Another case here in Germany.
Had freshly prepared pesto on Saturday (August 22nd). Yesterday I noticed the bitter taste when chewing gum (Stride Sweet Peppermint) and drinking cofee (trigger?).
So in a few hours bitter day #2 will end. I hope it won't last that long?
I read in the paper from 2001 that fatty acids C16 to 18 may cause it. So I tried to increase contact of my tongue to several other (unsaturated) fatty acids (nuts, olive oil) but no improvement yet. I also thought about drinking tonic or eating something bitter to 're-calibrate' but I guess I will go on eating and drinking normal - to avoid 'messing up' something - and just wait.
Someone wrote his taste buds seemed inflamed. I couldn't notice that visually on my tongue but took an aspirin. In addition I thought about something anti-histaminic to rule out an allergic reaction. But again, I do not want to read in another forum. 'Yeah, I have it to and I guess because I took Zyrtec it lasted for 3 years until now' or something like that. I don't want to worsen it by any measures as it seems to go away after a few days... (weeks?)
Just reading about you guys in this forum made it a lot less threatening.
Bless the internet.

I too was having a bitter taste in my mouth that will not go away for the last three days. I haven't been able to I've been eating pine nuts from a bag that I bought from Trader Joes. I've never had this with pine nuts before. The bitterness I taste in my mouth is awful and won't go away.

Wow, add me to the list. I made some great pesto over the weekend, ate some both Saturday and Sunday nite. Monday afternoon the horrible taste started in the back of my mouth. Gets worse when eating things, and then after about an hour after a meal starts to subside. The nuts I bought were out of a bin in a well known respectable grocery store, nonetheless out of a bulk container. I don't think I will ever want to eat pine nuts again! How long will this last??? Make it go away! Yuk!

I had no idea what was going on! I had pine nuts in my tea while traveling in Odessa, Ukraine. Has anyone commented on bad breath? I am afraid to eat with other people. Has anyone tried a liver detox to make it end faster? I don't think I could take this for 2 weeks. Everything tastes gross but I have found dairy, fruit juices, and sweets to be the worst. Chewing mint gum and brushing my teeth 3 times a day ...

I ate pine nuts, too and my wife did, but she didn't experience this bad taste I have in my mouth. But she didn't eat as many and didn't eat them twice in one day, like I did-- this bitter taste started two days after eating them. I bought them from New Seasons in Oregon and I'm going tomorrow to tell them about this. In the meantime, I'm going to do the following: Three cups of green/mint tea a day and Acai smoothies with blueberries, raspberries, a banana and green tea. I'm also going to have organic carrot/apple/beet juice for the next couple of days, too. Funny, I thought it had something to do with the grapefruit oil I'd been spraying in the house to get rid of a stale odor. I knew instinctively that it had something to do with food, however, although there are a host of things that can cause a bad taste in the mouth as I'm sure most of you know: Dental health, indigestion/acid, and more serious causes, too, but it HAS to be the pine nuts-- it's very, VERY clear from reading all of these posts that date back years. Something is different now and that's why it's so important to be educated about what you eat. I bought the pine nuts from a bin and they were very expensive: $18.99 a pound! I'm sure tomorrow that I'll find out they're from China, too and you can bet that I'm getting my money back. I'm also going to tell them that I found out pine nuts spoil quickly. Thanks to you all for posting here!

I bought some pine nuts out of a bin at a local store. The attendant asked me if I wanted Chinese or Mediterranean pine nuts. I tried them both, thought the Chinese tasted better, so I bought a half pound or so. I made pesto and ate it that night with no effect on my taste, though I didn't think it was the best pesto I ever made. A week or so later I pulled the pesto out of the fridge, and though it was dark green on top, underneath it was still bright green and smelled fresh. So, I spread it on some salmon. It tasted great, so a couple days later I had it on some pasta. The next day, I started having the metallic taste everyone is describing. Yuck! A few days went by and it started to get a little better, but not having made the connection to pine nuts, I had some more pesto last night! I woke up this morning and the bitter taste is back with a vengeance. That's what prompted me to look for causes on the internet and how I found this forum. I feel relieved knowing that pine nuts is the probable cause, if also a little stupid for having eaten that pesto again and again!

