I have to do a one-hour fast tomorrow for church. I always feel light-headed and sick when I have to prepare for this every week. Is there some way I can prepare for this without feeling nauseated and faint beforehand? I am Catholic and this is what we do before Mass and I don't want to skip doing it. I have tried to eat something with more carbs in it an hour before but by the time I get to Mass, I am starving and feel dizzy. Afterwards, I go to the bathroom and sneak in a meal bar to get rid of the hunger pangs. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Thanks!

Hello! I hope I can give you some helpful advice. You stated you had a high carb snack before leaving for mass. When you do this, the snack is used up very quickly in your body. It is broken down in your stomach efficiently and passed to your small intestine to be readily absorbed into your bloodstream. You have a boost of glucose that is essentially a rise in your blood sugar. However, it depletes quickly and then your blood glucose plummets. This causes the symptoms you have been experiencing. That being said, no more quick carbs before mass!
Here is what you SHOULD do. First of all, you should have a hearty breakfast the day of the fast. It can include whatever carbs you are allotted for this meal by your physician or dietician, such as 15-30 grams of carbohydrates. You would benefit from choosing carbs that have a high fiber content. Whole wheat toast or high-fiber cereal would be great choices to implement into your breakfast any day of the week, for that matter. You may also want to include a protein into the meal; protein and the fiber will stay in your gut longer and you will feel full for a few hours afterwards. This should get you through the morning of preparation, driving to mass, and participating before ever getting hungry.
