You might give people with severe chronic pain a break pal. Just because a person needs pain meds for pain does not make them addicted to pain meds. Not if they are taking them for pain relief. It is the people that take pain meds for the HIGH that are addicted to them. There is a DIFFERENCE, please don't be so fast to judge. People that have chronic pain and must rely on pain meds usually hate the idea of having to take so many or any pain meds at all! That's a FACT! And the people in real pain REALLY don't like being labeled. It's bad enough that they are living with day to day pain, and cannot function like normal people. They don't like what's happened to them. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.

I know this is an old post but I am a newbie and maybe you still are wondering? Anyways, I just had major foot surgery last week Friday and up until this week Friday I have been extreme pain. Yesterday I went back to my doctor to tell her my pain meds were not working, so she asked what would help me - I don't know much about pain meds out there but I said when I awoke from surgery in pain they gave me dilaudid and it worked. She prescribed them and they do work, they are god's gift to man, with them I take Toradol, Percocet, XS Tylenol and I also vape, smoke hash and ingest marijuana butter to all having great effects for the pain.

I had my first M.I. 5 years ago and was given morphine for the pain. I developed a severe rash that resembled shingles. The doctor in the Cath Lab noticed the rapid onset of my alergic reaction and switched me over to Dilaudid. I can honestly say that the only upside of that heart attack and the 4 that have followed is that for 36 hours post M.I. I get to play with dragons and butterflys:-D

Step 1 - We are powerless over alcohol, drugs, people places and things.
So why don't you live your life as the hard working shining example you portray yourself
to be and let others live their life? Who are you to say all these posts are from people
who are addicts in denial? You discount their pain, judge them, show no compassion, and offer no solution.
I am in severe arthritic pain right now and I am at work. I would willingly risk addiction to alleviate this pain.
Today I will ask my doctor for relief. When the crippling effect of pain is brought under control I will seek
a long term solution, ie: diet change, meditation, yoga, prayer. What I wouldn't do is shame, blame or
judge those who are suffering.

I don't know your situation but I would not start with any of those. I am on Morphine now and am looking for a way to get off it. This is a horrible way to live. Withdraw is horrible. It messes with your bowels sooo much. Don't do this to yourself.

I totally agree with you. People who are taking pain meds under a Doctor's supervision should not be considered a drug addict. I am on morphine but have problems with my bowels. Our life has changed so much. There is so much I can't do anymore, camping etc. and it's not so much the pain it's the bowel problems that almost keep me home bound. I have decided to get off the medication and it will not be a picnic. I wish I would have never taken it. I hope you do well with it and do not have the side effects like I did. People with chronic pain are in a no win situation.

Most people don't realize this, but Methadone is often an excellent drug for effective pain relief. Its very long lasting, very potent and very cheap. Originally it was developed for soldiers needing pain relief from horrendous injuries on the battlefield. It is very potent so you have to really be careful adjusting the dosage. It delivers long lasting pain relief at about a fourth of the cost of morphine or dilaudid. Think about it, check it out and maybe it can help you. Its just one more option that you have. take care

This is for "Guest" on their High Horse.
What a revolting and vile human being you are. Sitting up here judging all these people. People whom you never met and then labeling each one a drug addict simply because for some, their quality of life depends on some of these types of medications just like someones quality of life would depend on their meds if they were diabetic.
You don't know these people. If you were in a wheelchair and the pain was maddening to you, what would you do? Oh! Let me guess, you're that one person, the "chosen one" who could withstand the pain, day in,day out,non-stop,round the clock, with NO expectancy for it to subside, you would "accept that" and just "be strong"? RIGHT? Uh huh. That's believable.
Addiction vs dependancy. Is there a difference? Sure there is. Addicts tend to wan't to "get high" and that's all they care about. Persons who are "dependant" on their meds, much like someone "dependant" on their blood pressure meds, need it to put one foot in front of the other where everything else failed. They take it as prescribed, dont abuse it,don't sell it,etc. The ones who do abuse it,well, they of course could be an addict.
But you Sir (or Ma'am) judged ALLLLLLLLLLLLL these people and placed one label on them like you know them. As if YOU'RE EXEMPT from ever finding yourself in this situation where you must take something you would rather not take just to keep yourself from going nuts from that brand of pain.
Would a woman be able to withstand the pains of labor each day,non-stop,for the rest of her life,no subsiding ever? Of course not! For the remainder of her life? NO! And neither would you! Whatever it may be that would cause you crippling pain that is so maddening, you would NOT be able to withstand that for 10,20,50 maybe 70 years non stop, each day. No sleep. Can't think. Some commit suicide.

