Alcohol, refined sugar and caffeine definitely cause my Lupus to flare up. There is no doubt about that. They are all three inflammatory agents. You might be able to do it in moderation but if you find yourself in a flare they only exacerbate it.

I agree that it affects some, not all, of us with Lupus. It definitely affects me. My cheeks turn red and my heart starts pounding for hours. And I'll also get a headache. Even with just one glass of wine. I can even feel the effects of the tiny amounts of alcohol in a glass of kombucha, which I try to drink for gut health. Not sure it's worth it, though.

I actually now drink vodka and smoke and it has had a positive affect on how I feel. I actually developed Lupus symptoms when I quit drinking and smoking cold turkey in 2005. I had severe arthritic conditions occur and about 8 months later had a mild heart attack and tested positive for Lupus. For the past 11 years I did not drink or smoke, but then decided to and the strange thing is I actually feel much better. Go figure. I will probably quit the smoking in a month or so, but I will continue the drinking

I am 75 years old and have Lupus for 15 years. I do not drink or smoke and the last alcohol I had was 21 years ago in Mexico. I will be going this November, would a few Pina Coladas or any Tequila harm me? Thank you.

this could potentially be because of the yeast in beer I drink typically hard liquor or mixed drinks and they don't seem to cause a flare per se but they do however tend to make me more achy than next day I would assume this is because alcohol is processed through the blood and then obviously by the liver and kidneys. as our system filters at then it becomes more achy as we have an autoimmune system that is affecting our body and we are slowing it down with additional toxins. this is only my personal opinion/ experience and not medical advice.

Lupus is different for everyone. I am highly reactive to alcohol and have had to limit or even eliminate it from my diet. I get intoxicated very quickly and it effects my balance and coordination after consuming a very small amount. We should be kind to each other and understand that our symptoms and struggle is personal and unique.
