoking doesnt help, but I am only breathless when near the petrol/plane fumes. If I go away on holiday, I have clear great lungs and can breath easy. My peak flow readings increase by 100-150 when I am away from cars and planes. All I'm saying is this guys...If you leave near an airport, or near a busy road, go away for a week for some sea air and see if your breathing improves. If you work in a clean air con building, the clean air will open your airways and help you to cough up the c**p. Yes of course it is good to get it out, but I'm not a doctor, but neither do I believe doctors are always right. I am extremely allergic to butylphenol, but doctors want to write me off as COPD [because I still smoke]. They must be careful not to misdiagnose some people. Inhalers kill me to because they contain a potentially toxic chemical used in nuclear reactors, as well as nut oil!!! Not enough research is done about butylphenol, at least here in UK, and mysteriously, no records exist on it either!

I've been smoking since I was 15 and I'm 24 now. I started smoking cigarettes at 16 and by 17 smoked a pack a day minimum until I was 19. I smoked heavily(7-12 large blunts a day) from 18-20, and a medium amount (2-5 small blunts a day) from 20-22. Up until this summer I would smoke at least a blunt daily, but have since stopped smoking them as frequently. I still will smoke about 5-15 bowls a day when I do, but some days don't at all. I have in the past half year switched from blunts and dry bowls to a bong and vaporizor, which the later does wonders for your lungs. At for the misinformation a lot of people have been saying there is no smoke whatsoever when using a vaporizor... unless you have it over 400 degrees F. Studies have been done and 2 carcinogens have been found when using a vape, which is a lot more when smoked.
I have noticed during my various times and wide quantities of use, I would have to say that smoking blunts and joints is just terrible for you. I would cough up not brown, or grey, or even black strands, totally black thick mucus almost as if I was sick but black. This was around the time I stopped my heavy usage and cigarettes, as it was disgusting to myself and more to others, and it was just annoying considering it wasn't just in the mornings but up to 5 times a day. Since then it has gotten much lighter in color, but when I smoke a lot of blunts for a short period of time, I get black strands sometimes greyish or brown. In the past months though I haven't experienced this as much, as I've been smoking a lot less then in the past, I've also been getting much more exercise and am living at a much higher altitude.
Basically it comes down to moderation, or switching the way you absorb your thc, vaporizors and cooking are much healthier solutions. Bongs come in second, but if you really just enjoy smoking joints and blunts, I'd recommend from experience not to overdo it... or at least don't complain when your chest feels like you have knifes stabbing your lungs when you fully inhale or can't fully inhale and end up coughing up tar like phleghm. Now I'm not being totally unrealistic and saying this will happen to everyone, but seriously if you smoke a ton of sh*t it is gonna put sh*t in your lungs even if it takes a couple years it will. I'm in great shape now and can run miles without stopping, so if you take care of yourself it probably does less damage than someone that just sits around (what I used to do) so there are other factors as well. Either way marijuana is an expectorant and makes you cough things up, unlike tobacco which as much as I used to love it when I smoked it, is hands down bad for you. If you continue to smoke cigarettes regardless of how much you smoke pot, you are going to damage to your lungs. I feel like everyone should have their own opinion and not try and impress it on others, but I really felt compelled as it effects me.

I am 34, and have been smoking herb since I was 17. I smoked cigars for a very brief period in my late teens, no more than a year at most. I only started having the Flem/black stuff problem in the last year or so. I did notice that it got worse when I either used a one hitter that was small, or just a regular bowl or rolled. I started using a water pipe to cut back on the particulate intake and it seems to have helped some, but I still get the morning hack and several times through out the day. I have used a vaporizer but found it to not work as efficiently as smoking a small amount through a water pipe. I would use up way more herb in one sitting with the vaporizer, maybe my vapor sux?? It's the kind that is a wood box with a heat element stem in the middle that a hose with a glass receiver connects to. I have considered that some of it is also environmental. I live near the junction of 2 major freeways in a stinky polluted crowded major city. I also noticed that it gets worse after I do any extensive house cleaning where I stir up dust. I am not so worried about it after reading so many posts here. I agree that it is good to have the material expelled, I just wish it would not be so frequent. I guess even if you decide to quit smoking, the condition will continue for a while after.
To address the phlegm when eating issue, you may just have food allergies. I react to most dairy and wheat based products, it has not stopped me from eating them, but I do notice an increase in mucus after eating them.
I am not any kind of medical expert, simply another smoker that is concerned about the phlegm problem.