I know people who dred taking their meds but have to. They dred the side effects. The side effects is what addicts tend to enjoy. How double dog dare you. How dare you say "whatever happened to earning a living, living an honest life and getting high on your accomplishments or from providing for your family"? Yea,well tell that to the Soldiers who faught for America and who are all screwed up and dealing with excruciating pain from a plethora of injurys. Tell that to the man who worked for 35 years and injured himself on the job or was hit by a drunk driver and is a parapalegic now due to it. Tell that to the man who worked for 50 years and now has some form of cancer and not only is his cancer causing him unbearable pains, but so is the treatments for it such a chemo and radiation. Tell that to the woman with Behcet’s disease or Osteonecrosis. Tell that to the man (or kid-teen) who has Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy. Tell that sh*t to the person who has Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia or the person who has so many failed surgerys they weren't put "back together" correctly and are in worse pain now than before. Tell that to the migraine sufferer who can't stand the light or the dark, any sounds or keep food down who vomits constantly on making matters worse. Tell that sh*t to the person who's Insurance wouldn't cover many needed procedures and now, after having lived this long without corrective procedures,it's too late. Tell that to the person in the wheelchair who may not have health professionals to come in and do "range of motion" with their limbs and they become SOOOOOOOOOOO STIFF they scream in agony but cannot lift or stretch it to relieve the pain. Preach that BS to the person with Dercum disease or Hidradenitis suppurativa (reoccuring) or Trigeminal neuralgia (Fothergill’s disease). Tell that BS to the person who now has Cluster headache syndrome (also known as "Suicide Headaches). Make sure you make mention of your judgements to the people who suffer from Achalasia too.
Let ALLLLLLLL these people know that YOU are strong! You're the "chosen one" and that they should be "strong too" and just "deal and accept their pain" day to day. And don't forget to include your little rant about "earning a living properly" when your speaking to one of these people who are twice maybe three times your age or even around the same age,who cares, but has been a contributing member of society when all this happened in their life.
Some of these people were born with these disorders that cause horrible unimaginable pain or started early on in life. So again,as you sit there on your throne, free from error in all your flawlessness and glory, remember one thing, this can happen to YOU too! Oh yes,I know you THINK you're exempt, but you're not! It can also happen to someone you love.
Ew you're so gross.

The first part is so stupid. It is clear he has not been in serious pain. The second part was very informing as the doctors can play God with your life.

You have no right to tell these people if they r or are not addicted to drugs. I am offended by that. I am in my early 20's and have had major open heart surgeries over 4 times in my life and have been given lots of pain meds. I am currently in the hospital for a recent leg problem and cuz of how I've been walking my back is messed up. They tried giving me perks but it didnt effect me now im on 2mg of morphine every 3 hours and I keep telling them that I don't even feel it because me body is so use to pain meds from all my surgeries.
But I am in NO way shape or from addicted to drugs! Peoples body's over time just build up a tolerance to pain meds, but that does NOT mean just cuz they need a higher dose that they r addicted to them. And this is coming from a woman that is a whole whopping 86 lbs and morphine has NO effect on me. So idk who u think u are but u need to step back and think about the fact that ur not these people's DRs and u have no clue what they r going threw.

I had that same surgery and dilaudid was wonderful!!! I used to get morphine at one hospital when I went there for diverticulitis. When I changed hospitals (because the surgeon I wanted didn't use the one I normally went to), they told me that they use dilaudid instead of morphine because it's stronger without the nasuea and instead of being loopy, I would just not care about the pain. What a godsend that was but I knew from the first dose that I had to be very careful with it because it almost felt "too good". They sent me home with pills but they don't work nearly as well as the IV push.

Dilaudid is alot better then Morphine for pain. And not even as many side affects that Morphine will give you.

Thats because you were given a shot. When Dilaudid is given in pill form, BIG DIFFERENCE

From what I am reading from your post, I would have to say you have never been in excruciating pain that never goes away. You do not know what is medical wrong with these people, so I think you have no right to judge. I have never even seen Herion before, but I am on pain meds. daily. It does not get rid of my pain, but I am able to get out of bed, wash my dishes, etc.
