Everything tastes terrible...couldn't figure it out until I read this post--thanks! I had pine nuts yesterday for the first time in probably 5 years.

I too have a bitter taste(going on day3) in my mouth, looked it up and found gum disease and liver disease etc.. I can say "ditto"to exactly what has been happening to others here because it's exactly the same with me...a pine nut link caught my eye. I ate some a few days ago after making some fabulous pesto with my recent basil harvest. I purchased the pine nuts from Shoprite in New Jersey . They bag does not say if they came from China only that they come from a local distributor. Please, please, please call your LOCAL FDA office and complain. I called the 1-888-safefood number and the woman who answered was rather rude and made me feel like an id**t. Then I called the NJ line and the woman was interested and took my complaint and they will look into and get back to me. I will post the info when I get it. If you live in NJ you can call here 973-331-4917.

I'm in Perth, Australia, and this blog site answered my concerns!!! YAY!! I developed the bitter taste sensation the morning after eating a salad with pine-nuts from Schmears Cafe in the city.
Possible temporary cures
I have found that alkaline forming foods seem to help - especially lemon!!! I also found gargling rice vinegar helps.
Thanks for everyone's postings.

Me too! I live in Sydney Australia and have the same thing. Thanks for these posts. My 15 year old son thought I was crazy. I've saved money on a trip to the dentist and don't have to worry about dying of some weird disease. Yeh!

I'm another one for this same affliction. I bought pine nuts in one of the southern California Costco stores. The nuts were produced in China. I had 2 tablespoons of nuts on Wednesday evening, found on Friday that all food was tasting terrible. Am hoping to feel better by day five, as noted by a previous poster. Thankful to have found this site!

We ate pine nuts in a stir fry 3 days ago (pine nuts from JG) so glad to have found this site - HOWEVER doesn't something need to be done about this - its just not acceptable - how can business's sell this stuff and also what is causing it???

Thanks China!
This is bloody outrageous. Everyone is so "relieved" and thankful that they don't have a brain tumour, etc.
Well, instead we have toxic levels of rancid fat circulating our bodies. Bodies that are trying to expel the c**p anyway they can.
When rancid linoleic acid (the same rancid omega 3 fat as in these pine nuts) is fed to rats, they die!
It creates rampant, nasty free radicals in the body which wreak havoc, damaging millions of cells, contributing to cancer, heart disease and all that great stuff.
Government agencies say there is "no major health concern". They can fxck right off. Maybe it's not "major" but it should still bloody well be addressed. Just another case of business and money being of paramount importance to everything the system/government stand for.
I've alerted Health Canada, who, as expected, are doing nothing. The local Loblaws grocery store in which I purchased the nuts have agreed to take the bulk pine nuts off the shelf immediately and not to put any further nuts originating from China out on the floor. I hope they weren't just trying to appease me at the time. I'll have to follow up. What about all their other stores?
Much more needs to be done about this.

Made Pesto (my favourite) and am stuck with this most disgusting taste in my mouth - how will I ever eat pine nuts again?

I have this now too. Ate a handful of pine nuts that were opened but sealed, bought about 3 months ago from safeway in San Francisco. I ate them 5 days ago, and have had the bitter and burnt taste for the last 4 days.
Very glad it is pine nuts. From looking elsewhere on the internet, I thought it was a combination of crohn's disease, a brain tumor and/or cancer.
Trying to find a cure. No luck so far with the antidote. What's the opposite of a pine nut?

I am in Canada and I am suffering too. I am on day 4 and this is horrible... I have called the CFIA and I am going to be taking them back to the store where I bought them. The package doesn't say they are from China but after reading pages and pages from this forum I am guessing they are. I am calling the packager/distributor now.

Hi,
Same symptoms. I started searching and came across this forum. I too ate pine nuts last week, Once in a pesto I made myself with nuts from Costco. Other time in a restaurant. How long has this bad taste lasted for you? Never had it before. Check out this info on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_nut
Hoping this is not anything toxic. I would feel foolish to go to my doctor, but am thinking of writing to the owner of the restaurant.

Can't believe how many posts are on here about the bitter taste and pine nuts. I got this about 6 months ago in the UK and though I'd got mouth cancer. It did pass away after a day or two and so I sort of forgot all about it (paranoia gone). However this week, whilst on holiday in Nice, France, we went out for a meal and I had pasta with pesto. It was a really nutty pesto (in fact nothing like those you get in jars), but by 2 days later I had the horrible bitter taste in my mouth whenever I ate. I too threw away wine thinking it was off and couldn't eat for another 2 days. This really spoilt my holiday.
I would ask if anyone knows who to contact beyond the Local Council about this, we should be doing it. I did have an upset stomach too - hope this wasn't anything to do with it!!! Feel like I've been poisoned after reading the toxicology report from
Has anyone tried contacting WHO??
