Lucys: So happy to know you are doing so well. Glad that calcium is down too. I agree that Tampa is the place to go. I would go there again in heartbeat. I just wanted a good Dr that could and did look at the whole picture as my case was somewhat difficult. Best decision I ever made. Have a great recovery and stay in touch. txg

hi all. I had a parathyroid tumor removed on 11-26-08. I was doing really well the first week but now i know something is not right. I've gained 11 lbs in 7 days and i'm exhausted all the time. Has anyone else had a problem with weight gain after their surgery? thanks

Adamsmom729: Have you seen your PCP, if not you should. I have gained weight, but not from surgery. See your Dr and get labs done. Are you taking any supplements or any new meds? Please check with your DR. Keep us informed. txg

hi, i'm going back to the surgeon on thursday for a post op visit so i think i'll talk to him then. i'm only taking the calcium supplements that the dr told me to take. I've lost 150 lbs over the past 2 years but it was so hard so i definitly don't want to go backwards.

adamsmom729: Good for you on that weight loss! That is remarkable and I can certainly understand your concerns. I have gained weight since surgery as I am now hypothyroid. Crazy I know. I don't really like the meds for it, but I will take them until I get new labs. Did you have a MIP or traditional surgery? Good luck on your recovery...txg

adamsmom729,
Please let us know what he tells u on Thursday......I'm very curious. I still get a lot of exhaustion too. What is your PTH levels? Mine have stiill been caught up to 52....I only have 2 left! How come they're never caught at 10 or 15? Dr. Norman says they are like "a thermostat".......they're supposed to "click off" when your calcium is in the normal range? Has yours been like in the teens or twenties??
My latest labs show my Vit D is insufficient too.....how about you.
Texgranny: What's your Vit D levels at? What does this mean to you...defficient vit D that is?

Hi. My PTH was 284 before surgery and 25 afterward. My calcium was 10.9 before but i'm not sure what it is now. I had a lot of the tingleing i've read about for the first couple of days but that has since subsided. I just seem to be retaining every single ounce of water that i ingest, which would problaby have something to do with the weight gain. Normally i'd just take a duiretic or something but i don't want to take anything without talking to the dr first. i'll definitly let you know what i find out...i'm pretty curious myself :-)

Hi everyone: Not sure if you have read all my posts on the other blog or not. I don't want to bore everyone with my case...lol.. Briefly, I never had high PTH levels, only high calcium for at least 6 years. In that time I was treated for low Vit D and it only made me sicker. My surgery was March of 2008. My calcium was high then and my PTH was around 17. The 6 wks labs had me very concerned. My calcium was 10.2 and PTH 9 and Vit D low 15.5. I contacted my surgeon and was told no reason to be concerned. Not to take Vit D. I did as I was told. As I had Hyperplasia Parathyroid and 3 1/2 tumors were removed I knew it may take longer for me to recover. I finally got good labs in October. Calcium 9.7 and PTH 15. Only set back was Thyroid. I am now hypothyroid as I have stated before. It is very important not to take calcium within 4 hours of lab work. I found this out the hard way. Your energy level will return. This disease is so different for all of us. Please stay positive and give yourself time. I know you will be better. txg

Hi Adamsmom,
How receiving was your surgeon this past apt? Did he have any explanation for your continued exhaustion?

Hi Kodger: I was hoping to hear from Adamsmom also.
My brother's Dr is checking his PTH levels this week. His new heart Dr found where he has had high calcium for years. DUH! He has had kidney stones three times and also suffers from many symptoms I had. Have you heard of this disease affecting more than one in a family? Not sure what to make of all this. txg

Hi Texgranny,
Has your brother exhibited symptoms of hypercalcemia?
No one else in my family, that I know of.
I keep reading about my ionized calcium being up again in the presence of in "inappropriately high normal " PTH and just don't know what to think. Haven't heard a thing from Kelly or Dr. Norman. I'm worried that I won't hear a thing. I'm just on a progressive decline, feeling exhausted and weak pretty much daily again. When I do feel better and "get to it" with everything that needs to be done around here, the end result is becoming fatigued way easier than I should.
Researching how to suppress Ionized calcium- hopefully there's a prescription i could get as a patch. I read about high doses of Vit D to supress PTH. I need to have as many options on my plate as possible before I get in to see an endochronologist here I guess. Maybe ask about being tested for MEN1 as well.

Hi Kodger, Yes my brother has symptoms of hypercalcemia and has had them for years. After my surgery and all my research on hyperparathyroidism I encouraged him to get a PTH test. He is an attorney and just didn't have time. Bless his heart he is so sick now I have finally won on getting the test done. I never had a high PTH. So we will see.
I am very concerned about your labs. Did you have two tumors removed?
I hope you can find a good endo, as mine here was terrible. Do you still take calcium and a multi-vitamin daily? That is a must.
I would not give up on contacting Kelly. How many months since your surgery? I so hope you get answers soon as I know how depressing it can be when you are so exhausted. Especially this time of year. Stay in touch...txg

Yeah I did have 2 tumors removed 14 months ago. I am taking 1 Citracal daily. Was taking 2 but after seeing the elevation in my ionized calcium don't know how much to take. I was taking a multi-vitamin too but wasn't feeling good at all so I stopped. Will post what I hear from Kelly.

Hi All!!
I met with the surgeon and he has no clue why i would be gaining any weight...great right. he told me to keep taking the 1000mg of calcium a day but they have been making me so sick to my stomach i stopped taking them so i'm trying to drink more milk and eating more calcium rich foods which will probably only cause more weight gain. He did give me permission to go back to the gym so i'm hoping that will help.
He told me that the average size of a normal active parathyroid gland is 50grams and mine was 780 so he said that it was a very large tumor, he didn't give me the dimensions though, i was kind of bummed about that, i was actually hoping to get a picture :-)
I have been feeling a bit better but i'm still irrated with the weight gain but luckly i haven't gain anymore in a few days, even though i haven't lost any i'm just thankful not to have gained more.

Have you tried taking chewable or liquid calcium? The pills are like rocks in my stomach but the chewable kind works okay.
