That is, if your cycle is normally 28 days, and you calculate your ovulation to be, say, day 14... but this month your hormones are fluctuating and the egg is not released as soon... instead of being fertile, say day 14-17... you might be fertile days 17-21 instead. You can see how this might make the rhymthm method totally un-reliable. That's why we don't recommend anyone rely on it alone for birth control.
Of course, if the delay in your cycle comes AFTER ovulation, you might be fertile 14-17 like normal, and just have a long wait for the mense to begin.