For 3 weeks now, I thought I was the only one in this world with this problem. Sleepless nights, what else do you expect from a 22 year old living thousands of miles away from friends and family, just to finish my college studies. All this stress, was because of one thing. It was this unusual black specs that appeared on my phlegm.
There was nothing green or (maybe very little), just a phlegm thats close to grey in color with black dots. I was going like crazy. Oh and mind you, I've smoked green for around 3 years, and cigarettes for 4 years. I wanted to get a cheap solution, from the internet, trying forums and everything. Im sorry but my parents never paid a dime for my education abroad, so Its hard for you to expect me to pull out 60 dollars just to see the doctor.
But guess what? I took the issue to two doctors, its killing me. Both have really recommended me not to expose my body to the xrays, even though I had it done once 3 years ago (and specialist said my chest was perfect, I feel stupid). I asked the last doctor that I saw if I can go ahead and do the xray, PET and anything that can give me a damn answer of whats going on, because staying hanged is causing my studies to suffer. He went ahead and told me about his life as a smoker, and he said that it was great for me to see a doctor regarding my issue, but I have another problem I need to deal with, THE WORRY.
It reached a point that I was challenging myself, that either I become a damn lab rat and be tested daily, or just live life and dont give a flying f*** on which I did. I wanted death to come to me at one point, which I know is kinda crazy, but everything has its moments. I chose not to give a F***, started excersising, eating healthy. Phlegm is getting clearer and clearer and clearer.
2 weeks ago, I felt like I had the lungs of an infant/baby, now after I quit cigarettes, and slowed down on MJ (only joints now, 2 max a day, bongs paralyzes my damn throat), I feel like my lung's volume is six times larger. Its amazing how things become quickly towards the better the moment you stop.
Oh one advice to the readers, if you ever wanna do something bad in your life (smoking etc..) please do it right, dont smoke out of a pierced can or from plastic water bottles, get yourself something good for the years to come. Like one the readers above, I used to collect cig buts just to make a roll a large one, not anymore, not any longer.
Good luck with your fight everyone, dont let these things take over you, if you ever have something, either live with it and be a man, or just take it the doctor.

You may be coughing up stuff that gets in your throat from your sinuses. If you ever wear eye-makeup, it has the ability to go through the "tear duct" of your eye which leads to sinus and nasal cavities. This can color the phlegm black or speckle it black. Even if it's not eye makeup, other pollutants can collect in your sinuses and finally come out after being trapped for a long time. It drains down the back of your throat then you end up coughing it back up.

If your black phlegm is spotty, it's particulate. If it is stringly, and when you spit it into the sink it sticks like glue and is hard to wash off the basin, then it's from a jaw infection. If the infection gets to your blood, which it will eventually if the appropriate antibiotics aren't administered, then pulmonary effects like you have described will occur. The black phlegm is necrotized bone from your jaw, and it oozes out from a space between your gum and tooth, then trickles down your throat. It pools at the top of your lungs when you're sleeping, then you cough it up in the morning. DEMAND YOUR DENTIST X-RAY YOUR JAW. NOT YOUR TEETH, YOUR JAW. They won't find it with regular check-ups because they only X-ray teeth. Whatever you do, DONT go to a dentist with a 'Cavitat' machine. They are a scam, but unfortunately the ADA has been fighting with them so long that the ADA now pretends jaw infections don't happen, when in fact they're extremely common (if they weren't, the Cavitat hucksters wouldn't have a market for their snake-oil)
Also, if after you cough up the black phlegm, there is a sour taste in your mouth or you have chronic halitosis, it is DEFINITELY a jaw infection. But the incompetent medical and dental community will assume it is a sinus infection. But they won't find one because it isn't a sinus infection. It's a jaw infection. You can thank me later!

