HI adamsmom,

I'm 43 and had my parathyoidectomy in Tampa on 10/30 and overall it's a very good outcome. The bone/muscle aches I'd been having have pretty much subsided almost immediately. The only side-effect I've had is some transient dizziness, which I also had before the surgery. I think there's an adjustment after surgery as your body adapts, that they don't bother to tell you about. Your numbers certainly indicate hyperparathyroidism. I think the odds are that a surgery would help with tiredness and irritability. It's helped my tiredness. But it's definitely scary I know.

Yeah....get excited........it will help. I'm 41 and had two parathyroid tumers taken out by Dr. Norman 1 year ago. There are rough patches here and there - I'll feel week and tired at times but average about 80% as opposed to 40% before surgery. By serum calcium was always at the top end of normal. It was my ionized calcium that was causing the problem. It'ss supposed to be b/w 1.17 - 1.32. Mine was 1.42.......that was 2 tumors! This week my blood work showed it to be 1.34. Coming down ever so slowly. High clacium pushes down your phosphates too which was another problem I had. They're coming up slowly but surely. Trying a phospahte supplement ( prescription) in hopes that it puches my ionized even lower. Let us know how it goes.

I was wondering if anyone has had this problem since their parathyroid surgery. All of my labs are in the normal range. I have a pth of 24 now and before surgery it was 102. It dropped to 8 right after surgery though. My calcium was in the 11's and now is back down to low 9's. I'm on Citracal + d two times a day. I have days that my legs don't cramp or tingle but I have days that are really bad and have cramps in my feet also. I also have twitching in my arms and legs. If anyone has had this experience I would appreciate your comments.

I have my 5-week post-op blood draw tomorrow.
The dizziness has thankfully subsided.
I'm guessing my calcium and PTH will be normal now,
will let you know after I get results later this month.

While I did go to dinner the night after surgery
I wouldn't say it was all hunky-dory... I had an
ice-pack over my neck on and off that day and evening.

And while I felt quite dizzy the days after surgery,
I do have to say the bone/muscle pain was about
75% gone almost immediately.

Hello all,

I am 10 days post op and am definitely less tired then before. I had strange sensation in my calves for the forst 3 days but my concern now is the sensation of a lump or adhesion in my throat where the gland was removed. Is htis normal after this amount of time the first threedays after surgery my throa hurt from the tube and incision it was excruciating. Now it is not pain but discomfort.

Chris, glad to see you are better. Recovery is different for everyone. It really took me 6-7 mos before I got normal labs. Surgery wasn't all hunky-dory as you said, but I am very glad I went to Tampa and had it done. Good luck on your recovery...TXG

Hi Texgranny and others,

I haven't posted in a long time as I kept waiting for something definite. I think I have it now. I will be having surgery in January. I am going to Dr. Larian in Los Angeles. I looked at his website one day and emailed a question. I was really surprised when he called me, answered my questions and offered to look at my negative scan.

I've talked with him 5-6 times now (no charge for all this) and he has talked with my endo who had refused to consider surgery, and now she's on board.

He'll do MIRP as he isn't sure what he'll find. Even the superimposed scans show only possibilities. He was very honest with me and said that in this situation, about half of the people who have surgery feel better afterward, and half don't. A 50/50 chance sounds good to me.

Barring something unforeseen, it will be the same kind of outpatient surgery but he would like me to stay around for a few days so he can check things before I go home. He'll have my endo do a pre-op workup. I'm very impressed with all this and feel very confident with him.

Glad that you are feeling better.

mass: Good to hear that things are working out for you. As you know this is a long journey for alot of us. I think 50/50 sounds good too. Best wishes for a safe and successful surgery in Jan. Please keep us updated on your recovery. I am happy to say I have normal labs for the first time in six years. Best of luck...txg

Have you increased your calcium intake and if so how are you doing? Please remember when having future labs do not take calcium supplements within 4 hrs of lab work. I didn't know this until I was getting some bad labs after surgery. If you are still having cramps check with Dr about potassium supplements. Good luck with recovery. Stay positive and remember recovery time is different for each of us. Keep us posted..txg

Hello all
I'm curious about what all you post operative people are currently doing....as far as resuming daily life. Are you feeling well enough to take on all duties..........like working full time?
I've gone back to work full time - I'm a teacher, and keep thinking a full recovery is coming. Although it hasn't yet. I still have a hard time with becoming fatigued a lot easier than I would like. By the time I get home from work, I'm done! I also wake up a lot throughout the night. I would love to go to bed and sleep through the night. I'm now 13 months post op.

Hello Kodger99: Well, I am about 81/2 months post op. It has been a long journey to recovery. This time last year I could hardly walk because of bone pain. I remember Christmas last year I was so sick. I am telling you this only because I do feel better now. I am 63 y/o retired and guess my enery level is good for my age. I do have hypothyroidism now which was a shock and I hate being on meds for that. I am not sure if I could work full time now, but I am able to do more than before surgery.

Are you taking vitamins and calcium? That has been a big plus for me.
When was the last time you had lab work done? I would certainly check with Dr to make sure nothing else is going on. Good luck. txg

Hi Texgranny:
Labs in October show PTH 44 (never lower than 40) ionized calcium still a little high - 1.17 to 1.32 is normal and mine is 1.34. Phosphates are still in low range. Dr. Norman said they would come up after surgery but haven't. I'm going to email him to see if he replies. Thanks for getting back to me.

Kodger99: I always email Kelly and get good response. My PTH at it's highest was 44. I had hyperplasia parathyroid and my labs in Oct were PTH 15 and calcium 9.7. I get new labs this week and a bone density scan. Was your thyroid ok? He did remove nodule from my thyroid. Now I am hypothyroid, not sure if there is any relation to having that done. Take care...txg

Great advice Texgranny.........I emailed Kelly and told her what is going on and she said to fax them my labs and Dr. Norman will have a look at them. Now that I have them in my hands I can see that my ionized was in the middle of the normal range last December, 2 months post op. Now, 13 months later it is elevated again!

I had surgery down in Tampa almost 5 weeks ago and so far have been feeling great. I had my labs re-run and know that my calcium has dropped from 11.7 down to 9.0, still waiting for the PTH results, hopefully they've lowered as well. I see my endocrinologist tomorrow for my post-op visit.

For all of you considering surgery down in tampa, I thought Dr. Norman was phenomenal. He definitely thinks highly of himself and I would not call him a hand holder, but he is the best and made me feel cared for and completely at ease. I think he is the first doctor in 5 years who finally made me feel like I was in good hands. And his follow-up has been great, I have emailed him 2x already with post-op questions and he has responded quickly and succinctly. I am sorry for anyone else who has had a bad experience but I just wanted others to hear another side of the story.
