I get this too I was thinking I was the only person experiencing it. It's like a ache kinda pain by my left ear and around it sometimes in my neck too...makes me feel quite miserable and I worry constantly when I have it then it goes away next day or 2. I find I get it if I drink coffee to there must be a reason for it?

I have the same thing happen to me but not all the time but never when I was younger.  Just happened to me today when I drank beer.   How many of you grind your teeth at night?  I almost feel like this is the culprit and somehow the alcohol is leaking into my ear, lol.  I get a pain behind my ear and it swells a bit and if I tug on my ears downwards it cracks and releases some of the presure.

I have noticed for a couple of year's after drinking any alcohol or liquor, the next day I wake up with fluttering in my ear , then it turns into excruciating pain followed by vomiting. If I take a couple of pain relievers when I wake up and put Vicks on some cotton put it in my ear and apply a hot towel over it, the pain goes away instantly.

I've had the same issue for almost 5 years now. It doesn't happen every time I drink, however I feel like it is happening more frequently as I get older. The cause varies, sometimes it's wine, beer, liquor mixed drinks, and even salad dressing did it really bad once. I have been doing the Vitamin C trick for years now, and while it's not an ideal solution it allows me to enjoy my drink with my dinner. For me it happen 1 drink in, sometimes after just one sip! Its been so bad before I've cried. I either eat some lime or lemon slices at the bar or I drink some OJ at home. Pains subsides immediately, strangest thing ever. I've told friends about the condition before and they all think it is the strangest thing. I read somewhere before that it has something to do with TMJ. I've had ear problems my whole life so I guess I am used to dealing with them at this point. I also get really bad ear pain when I fly.

Alcohol can cause allergies and intolerances. Whiskey for instance is a histamine, this affects the sinus which is connected to the ears. I have the same problems. ..lol...took me forever to Google. ..didnt realise there were others...go Google alcohol and allergies. ..very interesting.

Great, finally someone has a suggestion! I have had this for ever and no one could tell me why. I just found out my 30 year old daughter has the same issue and she didn't know that I too have the issue of pain under the ears when drinking, usually it is wine or beer that sets it off.

I get this pain behind my left ear and also stiffness in my neck, after drinking beer or wine on an EMPTY stomach. I need to drink only one beer and 8 to 12 hours later I get this pain. I have no problems when I drink after eating, whether it is beer, wine or even martinis.

My sister has told me that she gets this from sulfites in cheap or non organic wines. That may be the impurities your doc was referring to.

I also get shooting pains when i drink margaritas (so i dont drink them) or sometimes with seemingly random drinks/wines. Many years ago, someone told me that the oain was from the salivary glands, which made sense at the time guven the sourness of something like margaritas...but now, i dont think that notion stands up to logic. I love sour things, citrus, vinegar, pickles, and consume all of the above regularly. I never seem to have a problem unless it's some cheap chemix mix (like say sweet and sour cocktail mix, or cheap wine) or unless i am ill. If i drink, super sour but homemade lemonade for exampe, or vinegar straight out of the bottle, i dont have this problem. So maybe the "impurities" theory is solid.

Granted it could be different causes for different people, since we all have different chemistries and medical histories.

I too have this problem with pain under the ears. To be precise it is where the end of the jaw bones meet the ear canal. It does not happen all the time. But when it does, it is always when I am having a meal with alcohol. It never happens when I am just drinking alcohol without food.
