I have been struggling with this for the past 12 years. It doesn’t happen every time I drink. It is definitely a vitamin C deficiency. I have to drink OJ or eat an orange before I have alcohol. It’s so strange but glad I know the solution now. If I forget and get the pain, I get immediate relief from OJ or oranges .

I notice the symptoms mostly upon consuming foods ( typically wings, French fries, etc.) AND then consuming alcoholic beverages after. It gets pretty painful to the point where I am at a Social event, and I have to essentially stop engaging in conversation. When I explain to people what I’m experiencing, they’re perplexed and carry on with the evening. It is a nuicense when it happens time and time again. I have a whole regiment I follow to avoid the symptoms by eating a bit before I start drinking. I’ve noticed that I’m asymptomatic when I either ONLY drink, or if I ONLY eat. Somehow if I combine the two, that’s where I’m out of commission. I guess I’ll carry vitamin C packets with me and give it a go for next time. There have been times when I combine the two, and I don’t feel anything. Would love to know what triggers it. The oil? Breading ? Who knows.

I have the same issue and the pain has gotten worse over the years. The vitamin C has certainly helped a lot! I take 1000 mg before consuming alcohol and the morning after. But it seems that after almost a year, it is not helping as much as it use to. I barely drink anymore- because it is just not worth the agonizing pain. I am desperate to find an answer - I had tubes several times when I was little and ruptured both my ear drums after a snowboarding trip about 15 years ago, so I know I have sensitive ears. I used ear candles for years and they helped tremendously- it stopped me from being constantly sick! But now it seems they don’t work like they use to either.

My pain starts in my throat and continues down to my chest and leg whenever I have a sip of an alcoholic beverage. Anyone else have this problem?

I was only born with 2 wisdom teeth and never had them removed. I'm 46 years old and this horrible pain started about 13 years ago out of the blue. Any and every type of alcohol causes the pain in my salivary glands under my ears about an inch down. Excruciating. I can't drink at all anymore.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I get bad earache/headaches after drinking ANY type of alcohol, and I think it also happens with other foods (cheese, maybe caffeine, maybe even bread?). It's incredibly debilitating because the headache/pain can last multiple days and it makes it really difficult to get up in the morning because my head feels so heavy and makes me groggy.

I've gone to multiple doctors about this, and no one has a straight answer. One said that it may be myofascial pain in my jaw and that I should wear a Night Guard at night and do jaw exercises. One said I shouldn't eat/drink anything inflammatory, but I'm too much of a foodie for that.

I still haven't figured out the solution... if anyone can figure it out, please let me know!

I’vebeen told it’s an alergic reaction as well. A doctor told me to bite into a lemon. It actually works almost instantly.

You all and I am suffering from a modified version of Yeast allergy, anything with too much yeast will trigger it. It's the inflammation of the parotid gland. The vit C only over stimilates the gland so that you feel the pain once n for all before it stops.

Try this: Bake some thing in your oven with a lot of brewers yeast and youll have the same symptoms!

Treatment: This only gets worse with every exposure, a Desensitisation Treatment MAY work.

I know this is sad but it's still better than something like water allergy, take care.

For real, I’ve had his for a few years now and after heavily drinking at a wedding and having the “ear infection” symptoms, I Googled it and found this. This is about 12 hours after the pain started. So, my ear is already swollen and causing pressure. But, I bit into a lemon and this actually helped almost instantly. My jaw pain subsided and actually feels somewhat better. I’m still in pain from the swelling and fairly certain that doing this earlier would’ve taken care of the issue completely. Wow! Thanks Google and thank you all. Gonna keep an orange on hand from now on, better than a lemon!

I have had this since college and I am almost 50 years old. I have researched it on and off for years and never found a definite answer. It never happens when I am just drinking, but sometimes when I mix alcohol and food it triggers it. Not all the time, but that is the only time it happens. The pain is pretty severe and will almost bring tears to your eyes at times. I can fight it off for 30 minutes or so and it will go away. Well, It happened again tonight with less than 1/2 a beer with food so I decided to research it again and found this site. The pain was pretty bad, when I read the vitamin C thing. I don't have any energy-C or other vitamin c drink mixes, but I did have a bottle of vitamin c tablets. They aren't even chewable but I popped one in my mouth anyway and the pain literally stopped within 5 seconds! Not the best taste, but well worth it! The pain is gone, amazing. Something else I read here caught my attention too; dehydration. I am sure I am chronically dehydrated. I hate water and I have to force myself to drink fluids. I just rarely get thirsty and I know I am mildly dehydrated most of the time. Maybe that has something to do with it? Who knows, but that vitamin C trick works. Thank goodness!

That is me to a T. My body doesn't like me drinking any alcohol. I read a book ages ago by Dr. William Crook about too much candida in the body and its cure. I seem to have an allergy to molds and sulfites. My pain and vertigo will last for several days especially if I have had Red wine, and type of beer, aged cheese, mushrooms, bread and sugars such as grapes. It seems to be that the sugars feed the candida to a point that my body can't deal with the large amount of mucus that it has sent to work with the offending food/drink agents. Thus, I get pain in my ears and sinuses. It lasts for several days until the body can eliminate the toxins. Vitamin C works as a natural antibiotic. I take 1000 mg per hour to bowel tolerance. (See ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** posting of web addresses is not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use). This helps a great deal if I couple that will water fasting. (I am doing this right now because I indulged during the football playoffs.) Ohhhh the regret.
