What I've learned: take 1/2 pill at a time, with 1/2 hr or longer break between taking each half.
Take while standing up with a full glass of milk or water (never coffee, soda, etc.!).
Sit calmly: do not lie down or exert yourself within an hour or so after taking each half.
Even with these precautions, I still experience the problem occasionally, so I am going to start taking Maalox or Mylanta along with it. My pharmacist also recommends a longer-term solution such as Prilosec, but I'm going to have a physician check everything out first.

Hello everyone, I had the same problem of swallowing a vitamin pill the other day which seemed to have gotten lodged in my esophagus and started causing a great deal of discomfort in my chest the whole day and later started causing pain in my upper back between my shoulder blades each time I swallowed something as simple as my siliva. The discomfort was unbearable and had me more worried than I cared to have been. I actually read a few of your complaints on this forum and feedbacks regarding diagnosis those of you got from doctors and from what I read all our symptoms seem similar and follow the traces of hiatus hernia. I went online to find at home remedies that at relive the issue. I did an exercise I watched on YouTube and after doing the routine it seemed to have relieved a lot of the discomfort and pain although it didn't get rid of the issue it did however help. I also found another website with 10 natural remedies as well that one can intake to help the problem. I chose to do one out of the ten suggestions and it helped a bit too which was put half a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water and drink all at once (though it didn't mention if the water should be cold or hot, I just went ahead and used lukewarm water). All this was enough for me to feel comfortable enough to get some sleep but it did not take it away completely. This morning, I woke up with slight discomfort so I decided I needed a good bowel movement to empty out my stomach a bit (pure yogurt works for me) I had my yogurt and in an hour I passed stool and all the discomfort is completely gone. I hoping this info might help you guys as well.
I couldn't link the video for the exercise but just Google 'How to fix a hiatus hernia - Dr. David Williams'
