I get this as well, but slightly different than other people are mentioning. I nearly only get it with wine and not on every instance that I drink it, but most. It nearly always happens on my first sip of red wine (that is the wine I drink the most), and gets worse with subsequent sips until eventually it stops and doesn't come back.

I would love to know what it is, it is not a horrible problem, just something I am curious about. The pain seems to follow a branch network, almost like what I would imagine the nerve system to look like. Don't know if that is what it feels like for everyone else? In addition, I eat a lot of fruit and veg and drink lots of 100% fruit juices, so definitely don't have a deficiency of vitamin C.

Thanks

My symptoms seem to be the same as yours, I only get it when drinking wine or lager (don't seem to get it when drinking bitter/ale). I experience a sharp shooting pain just below both ears at the moment I swallow then it instantly disappears, normally starts towards the end of the first glass and is gone by the end of the second glass. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all.

I have experienced the same reaction when I drink certain beers(Dutch, I think) and certain red wines. I believe the pain is in my eustachian tubes ... or it could be a result of marriage! XD

That's totally weird. I get it too. Not all the time. Hadn't happened in a long time until it happened again today after drinking a glass of wine. After reading the posts on here, I tried drinking a glass of orange juice, and sure enough: instant relief.

So I am at the bar right now watching the game and I got that stabing pain in my ears and jaw....for so long I had no clue what it was and always thought it was TMJ in my jaw. I read this post and decided to try the vitamine c, it made sense. I ordered a glass of orange juice, the first sip made the pain shoot in. My ears. Then the second sip it got better, half way through my drink the pain was gone and I was able to drink a beer...thanks so much for solving this problem

I've been asking my doctor about this temporary pain I get behind both of my ears when I drink alcohol. I find that it happens mostly when I am drinking sweet and sour mixed drinks, but I'm not sure if that is the culprit. I've been trying to get answers about it, because when it happens it is quite painful behind my ears for a few hours. Then it goes away.

The other day I sipped on a carbonated beverage during the behind the ear pain episode, and I noticed the symptoms instantly got severe, I had to spit out the soda and put it down until the ear pain went away.

So far no doctor has been able to tell me what is going on.

One Health educator mentioned it could be an allergic reaction and my tissues behind my ears are swelling. I've been online trying to find more answers, hopefully we'll get some.

Have you learned anything new?

I get the exact same thing sometimes when I drink alcohol. A friend of mine who is not even a doctor told me that it is from a lack of Vitamin C and he told me to drink either orange, pineapple or grapefruit juice and the pain will go away. Sure enough he was right. The pain goes away instantly when I eat or drink something that has a lot of Vitamin C in it. The relief is instant. The pain behind my ears go away immediately.

i am 26 years old, and drinking alcoholics about 9 years now, always suffered pain in my bones after drinking especially forearm and leg bones and also headache. then someone told me it's because of the lack of water, from then i drink enough water after drinking alcoholics, and i have no problems with bone ache now.
i have used many different kinds of drinks, vodka, whiskey, wine, beer, even pure ethanol! and never experienced ache in my ears and jaw, but now i get that bad pain after drinking a beer that i made myself, not all of my products, but some of them, i guess it has something to do with overload of saccharomyces cerevisiae, or maybe something that i eat with my drink (ate pizza with my beer tonight and got that pain)
anyway after searching google i got to this thread and some other, where they suggested vitamin c, i made a cup of vitamin c drink and while i got a really bad pain in my jaws for opening my mouth to drink, the pain was really gone while finishing the drink!
still i don't know it was for vitamin c or water, i will try water next time to know that :p

Only asked my dentist about this the other day as mentioned it in company recently as something that happens to me and for the first time someone else said they get it too. Dentist was perplexed an d said he had never heard of it but would google so thought I would and I am apparently not alone. have read other posts and do wonder if is something to do with narrow ear canals as I suffer badly when flying, does anyone else ?

As everyone else has said, great info.

Mine is mainly with beer. I agree with the saliva duct theory as well. It gets worse when you clench your jaw. I take so much vitamin C, it can't be the lack of vitamin, but I'm assuming it relaxes the gland/muscles somehow when drinking the OJ.

I've asked a lot of people about this. Those with the pain all had something in common - we all had our wisdom teeth removed and noticed it started after that.

Anyone else have their wisdom teeth pulled by chance??

thanks,
Topher

I get this only occasionally, but always when drinking Lager beer. Not had it for over a year now. Also, I have never had my wisdom teeth pulled and definitely no lack of Vitamins.

Drinking water immediately helps, seems to clear whatever is causing the problem.

Had this pain for damn long time maybe 1-2 years and very strong was getting better if I drank an alcohol but after this hangover was killing me.  Than started to use some vitamins  : Vitamin C and B vitamin complex has some effect. Than started to use some herbs to clean body, helped a little bit. Until find out what cleans body best - STARVING!!!!  Got  book from the internet - Miracle of Fasting by Paul Bragg. Started fasting - only water no food and after 3 days was feeling much better , than did a 5 day fasting and pain was gone- completely clear head !  But than  had a drinking marathon again and pain  came back....  I know if I will do a fasting it will get away, but want to find basic problem, whats wrong with my body...

Hey! I got this a few times, usually with Baileys oddly enough!

But more of then then not I don't get it at all, this time I got with beer and looked it up as it seemed odd to feel any effects like this after a 1/4 of a can of beer... before I assumed it was something to do with excessive alcohol consumption. Now I have plenty of juice and have Berrocca on a daily basics so didn't think the vitamin c thing would work as I get well other the RDA each day, just had some vitamin C and the pain went.... how gay! Thanks for the advice

I get pretty bad pain by my ear mostly when I drink red wine, but not so much with white and not at all with beer. I do have small ear canals... ear pressure is difficult when I fly.  Maybe these are related.  What's weird is that problem only developed in the last year or so. I'm 30 now so I've been drinking for 10 years... I had wisdom teeth pulled a few years ago but only on one side, so that doesn't explain the pain in both sides when I have wine. Anyway, glad to know I am not alone in this (and that it's not lymphoma! Thank you oncologist!)

just proved it today that alcohol is affecting my ear too.... i dont get any pain (maybe because ive gotten use to it) but i actually had blood coming out of one of my ear.  This just started recently over the pass few months but the only explanation i can think of is that its an allergic reaction, i get really red after a few shots and i guess it causes some swelling but its never caused me not to drink, but after this it ll be a while before i drink again... even my friend who is a doctor says "no way" but i just proved it tonight.  i ll see what he has to say after hearing this and if he can come up with a real explanation i ll post.

Wonder if you might be clenching and grinding your teeth when you sleep. Buy a night guard and give that a try for a week.
