Waking up to a faster heart beat is actually quite normal. The heartbeat slows down during the evening, and as you awake the brain gives ypur body a shot of adrenaline which helps the body prepare for the natural processes your body deals with throughout the day. Hypochondria at its finest lol. Believe me... I know.

I'm not sure if you found out what was going on with you but thought I'd post for anyone who is reading this....

Definitely talk to a cardiologist about tachycardia. I had my first episode when I was like 14. I woke up with my heart racing and pounding and was convinced I was going to die. I was so scared I didn't even get up out of bed. It went away on its own after maybe 5-10 minutes. I had episodes like that off and on all through high school and even went to the ER after it wouldn't stop for like an hour. They did EKGs and said everything looked good, just fast. I saw a cardiologist later and he said same thing... nothing wrong with my heart. It was odd though that every once in a great while this would happen and it was so scary every time. Well a couple of years ago I wound up having another episode of that and I went to the ER because it wouldn't slow down at all for over a half hour and I wanted them to catch what was going on. The technology is a lot better now. I went in and they monitored me but also gave me an adenosine push which returned my rhythm to normal. Oh I was soooo thankful for that, even though it feels weird when they give that stuff to you. I saw a cardiologist about it and he said I have AVNRT and that there is a surgery they can do to correct it. So far the episodes are maybe once a year at most so I'm holding off on getting surgery. Supposedly its not a huge deal but i'm a nervous person.

Guys, Seems like most of you are thinking of a heart condition but this is more than likely just cronic anxiety.Have a cardiologist check your heart to make sure all is ok.Anxiety symtoms show up as almost every kind of symtom you can think of.If your heart is beating normal while you sleep and then you wake up and the heart takes of racing then more than likely its anxiety.I know its hell because I have it to.You need to get your life in order and reduce stress anyway possible.Get on meds for now to control the anxiety and calm you down.Start a moderate exercise daily and eat right for now.You will come out of this very quickly.

This was the same thing I had, not really something to play around with. I went to my local clinic after a few times of waking up feeling like I just drank a case of redbull. Had a 197 heart beat and they shipped me straight to the ER. Now I take meds daily and still have it from time to time.

take a look into superventricular tachacardia. my heart would race 180bpm to about 200bpm for no reason. usually when i was active but not always. I got an ablation and i have not had an episode since and that was almost a year ago. an ablation sounds scary, but it was harmless nad easy to recover. and very effective depending on the underlying cause. you need to see a cardiac surgen if you want to  get the ball rolling. I still get palpitations but they are benign. they are nasty sometimes but i finally am not stressed about them. a lot of people live with palpitations and it does not lower life expectancy. its just something else to deal with and youre not alone.

In January 2014, I had my first visit with Dr. B. One of the tests she ordered was for the MTHFR gene. The results confirmed that I was heterozygous for the A1298C mutation. So, I stopped eating all foods enriched with folic acid. And, I started supplementing my diet with Folate 200 mcg. (as L-methylfolate as Metafolin) once every other day.

***For the next three months, I had NO tachycardia! This was amazing because for the past FIVE YEARS, I had been to numerous doctors, had countless ER and ambulance trips, and was hospitalized three times – once in CICU because of tachycardia. No doctors could ever give me a definite reason for or help me with this condition which included waking up (two hours after falling asleep) with a heart rate anywhere from 100’s to 170’s bpm (beats per minute).

During those five years, I was unable to work at a scheduled job because of the nighttime tachycardia which left me physically and mentally exhausted and stressed. I am now happy to say that I have been working for the County in a part-time job, 20 hours per week, for the past year. And, I am in the process now of applying for full time positions. I am now enjoying life again with no tachycardia! I walk my dog every morning as soon as I wake up and swim laps a couple of times a week. In addition, I went on a vacation to Universal Studios last month and rode all the fun “pulse-pounding” rides during three days of nonstop action and had no tachycardia.

Another thing too – After wearing a holter monitor for a month during 2013, Dr. P (a cardiologist) told me that I had skipped beats and extra beats in the lower chamber (I think) of my heart that were not detrimental. Although, when I felt my heart skipping and fluttering throughout the day (almost every day) for five years it was upsetting to me and does tend to impact the quality of one’s life a bit. Well, the heart skipping and fluttering is gone now too.

I have not had to go to a doctor or ER for over a year for tachycardia and have been off all medication that had been previously prescribed for this condition. Including Klonopin that I had taken twice per day for five years because doctors thought it would help slow my heart rate if it was from stress. Clearly all those prescriptions were not the answer for me and didn’t prevent the tachycardia from occurring anyway.

***After no tachycardia for three months, I woke up with a 170’s. This was most disconcerting as I thought it was gone. The next morning, I looked at information online and decided to stop taking the L-methylfolate because I thought I might be “over methlylated” according to some sites. I struggled getting the right balance of methlylfolate for the next 3-4 months and had a few 100’s each month. Now, for the past 5-6 months I have taken Folate 50 mcg. (as L-methylfolate as Metafolin) every other day to every third day and have had no more tachycardia with this dose.

You need to consider whether you are a bit dehydrated. Found out the hard way that dehydration causes low blood pressure.