Ok:
I have been smoking pot for 13 years and I am 29 (embaraasing I know)
I have this issue, but there is hope!!
I love pot and dont think it is harmful if used in moderation, but if abused it is harmful face it dudes. I dont care what any poty advocate says the sh*t is bad for you. Have you ever seen how black your pipes get when you smoke. Any time you smoke pot it heats the small hairs and layers in your throat and destroys cells. Anyting that kills cells in your body increase chances of mutation when they heal; precursor to cancer (not to say you will get cnacer but it increase the chance.
Firts, if you cough black stuff you [pretty much have to quit or greatly reduce your intake, but if you are a true pot smoker like I am and really like it moderation is not an option becuase before you know it your smoking everyday again.
Do your social life, your body, your mind and your soul a favor just quit dude its not hard.
It got so bad for me my breadth started getting really stank, I started eating late night meals and not brusing my teeeth at night. I lost jobs in interviews b/c my breadth was stank (this cost me thousands of dollars and jobs I really wanted)
Ok this is an extreme case, but my bet is there is someone out there that has been through exactly what I just explained.
You have to stop smokign and then do alot of cardio to speed up the healing and cleaning process in about 2 months you should be completly clean, talking more when you go out, and not flaking on your friends every weekend to stay at home and play PS3.
Youve smoked enough for a life time, pick up base jumping, surfing or sky diving bc when you quit you will have renewed energy to focus in many other areas.
I love pot, but its done me wrong, i dont care what any other pot lover says its bad for your health dudes face it and quit defending it!!

Morning all - I thought I would throw my 2 pence worth in here as it looks like there a lot of people worried about the black 'stuff' which they are coughing up.
Just a quick background of me - I'm 30 and have been smoking cigs and pot for just over 10 years. Every year, for about a month or 2 at a time, I give up both pot and cigs due to wishing to be fitter and healthier especially due to my getting on it years these days :-) Every time I quit I start coughing up all this black 'stuff' after about a week and it always lasts until i - unfortunately - start smoking again.
Over the years I have read a lot on the internet regarding this black 'stuff' as i have had the same concerns as pretty much everyone else in this thread. What I have found is that this stuff is the tar that gets deposited in your lungs when you smoke tobacco - whether it is mixed with pot or not. The reason it starts to get expelled after a week or so is due to the tiny little hairs in your lung (called cilia) sweep all the debris (including tar) up and out of your lungs. This process does not usually happen whilst you carry on smoking (cigs or pot) due to the smoke actually killing off these tiny hairs. Once you stop smoking these hairs grow back and can resume their normal function of cleaning our your lungs. An analogy i like to use is using a broom on a floor. Using the broom normally will clear all the dirt and dust from your floor easily - but if you were to remove all the bristles and tried sweeping your floor with just the bare wood you would end up with a dirty dusty floor!
But once the hairs grow back even a little bit of smoking can kill them off again - leaving you with lungs that are unable to clear out the tar built up in them.
I know it can be scary to see this tar being coughed up - but over the years I have almost welcomed it and use it as a motivator to try not to revert back to smoking. Maybe using the tar as an indicator of how well your body is repairing itself may inspire some of you to carry on the good work and not fall off the wagon.
I can't comment on how long this process lasts for as I always seem to end up back on the cigs (go on - call me a hypcrit :-) ) - but if you imagine how much you smoke you can see that there will be a fair amount of tar to clear out - so i imagine timescales would be many months and not just weeks.
I hope this has helped explain what you are seeing when you cough up this black 'stuff' and i wish you all every success in staying as smoke free as you can.
