I had my operation on Dember 17th, at 8am. I thought I'd share what I've gone through so far to help ppl who are going to have this operation done, as well as to get insight from those further along than I am.
First some history about myself. I am a 21 year college student, male. I am fairly active. I lift weights 3 times a week, followed by a clean healtht diet-brown rice, chicken breast, fruit, oats, ect everyday. I am 6'3 and weigh in at 215. I was diagnosed with chronic cryptic tonsilitis as a kid, got frequent ear and throat infections. My left tonsil has always remained large. About a year ago, I began having a mild sore throat, with mild tension headaches. Went to multiple docs, all dismissed it as allergies and gave me meds which did nothing so of course I stopped taking them. Over last summer, I began getting aches and pains behind my right ear, as well as a small bump pretty much right smack on my mastoid process. Went to a few docs for that, all of which said it was a muscular problem. At this point my faith in the knowledge of doctors is at an all time low and I think that most are incompitent in their field.
During the fall semester I begin to have almost daily soar throat-very mild-but still annoying. Aching behind my ear continued. Headaches seemed to subside. After summer I rarely get them anymore-kinda wierd.
fast foward to a few months ago, I went to and ENT guy. He looked in my throat, checked my ears, neck for nodes-all the mandatory stuff. Didn't find any nodes, but still diagnosed me with cryptic tonsilitis.
A month before my surgery I began to notice new bumps popping up in my neck, right below where my chin and neck meet. They are mobile, non-tender, and about the size of a pea. I have 2 or three there. Also was now experiencing the same aches (but for much shorter times) behind my left ear. This got me wondering if it was a jaw disorder that was causing the aching and pain in these spots. I do grind my teeth a lot and was given a bite splint by the dentists a few years back but have since lost it. Now- I'm not sure if these new nodes flared up simply because I was paranoid that I had HIV and would feel around my neck daily, or if they flared up because of my newly occuring DAILY soar throats. These new nodes were also on the same side as the enlarged tonsil. About the HIV-I pretty much conviced myself last year I had HIV. I attribued the headaches, the swollen node behind me ear, even feeling of nasea during last spring semester. I would also get blisters on my tounge, on the front. Now that I look back on it, I do have depression, and take lexapro for it, and the nasea could have been caused by that or anxiety, as well as the tension type headaches. I haven't been tested for HIV, and it still lingers in my mind, but I take it as a good sign that I was admitted to donate blood plasma. I do that twice a week, it's good money. But they do test your blood, and I know they do not let u donate if you have any infections.
anyways that was longer than I intended, so to the surgery!
I was woken up monday morning in a daze, and in pain. The nurses kept proding and poking me, asking me on a scale from 1-10 my pain, and pumping me full of all kinda of stuff. I stayed at the hopsital until 11am, then left with my parents to their home. I was prescribed liquid hyrdocone.
The rest of the day went fine, I could take alright, I ate a lot. Didn't sleep for sh*t tho.
2nd day-pain was managable, was now also prescribed percs to take in addition to the hydrocone. again didnt sleep for sh*t that night
3rd day-oh boy. The worst day of all so far. I woke up in the morning feeling almost zero pain at all. I must have been hit really good by the meds I took at night or something. I was so happy and thought I somehow healed up real fast. Wrong. About two hours after eating I was in bad pain again. I had told my parents that the 2 meds I had didn't help enough, so they called my ENT guy (who lives 2 houses down from me), to presribe me something else, but he refused. My mom, who works for a bone doctor, talked him into writing me a persc for extented release oxy. These also didn't seem to do sh*t. The 2 hour period while I was waiting for my dad to get back from the pharmacy and getting up (i didnt take any meds upon waking in lue of getting a new med regiment). Felt like I was being stabbed in the throat and ears. By the time he got back I could hardly swallow. I forced myself to eat an egg to have food in me so I wouldn't get sick from the meds I was about to take. By this time I was crying, and I haven't cried since I was pretty much a kid. But, crying strained my throat so I sucked it up and swallowed all my meds. These put me out really fast. I spent the rest of the day in bed, zoning in and out of conciousness. Again slept on and off that night.
day4-woke up still in pain, but less than day 3. Spent the entire day laying around, watched movies, ect.
Day 5. I woke up, took my pain meds as well as my antibiotics. Went back to sleep. When I woke up I felt strange and loopy. I also was getting cold sweats. I went to lay down as I began to feel like I was gonna hurl. My throat felt decent at this time. I felt like I had to c**p, and thought maybe this feeling was from being so backed up, so i went to the toilet. After a few 'pushes', i felt like puking was inevitable, and I threw up everywhere. This continued for a few minutes, then I felt much better not not sick anymore. Well, now my throat reaaaally hurt from throwing up. I also had nice egg chunks stuck in all sorts of pockets in my throat. I spent the rest of the day strugglin to drink, and eating nothing. again slept on and off. I went to bed at 7, woke up around 12, and from then on woke up for an hour then slept for 2.
day6-today I haven't taken any pain meds, in fear of getting sick again. I don't plan on taking anymore either-i cannot stand how they make me feel. The pain is actually not THAT bad, and I can handle it. Well, I lied about not takng meds, I just took some ibeprofen, which helped take the edge off. My saving grace is warm tea. I have been drinking it non-stop today as it very temporarily reliefs my throat. I also ate three pieces of pizza today for dinner, and am about to eat more because my hunger is massive for some reason today.
I hope the next days keep getting better and better. This has to be THE worst experience in my life. I hope in a month I will look back and feel it was worth it.
I know that most will not like this-but I am prolly going to make some cannabis tea. I would love nothing more than to smoke right now, but know it will hurt my throat. I sure could use the relaxation tho to help me sleep tonight, and it also has properties to help ease pain. I'd much rather take this than any more stinkin narcotics.
