Dilaudid is actually very old. It was used in tonics & tinctures in the old days (1800's). I do not think it is a form of morphine but I could B totally wrong. In my opinion, it is stronger but should ONLY be used on the rare occasion when it is needed, such as a trip to the E.R. for extreme pain.

Who the hell are you? What medical degree do you possess that makes you an expert on chronic pain treatment? Are you a professional in drug rehabilitation for drug abusers? Chronic pain is a condition that many people suffer from and in some instances medications are necessary to help people when there are no other options to relieve the pain. Also, your grammar is terrible. I truly hope English is not your first language because if it is, not only are you a fool, but you are a very uneducated one at that. If you want to hop on your high horse, make sure you can make a statement that doesn't make you sound like an id**t first.

Well, Well, I have been on all kinds of pain medications for 15 years, remembering the very first time I ever took dilaudid, I didn't even know what it was, until, for the first time in 10 years I felt some relief, from a motor cycle accident that nearly tore off my right leg, and broke many bones, N ow if someone is lucky enough to go through life with out any pain, I say, good for them, but please don't judge us as drug addicts. I think pain medications are a god send, and has kept me able to take care of my children and animals, with only a minimal amount of pain. So I say, bring on the pain medication:)

To the guest convinced that everyone here is an addict:

This is the sort of misinformed, judgmental attitude which makes appropriate treatment of severe pain so difficult in this country.

DNA testing is now available to profile the genes connected with metabolizing various medications. Of the three genes associated with pain medication, I am missing one altogether and the second only functions halfway. This means, for example, that you and I could take the same medicine at the same dose and it would work half as well for me as it does for you.

Also, untreated severe chronic pain can cause all kinds of other complications, from endocrine problems (adrenal stress, cortisol imbalance, etc.) to shortened life span. Please: Investigate the subject scientifically rather than leaping to inaccurate, moralistic layman's prejudice.

Dilaudid has nothing to do with morphine. Morphine is a totally different pain killer. Dilaudid is at least 4 times weaker than hydromorphone. It is injectable the save as morphine. By far hydromorphone is a much stronger and better pain killer not even close to morphine. I am on all three 8 mg. dilaudid, 10 mg. injectable hydromorphone and 15 mgs. of morphiine. I have serious problems and take these on a daily basis.

I was on various strong pain pills for a long period of time and I also was on herion for 6 months!!! I beat it though roughly but I did and from a old users point of view they all are bad for you but morphine to me is less risky than dilaudid AKA K2,K4, and so on!!! Dilaudid is a synthetic form of herion!!! Look it up and see for yourself it's not a for of morphine!!! Before you get it perscribed do your reserch!!!!! It's not fun to become dependent on trust me!!! And it's hard to shake the addiction!!!!

You CANNOT become addicted to pain med if you are having pain. The addiction comes from administoring pain meds without having pain.

I beg to differ. I've had severe chronic pain for about two years now and I've been on Vicodin ever since. My body HAS become ADDICTED to my pain meds and I don't abuse it at all! I take them ONLY for severe pain but if I were to stop I get extremely sick and would probably end up in the hospital from withdrawals. So yeah anyone can become addicted even if you take only for severe pain!

To all of you who use this powerful pain killer.  Please try to go one day without the drugs it will change your life.  I am not saying you dont have pain but life has pain.  Remember your first broken heart or when when your pet died.  With time the pain went away.... You still look back and can feel the pain you felt that day.  Now its time to stop the addiction under the ruse of "pain" and look to your future.  Hug your child, or tell someone you love them without the slured speech and obvious behavior of a person under the infulence of a narcotic.. We can tell you are "HIGH."  If not for yourself do it for the ones you say you love.  It doesnt need a special day or time.  Just do it now with the help of your doctor end the vicious cycle of addiction.

Some people actually need narcotics just to he through the day. Yeah my body has become dependant on it, but if I didn't have my pain pills I would have no job and I wouldn't be in college. I've gone off it to try to manage the pain but mt pain becomes so bad that I can't get out of bed or function. I would have no life without my pain meds and most people who actually use them for pain don't get high from them.

There is way too much misinformation about dilaudid and morphine on this page.  First of all morphine is an opiate, meaning it is a

naturally occurring narcotic alkaloid found in the opium poppy, a naturally growing plant.  This plant contains many different

 types of opioids.

An opioid is a psycho active chemical that bind to your opioid receptors which are  found in the brain, the spinal cord , and the

gastro-intestinal tract.  In order to understand how morphine and dilaudid differ, other than just one being stronger than the

other, and one gets you higher than the oter, you need to understand the receptors involved.   Sorry for getting all sciencey on

you but misinformation is dangerous. there are four main receptors involved in the process of absorbing, binding, and

metabolizing of  opioids, they are: the  delta (δ) opioid receptor, the kappa (κ) opioid receptor, mu (μ) opioid receptor, and the Nociceptin receptor.  There are different subtypes for each receptor and different locations for each, but those are not

necessary to discuss  the difference between the two drugs being discussed here.  In medicine,  the term opiate describes any

of the narcotic opioid  alkaloids found as natural products in the opium poppy plant, Papaver Somniferum.  The major active

opiates found naturally in opium are morphine, codeine, and thebaine.  Semi-synthetic opiates such as hydrocodone, Dilaudid

(hydromporphone), oxycodone, heroin, and bupo and oxymorphone, are derived from naturally occurring alkaloids from the

poppy but with limited synthesis.  Hence - semi-synthetic...synthesized from naturally occurring alkaloids. There are also

completely(fully)  synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, methadone, and meperedine (demerol or pethidine), tramadol (ultram),

levorphanol, and dextropropoxyphene( currently disconinued in the USA).

It is also worthy to note that while heroin is considered a semi-syntethic, it is also considered as esters of morphine because

while somewhat altered (semi synthesized it is considered more natural in nature than fully semi-synthesized.
Opiates are derived directly from the opium poppy by departing and purifying the various chemicals in the poppy. Opioids include all opiates but also include chemicals that have been synthesised in some way.

So heroine is and opioid but not an opiate. Morphine is an opiate and also an opioid.

If you take heroin, and then a drug test, you will ABSOLUTELY test positive for opiates.

Tramadol, which is an opioid, will not show positive for opiates.
