Me and my girlfriend bought some pine nuts two days ago in ASDA Llangefni on Anglesey. Yesterday I started to experience a really bitter horrible taste in my mouth and I assumed it was something to do with my gums, so I washed out my mouth with TCP and it made no difference, I started to worry that it could be something to do with my liver, so I looked on the internet for symptoms and I came across the pine nut problem. I was very surprised as I realised that I had eaten pine nuts a few days before. The taste is horrible and lingers all the time, it tastes as though I've swallowed soap, and is bitter and metallic. I'm relieved to find that this is the cause, as my girlfried was complaining of a similar taste, but she had a much milder problem than me. I hope it goes away soon, as everything taste horrible!! I don't think I'll be easting them any time soon!!

I am wondering if they are radioactive? Sign of radiation therapy is bitter taste in mouth. I have had it now for several days (and again, onset about 48-60 hours after first ingesting. 3 out of 5 who ate pine nuts got it) and along with the bitter taste I am belching and have indigestion when I eat. Wondering if indigestion is related to the horrible taste - but don't see too much on here about others having stomach symptoms. One of the others who was affected had stomach upset as well, but it has now passed. SO pissed that the FDA has not investigated this.

Hi there, just another thanks for those who found out the cause was pine nuts.
This taste drove me crazy, and of course the first hits for bitter mouth are liver and kidney problems, just to scare ppl :-)
Funny thing is, because i just started to avoid sugar, and pine nuts are a bit sweet, I ate a lot to get rid of this bitter taste, not
knowing yet this was the original cause days before that.

Bitter in San Diego... I made pesto with pine nuts and had it with shrimp. The aweful bitter taste started the next day. Now in the 4th day and I can't wait for it to go away. I can also confirm that breads make it worse and don't waste a good bottle of wine. I too thought I had some poison or liver damage. I often eat pine nuts and this is the first time this reaction has happened. I sure would be interested in what the cause is.

For me, the bitter taste lasted 4 days.

2/20 (Saturday) - I had pine nuts purchased from Whole Foods in Glastonbury CT
2/22 (Monday) - I first noticed the bitter taste
2/26 (Friday) - Bitter taste is gone

As others have said, hang in there--it does go away.

I feel so vindicated after reading all of this. I've been going crazy trying to figure out what's going on and then I read this and realized that I had a lot of pine nuts in a salad out ad dinner Monday (it's Thursday and I noticed it last night) so hopefully it goes away. So weird - thought it was a new moisturizer and my hands somehow transferred to mouth!!

Thanks all

Hi

I had a mediteranean pesto salad last Wednesday, and the bad taste started on about 48 hours later. I read this thread at the weekend, but it wasn't until today that I realised that I HAD eaten pine nuts in this salad. I asked the chef who believes they were fresh (he crushed them - which may release even more bad stuff?) but who knows how long they spent on a warehouse shelf somewhere.

So now it's Monday and I'm still suffering, hoping this is definitely what it is, and hoping it will go away soon. I find drinking isn't so bad - I can still drink beer, coffee and orange juice. I can eat yoghurt and tomato sauce smothered on things - I think this is because zang and acidic things override the taste. I can tell you, eggs and salmon taste like shite.

Add another victim to this ever-growing tale of bitterness. I love pine nuts, walnuts, all nuts, in fact. The problem is that they contain fat and fat that isn't refrigerated will go rancid. Store owners are not required by law (in Canada) to refrigerate nuts so nut lovers are eating a lot of rancid food. This can't be healthy. Ironic, isn't it? Try to eat better....

My suggestion is to contact your local health department and register a complaint. Make some noise and maybe we can get this law changed.

It worked with anchovies. Now store owners are required to put anchovies in the refrigerated section, even though they're tinned. And I doubt anchovies are as popular as pine nuts.

Thanks for posting everybody. You've put my mind at ease.

Add me to the pine nut bitterness! I thought I was imagining it this afternoon when I had pasta with a creamy mushroom sauce, figuring it must have been the mushrooms. Later at supper I had lasagna and tasted the same bitterness which I attributed to the mozzarella. When I tasted it even after eating cannoli I knew something was amiss. Cheese, grape juice each provoked bitterness. I checked the internet and was alarmed to see no less than 60 possible causes, some of them pretty serious. But then I noticed that absent any other symptom, it was probably caused by something I had eaten.

Sure enough, some of your stories I could have written. Monday I sprinkled some (very expensive) pine nuts on my yogurt. I purchased these at a Korean import store. Today (Wednesday) the bitterness started. I am relieved to know this only lasts a couple of days (I hope), but given the widespread reports of this, I will tell my GP and encourage her to notify the USDA and/or the CDC.

Yuck.

Incredible!

I can't believe this happened to SOOO many people.
I am too, a victim of the China pine nuts... I live in Toronto Canada and my husband and I bought them from T&T Supermarket downtown Toronto (Which is an asian supermarket).

We had them on salads, pasta, etc... and last night, I thought I was going to die... I threw up, diarrhea... and of course, really bitter taste in my mouth. I have fever, feel very lethargic and I can't seem to eat anything, because everything taste so bitter.

I hope this goes away fast, it's one of the most uncomfortable feelings ever. Obviously, we are not going to go back to T&T anymore.