Wow! So weird. I've been tasting a bitter taste in the back of my mouth for the past couple days, so I googled exactly that. This link came up... and guess what? I made pesto a couple days ago with Chinese pinenuts. Well I'll be! Nice to know I'm not crazy!

Hi. Just found this site because my husband had the insane idea (or so I thought) to google why I had this bitter taste in my mouth! Well, guess what - about 2 nights ago, I had a salad with pine nuts which I made at home. I don't think the pine nuts were rancid - I know what that smells like. I lightly toasted them and I would have smelled it if they were bad. But, I just checked the package and, sure enough, it said "product of China". I love pine nuts and eat them frequently. I have never had trouble before. However, I did buy these recently and they were a different brand than I've had before. So, I think the type of pine nut and where it comes from is what makes the difference.

I just wish there was some remedy! Everything tastes bad - especially bread. Must be the yeast reaction.

Ok one more case, add mine to the list! I bought pine nuts at Trader Joes in San carlos CA, on the package says "product of Korea, Russia or Vietnam" I did not notice ti with the pine nuts we used in Pesto a couple of week ago, but bitter taste started the day after a salad with raw pine nuts. I looked on line to see if it was a symptom of somthing else and viola! If it has been on this list since 2007 I wonder why arent there any warnings/ notices/ recalls?

I don't think it matters where the pine nuts came from but I can tell you that the pine nuts are probably causing the issue. Did you happen to figure out why?

Ha! Another person here. I've been getting gourmet salads with pine nuts lately and complaining to my wife of a weird chemical / bitter taste for the last few days. The Internet really does bring people together....I would never know what this was from, since the salads tasted fine.

Count me in - I am on day 2 of nasty bitter taste. Love pine nuts and have never had a problem until this week. Ate them with a salad for lunch on Friday and starting Sunday I woke up with the bitterness. Not fun! I bought them from the bulk-by-the-pound section of Whole Foods. I don't think I will ever eat them again - this whole thing stinks!

I am in Australia and am experiencing the same problems as described by everyone in this thread.

My husband and two kids all ate the same Pine Nuts as me, but none of them have the symptoms - the only difference is that I ate them raw whilst I was cooking, my family only ate pine nuts that had been toasted in a frypan. Maybe cooking them well removes the bitterness?

I have reported it to my local supermarket where I bought them in bulk, they are checking to see if they are coming from a different supplier as I've been buying them there for years with no problems.

I am also going to report this to Consumer Affairs today.

Another case to add to the long list. I ate some pine nuts from a bag of Salad Sprinkle bought from Holland & Barrett. Best before date is Dec 09. There weren't even that many pine nuts in the mixture! I also ate quite a few pistachio nuts and monkey nuts at the same time. I read on one of the posts that there are high levels of cadmium in pine nuts and other nuts, also shellfish and seafood. I ate the nuts on Tuesday and Wednesday and started with the horrible metallic taste on Thursday. I also ate some prawns on Thursday and wondered if that made the problem worse. Has anyone else also eaten seafood, shellfish or other types of nuts around the same time as consuming the pine nuts and then experienced problems?
I have eaten pine nuts many times in the past without experiencing any symptoms at all.
I can't believe there is no warning on the packets. I would never have known what this was if not for the internet and after researching it I can't believe there are so many cases especially as this seems to last for up to 2 weeks in most cases. This is my 2nd day and I wish there was something I could do or eat to make it go away. It's such a vile taste at the back of my mouth and in my throat and starts as soon as I start to eat anything and lasts for about 15 minutes after i've finished eating.
The Food Standards Agency reports on 16/7/09 that there had been several reports over the last few months of pine nuts that have caused a bitter taste for some people who have eaten them but say that this is not a food safety issue.
Try telling that to the countless number of people who seem to be affected.
They say if you wish to contact them to send details of the pine nuts you consumed and the length of time you experienced the bitter taste for to ]
I would urge anybody who has suffered to email them and maybe something will be done about this.
