I have a similar issue.
In my case I guess it's a problem with my omohyoid muscle. I can see in the mirro that when I swallow it is more tense in the left side of my throat.
Dr. Burke performed surgery on me (He cutted some part of hyoid bone and carthylage) but I didn't fix it.I kwnow that omohyoid muscile syndrome exists and I'm searching someone to treat it with botulinum toxin
Sorry for my english, I'm Italian.
Bye
Luca

I have had something similar for about 2 years now. It seemed to start after I had a bad chest/throat infection, and especially after one night when I woke up with my throat in a spasm and could not breath. I thought I was going to suffocate, but controlled breathing through the nose helped. It happened once or twice again that week but only lighter, and I was able to control it. However, since that episode I have this crunching / cracking in my throat when I swallow. Whether it is related or not I just donñt know but it seems very related. These days, I find myself trying to put my head and neck in a straight position just to get a nice clean crack/crunch free swollow, which reminds me that there is still hope! I have been to 3 doctors who examine my throat and gave me the all clear. I think that some muscles are out of place. I also do heavy weights at the gym and after a heavy shoulder shrug/trapezius session it seems to be worse. Right now I have a chest and respiratory infection and it is also much worse. I am also thinking to go to see a Chiropractor as I feel that they might be able to adjust me back into place. I am convinced that this has come about by a physical change in my throat cartilage position or neighboring muscles.. If I put myself into a proper upright posture with my head back and straight ( a bit like the stereo type English Butler ) then swollow, I don´t get the click.....

And I forgot to mention. I have also had a history of Acid Reflux with about 7 years on Lanzoprazole. I discontinued their use after changing my diet. The throat clicking crunching cracking started after I had came off these tablets. Not sure if there is any relation there.
And one more thing, when I drink alcohol ( especially neat whiskey ) my throat seems to close-up and the symptoms are much more exagerated, especially the next morning.

I believe this is happening to me too.
A month or two back a bug flew directly into my nostril. I blew really hard to get it out and in the days that followed the uncomfortable feeling in my throat began. Sometimes its there, other times it is not. Sometimes it is painful and other times it just seems like there is an obstruction.
Things that seem to make it worse:
*Heartburn.
*Sleeping on my stomach with my head turned sideways.
*Driving for a long period of time or Sitting at a desk, this is strange becuase it doesn't seem to happen when I am playing a video game but when I am sitting at my desk at work. I wonder if its because I slouch differently or my monitor is lower at work.
*Gagging, sneezing or blowing my nose.
It went away for about a week and a half and then all of the sudden it was back. I was mortified. Its so nice to hear that you all are experincing something similar, although this has only been going on for me for about 3 months. I'm sorry that some of you have suffered for years with it.
It seems like the symptoms stop for a period of time if I massage my larynx in that area, or if I hear that pop/crunch sound.

Thank you Marky Mark! I have exactly the same symptoms, and it started after about 2 weeks of heavy trap work / shoulder shrugs in the gym! I also saw an ENT and have been going through all the same stuff everybody is saying, meds for GERD, etc, etc, but I really think this is a muscular thing, and the coincidence of you mentioning heavy trap / shoulder shrugs, and also what brought it on for me, is just too much of a coincidence not to have something there I'm thinking. I am going to lay off the trap exercises, try sleeping flat on my back without a pillow, try trap stretches several times per day along with strengthen the muscles in the front of the neck (head raises while flat on my back) and see if that helps.

For me it pops when I swallow my saliva. When I swallow food it doesn't pop. I recently got cat scans and the doctors say it is suggestive of a lipoma (a fatty benign growth) which I read they don't know the causes of lipomas but most think genetics or minor injury, which would go along with the muscle injury theory. I am going for an endoscopic exam on the 14th. Cures/fixes for lipomas are typically surgery, which they try to avoid doing unless necessary (the lipoma is interfering with respiration or swallowing), but I also have discovered some good information about omega 3 / omega 6 balancing, which I now think might also have contributed. I'm cutting back on omega 6 foods and starting to take fish oil supplements and going to run that idea until my endoscopy to see if it helps.
