I have had sarcoidosis for 15 years. On my most recent MRI they found enlarged lacrimal glands in the eyes. I have read that sarcoid can cause this. What type of tests are done to verify that the cause is sarcoid? What are treatment options? What happens if it goes untreated? Thank you.

Hello there

Inflammatory enlargement of the lacrimal gland is called dacryoadenitis.

It can be separated into two groups: acute and chronic dacryoadenitis.

Severe pain, redness, and pressure in the supratemporal region of the orbit is charachesristic for acute dacryoadenitis but chronic dacryoadenitis is more common.

You asked if sarcoidosis can cause this condition and the answer is yes. One of the inflammatory causes of enlarged lacrimal glands or dacryoadenitis is sarcoidosis among few others such as Graves disease.

Treatment depends what type of dacryoadenitis you suffer from and if you want to be sure you will have to check with your doctor. He can let you know about your treatment options and together with you choose the best one.
