David,
I just wanted to thank you for helping me with this. I've recently had this start happening to me <21 year old male> and your method of 'fixing' it actually worked! I don't know if you still visit this site, but I hope you know you helped someone today. Thanks again!

How hard did you depress your tongue? Did you use your fingers or a tongue depressor?

Hi Lulz,

I have exactly the same thing - the ENT did a laryngoscopy and said that my inflamed oesophagus (due to reflux) was rubbing against adjacent structures. I also grind my teeth (due to dental work). Have you had an ultrasound scan?

I had an ent tell me the same thing about the inflammation but another ent said it was not possible. Frustrating. I have tried acid reflux mess and raising my bed and I see no difference. I was on prednisone for another problem and this issue was not present. In my case it came on as I tapered off the prednisone. That would seem to support it is Inflammation.

Unlike some others mine doesn't do it as much when I swallow. Mine does it when I look left or when I just sort of flex my neck muscles. Always when my head is straight and to the left. If I look right none of this happens.

I also notice if i put slight finger pressure on either side of the neck around the SCM then it will not grind. A few docs said crunching is harmless and to ignore it. Ugh. I was on a roller coaster and it literally felt like something was going to pop out around my Adams apple. Never had that in years of riding them.

exact same thing has been happening to me since 2007. I was a singer and on 2 different occasions i have not been able to talk for 6 weeks periods. Neck strengthening excersizes help ones that fix posture. Laying on ground doing superman back clenched helped. vocal warm up sirens, Holding your tong to the roof of your mouth in an L position correct it too. Couple of thing there that help me. :)

Your jokes are not humorous. You should be ashamed of yourself that people are suffering and in pain and your response is "I'm not helping you because no one helped me"? There are people here that are going to undergo surgery, acquire medical bills that they cannot afford to pay, self medicate, and perhaps even die trying. This blog is supposed to be for people seeking help. The point of this forum is to find others with similar symptoms and hopefully explore options and diagnoses that haven't yet been considered. If I have experienced similar symptoms or illnesses as someone, I share so they won't have to suffer through all the failed attempts to prove my health. It's a shame people like you are a part of society, clearly you were not raised to be a contributing member. Your parents failed and so did you.

I had crunching and 5 different ENTs diagnosed me with hyoid bone syndrome.  Seven weeks ago I had a surgery by Dr. Smith in Salt Lake City to trim the thyroid cartiligage that was rubbing the hyoid bone.  It has completely resolved my constant crunching I had for years.  I had related tonge tightness and he said to give this 4 to 6 weeks and it has indeed been improving.  He encouraged me to also do some speech therapy if I was still tight.

Great to hear that your clicking has gone away! Did you have clicking on the front of the throat or on the side? I have clicking on the front, just left side of adams apple. I have seen three ENT doctors and they said they had never heard of such a thing! The clicking has been bothering me about a year now, and I am seriously considering getting surgery.

My clicking was to the left and just slightly above of my Adam's apple and mine activated most when my head moved back to the right, causing the left hyoid bone and superior horn of the thyroid cartilage to rub together. It was barely seen on an ct scan and all missed it but two docs after years of searching. Google the hyoid bone and see where it can hit the thyroid cartilage Cornu. In my case the cartilage had been fractured in an accident causing it to rub the hyoid bone. I think I will need to do some speech therapy in the coming weeks as my muscle memory is still causing occasional tongue tightness but it is improving gradually. I highly recommend that you email dr smith in Salt Lake City if you want the surgery. I flew across the country to see him after much research.

Thank you very much for your response! I am sure I have what you had. When I swallow, the highest portion of the thyroid cartilage rubs against the hyoid bone. Did you meet Dr. Smith for consultation before the surgery? I really would like a surgery, but cannot get rid of the false hope that it would resolve on its own (which is unlikely because I have had it for a year now...)
