I am tjree wks. post surgery. I also have high cal.10.6 and PTH is 95. My sug. was done in Tampa. Politz was a doll and the other one , not. I had questions about the whole thing . As my scan showed ademoma high right ( I could not see what he was pointing to ) and his notes to my pcp stated they took out the lower right parathyroid.
I was also concerned that the surg. took an hr. longer then they said it would and not mention of anything out of the ordinary happened but I woke up with a bruised lip that lasted for a week.
My pcp is concerned is faxing labs and a letter.
They removed one adenoma and biopsied three others , did you know that some people have six parathyoids and sometimes they are located IN the thyroid. I don't know what to do next .... I don't know if I trust these guys anymore ???

Hi Guest: Are you taking calcium supplements as directed by our doctor in Tampa? Did you get pic of tumor? Glad your pcp is following up. My surgery took longer also, I never ask why. No bruised lip though. I certainly didn't know about the six parathyroid thing. You are just three weeks post-op don't give up things WILL get better. I still trust Doctors in Tampa and I believe they are the best. I email Kelly when I have a question and she always responds promptly. I am 10 wks post op and think I am finally turning the corner on recovery. I had hyperplasia. Please keep us posted on your recovery. TXG

And I'm considerably less trusting the more I hear, and given my own lack of cure, as well as the fabrications in the surgical report about the lengthy conversations (which never took place) about how my health likely wouldn't improve much even with successful surgery. There were only two short conversations and he said totally the opposite.
It sounds like yours might have had some incongruities as well?
I wouldn't worry too much about the bruised lip unless it's stilll bruised - they do have to do laryngeal mask airway anaesthesia, and it's possible something just got banged a bit in the process.
But if you're not taking calcium supplements, then I would be mildly concerned (not yet alarmed) about the calcium level.
I am so sorry you went through this, but it is early days. I'm not trying to sugar-coat, but it could take five or six weeks for your calcium to come down. And I really, really hope it does.
Have you checked out hyperpt at yahoo groups? It may be worth your while.

Guest: Hi, I am certainly not trying to sugar coat the recovery process after a parathyroidectomy. It is DIFFERENT for all of us. Please give yourself time and you have your pcp on board, that is more than some us have. As I have stated in previous posts here and elsewhere if I had to have surgery again I would go back to Tampa in a heartbeat. I do think Dr N is somewhat arrogant, but I am the type of person that doesn't need or want my hand held or a good pat on the back. Kind words yes, and I received that. I am sorry if others didn't get that. I wish you a speedy recovery. Stay positive. Keep in touch...TXG

I also had a bruised lip after surgery. The recovery room nurse told me that this often happens to patients with an intubation tube. When the tube is being removed, she said, patients have a tendency to bite down, and they often bite their lip!

I just had parathyroid surgery 2 days ago and though I can't say that I feel a dramatic sudden difference, I feel great. I am sorry for all those who I have read about that still feel badly. I hope you all feel better soon. My PTH was 40 and serum calcium was steadily increasing, at 11.1. I too debated the fact of traveling to Tampa over staying in my home town & going with the best here. I was quite pleased so far with my Cincinnati Dr. Once I awoke from surgery, I felt fine. The next day I went shopping for 4 hours, and today I went to several garage sales. I almost forget that I had surgery. I'm currently not taking any calcium extras, except what I was originally taking at 1200 mg Caltrate. I certainly hope everyone gets permanently better soon. PleasedOH

PleasedOH: So glad you are doing well. Did you have the MIRP procedure? I am three months post surgery this week and I am so much better. I will have labs done this week and I hope to get good results. The reason I went to Tampa was I never could get answers here. So happy you could find a doctor at home.

Texgranny, I had a minimally invasive surgery, but not radio guided. I am not yet a week post-surgery, so I do not know how long my surgery took or whether they checked the other 3 parathyroids, but I still feel great! I have no limits and there really was not any real "recovery". Cleaned out my garage 2 days later, then went back to work on the Monday after Thursday surgery. This was the easiest "surgery" ever so far. I'm glad you're doing well also and I hope your next "numbers" check goes well!

i had hyperplasia and had three parathroids removed. during the ex-am before surgery my surgegon found throid cancer also. so i had a total thyroidextomy all at once. the surgegy was a breeze and i felt fine, but now 8 months later i can hardly function.

Sibbielu: Wow! lots of surgery. Did your surgeon tell you that you had one or one-half gland left? It has not been made clear to me yet. Are you on thyroid med? I have a family member that lost thyroid to cancer and has done well with meds. I am so sorry to hear you are not doing well. My calcium is still high and I am really not pleased with that as it leaves me to be tired most of the time. I have been told due to my hyperplasia I will just have to live with it. What are your calcium levels? Please don't give up hope and look for a Dr that will listen to you. Good luck...Best Regards...Txg

Calcium is still high by my reckoning - 10.3, PTH has gone up to 77. Kelly told me those numbers are well within normal range and I am completely cured; ergo none of my symptoms were from the tumour - it must have been another disease causing the problems all along.
I don't believe a word of it.
I'm still really sick.
I don't take any calcium supplements - had to quit shortly after the surgery because they were making me sicker and pushing my calcium even higher.
I'm sorry that you're not 100%, but I am glad that you've had some improvements, and sincerely hope they continue.
