Another brand of pine nuts - Cento from Stop&Shop, NJ. No country of origin on the package. Terrible aftertaste developed after 2 days, both in me and my husband and we ate only very few - maybe 10-15 nuts. Now after 3 days everything tastes awful still, but I am thankful for the tips on foods that should make it possible to eat again.

I found the following - I am currently suffering and waiting for the symptoms to go away - currently on day 3:
From the Foods Standard Agency website

Pine nuts associated with a bitter aftertaste

Thursday 16 July 2009
The Agency has received several reports over the last few months of pine nuts that have caused a bitter taste for some people who have eaten them.
This is not a food safety issue, but the Agency is trying to get more information about why this is happening.
The Agency has been in contact with the Poisons Centre in Belgium, which has researched this phenomenon. They investigated this issue in 2001 but have been unable to find a cause for the bitter taste that some people have experienced. Batches shown to cause the unusual taste and batches giving no effects were compared and no chemical differences could be found to which the bitter taste could definitely be attributed.
The bitter taste usually disappears after a few days but has been reported to last for as long as two weeks. As far as the Agency is aware, no adverse health effects have been associated with these symptoms.
The Agency will continue to monitor these reports. However, the current lack of information on why and how this effect occurs is limiting the scope for further investigation.
If you wish to contact us on this issue or have experienced this effect and would like your case recorded, please send details of the pine nuts you consumed and the length of time you experienced the bitter taste for to

This is astonishing. I have this awful taste in my mouth just as all of you have described and I recently ate baby pine nuts which I bought at Julian Graves. Except for the post from Australia (I'm in Ireland) this is several months after all the previous posts and I can't believe they're still being sold when so many people have complained. I've been ill recently and taking a cocktail of drugs and I mentioned the taste to my doctor who thought it must just be a side effect of one of the drugs, but I've reduced my drug usage considerably over the last couple of weeks and the taste has come back with a vengeance today. On reading this blog I realise I ate a handful of the pine nuts on Friday or Saturday night whilst cooking. This explains it - I just hope it goes away quickly; it's so unpleasant. I'm going to return them to the manufacturer and admonish them for not identifying the country of origin on the packet.

This is the second time I've been poisoned with "Pine Mouth" (the first time, last month, I didn't know what it was.) I've been eating pine nuts for many years and have never had this problem before! I think the ABC News article makes a good point about China using inedible pine nuts and passing them off as the edible ones!! Why doesn't the FDA do something? I'm pretty angry about not having functioning taste buds for several weeks. Shouldn't the public be notified about this issue?

I am SOOO glad I found this post - well, actually my husband found it - he was worried because never get sick, did the search and found this. I pan-roasted some pine nuts that I had stored in our freezer - don't even remember where I bought them (somewhere here in the Philly area) - threw them into a pasta dish I made Saturday night and here I was on Monday morning with this awful bitter taste - I describe it like bitting into a grapefruit rind and chewing it for several minutes - but the tastes remains there constantly. I hope my symptoms go away sooner than later - I tried an over the counter peroxide mouth rinse that I had in my cabinet and it seemed to help soften the pungent bitterness for a short time, or at least until the next time I ate. :-P

I am not sure how this connection first occured, but I truly believe there is a direct link between the bitter mouth syndrome and pinenuts. I also, after approximately 48 hours, developed the symptom. I did speak with the restaurant manager this evening after reading this forum. I passed this link on to her as well. I find it interesting that it appears some blood types are more suseptible. I am O positive.

The bitter in my mouth seems to originate from the left side of my tongue. I also developed an "acid bump" on my tongue prior too the bitterness. Also, I have some swelling in the gland just behind my mandible. Has anyone else noticed their poo having a peculiar odor?

I can't believe it. I thought my fillings were disentergrating or something. I was going to go to the dentist. We bought some pine nuts from trader joes (from russia or korea). They were yummy, and I ate a bunch. Then the next day everything started tasting weird and now its a constant bitter chemical taste in the back of my mouth. I would have never associated it to the nuts, I'm so glad I found these posts. Thank You. I called the FDA with the information posted. BTY, the food we got at trader joes has not been good, in fact, my husband and I are home sick with possible food poisoning from a can of tuna we bought there. NOT HAPPY!

I am having the same problem also. Ate a handful of pine nuts last Wednesday. Extreme bitterness started late thursday early friday. Now five days later still bitter. Not really metallic. Haven't found foods that taste okay but sweets are definitely the worst.

Thank God for the Internet. Thanks for everyone who posted the messages, it was extremely helpful. This problem is obviously still happening. I had the Pine nuts at a meeting 2 days ago in San Diego, and am experiencing the awful bitter taste for the last 2 days. My friend who was at the meeting had the same experience. I am hoping it will go away within 3-4 days. I will keep away from nuts in the future, specially when I do not know if they came from China.
I do not purchase anything made in China that is edible or dishes, since they may be carcinogenic and exposure to these products may cause harm.

Anyway thanks to all.

I am so glad, as well, finding this on the internet...I order some pine nuts, (here in the US) however I am not sure where they originated from. I bought them for making pesto later this summer. As soon as I got them, I put them, triple bagged, in the freezer. A few days ago I thought I would give them a try (ate a couple of small hands full) tasted just fine, put them back in the freezer.

Last night I cooked chicken and roasted potatoes with fresh rosemary and garlic (no pine nuts)....I thought this dish was positively awful, as it tasted so very bitter..yucky actually. My husband gobbled it up and could have eaten the entire chicken. I couldn't believe it, he is not a huge rosemary fan, and has a fairly picky pallet compared to mine. I asked him several times, doesn't this taste awfully bitter, I thought it had to be the rosemary..he thought that I was bit crazy, he loved it! I had worked outside all day and had put sunscreen on my face, so I thought, that what I am tasting, so I washed my face off very well, brushed my teeth (for the umpteenth time) still had the bitter metallic taste! It seems to be worse today.

I feel horrible that I have to throw away several pounds of pine nuts. The funny thing is I have been eating pine nuts for years and never had anything like this happening. Hopefully this will remedy itself fairly soon..what a unpleasant experience. I will try to post back and let all know how long this will take to get out of my system.

Also, I saw on a previous post that the taste is worse on the left side, mine is as well. This is very strange indeed.

Thanks to all who posted, so much relief!
