I'm 43 and had my parathyoidectomy in Tampa on 10/30 and overall it's a very good outcome. The bone/muscle aches I'd been having have pretty much subsided almost immediately. The only side-effect I've had is some transient dizziness, which I also had before the surgery. I think there's an adjustment after surgery as your body adapts, that they don't bother to tell you about. Your numbers certainly indicate hyperparathyroidism. I think the odds are that a surgery would help with tiredness and irritability. It's helped my tiredness. But it's definitely scary I know.

The dizziness has thankfully subsided.
I'm guessing my calcium and PTH will be normal now,
will let you know after I get results later this month.
While I did go to dinner the night after surgery
I wouldn't say it was all hunky-dory... I had an
ice-pack over my neck on and off that day and evening.
And while I felt quite dizzy the days after surgery,
I do have to say the bone/muscle pain was about
75% gone almost immediately.

I am 10 days post op and am definitely less tired then before. I had strange sensation in my calves for the forst 3 days but my concern now is the sensation of a lump or adhesion in my throat where the gland was removed. Is htis normal after this amount of time the first threedays after surgery my throa hurt from the tube and incision it was excruciating. Now it is not pain but discomfort.

Chris, glad to see you are better. Recovery is different for everyone. It really took me 6-7 mos before I got normal labs. Surgery wasn't all hunky-dory as you said, but I am very glad I went to Tampa and had it done. Good luck on your recovery...TXG

I haven't posted in a long time as I kept waiting for something definite. I think I have it now. I will be having surgery in January. I am going to Dr. Larian in Los Angeles. I looked at his website one day and emailed a question. I was really surprised when he called me, answered my questions and offered to look at my negative scan.
I've talked with him 5-6 times now (no charge for all this) and he has talked with my endo who had refused to consider surgery, and now she's on board.
He'll do MIRP as he isn't sure what he'll find. Even the superimposed scans show only possibilities. He was very honest with me and said that in this situation, about half of the people who have surgery feel better afterward, and half don't. A 50/50 chance sounds good to me.
Barring something unforeseen, it will be the same kind of outpatient surgery but he would like me to stay around for a few days so he can check things before I go home. He'll have my endo do a pre-op workup. I'm very impressed with all this and feel very confident with him.
Glad that you are feeling better.

I'm curious about what all you post operative people are currently doing....as far as resuming daily life. Are you feeling well enough to take on all duties..........like working full time?
I've gone back to work full time - I'm a teacher, and keep thinking a full recovery is coming. Although it hasn't yet. I still have a hard time with becoming fatigued a lot easier than I would like. By the time I get home from work, I'm done! I also wake up a lot throughout the night. I would love to go to bed and sleep through the night. I'm now 13 months post op.

Are you taking vitamins and calcium? That has been a big plus for me.
When was the last time you had lab work done? I would certainly check with Dr to make sure nothing else is going on. Good luck. txg

Labs in October show PTH 44 (never lower than 40) ionized calcium still a little high - 1.17 to 1.32 is normal and mine is 1.34. Phosphates are still in low range. Dr. Norman said they would come up after surgery but haven't. I'm going to email him to see if he replies. Thanks for getting back to me.

For all of you considering surgery down in tampa, I thought Dr. Norman was phenomenal. He definitely thinks highly of himself and I would not call him a hand holder, but he is the best and made me feel cared for and completely at ease. I think he is the first doctor in 5 years who finally made me feel like I was in good hands. And his follow-up has been great, I have emailed him 2x already with post-op questions and he has responded quickly and succinctly. I am sorry for anyone else who has had a bad experience but I just wanted others to hear another side of the story.
