Will your dr prescribe you B12 injections, I take them for pernicious anemia. Low levels of b12 is dangerous and I know swallowing pills are a nightmare when you have a health problem. Just me humble opinion. Best Wishes!!

I just found this forum because of the obvious reason, same thing!  I think it is my fish oil pills, b/c that is what i am burping, never happened before and have been taking them for a while, I noticed lately that this was happening, I think maybe the jell like capsule casing fish oil is in is what is caught....slight pressure in my chest, very active runner and have had no issues running as of yet...but chronic discomfort for a few days now

This happened to me when taking a vitamin C pill. I put the pill in my mouth and went to get a glass of water to take it. By the time I took a sip of water, the smooth coating around the pill that makes it easier to take had dissolved very quickly, leaving the rest of the pill rough and impossible to swallow. It wasn't very big, but I still choked on it and automatically spit it out. It felt like my throat had been badly scratched so I drank a full glass of water and went to bed without attempting to take another pill. When I woke up in the morning, my entire esophogus and chest were burning and aching. Two days later, it feels like its only getting worse.

I have been on the same meds now for a few weeks and no problem until one night i took this and went right to bed.  Apparently the few sips of water i had were not enough because come to find out with this type of antibiotic you must drink at least 8 oz of water.

I ended up in the middle of the night in major pain with burning and then more pain when swallowing.  Come to find out the pill had not made it all the way down and sat in my Esophagus while sleeping and started to burn a hole in it.  It has been about 4 days since it happened but the damage was done that night regardless of how much water i drank after.  It's called Doxycycline induced esophageal ulcer.

I also have a pain or pressure feeling in my chest when taking deep breathes.  All of this is caused by the meds and damage it did that night.

If you are having these symptoms even days after you should definately go see your Dr and make sure they refer you to a GI Specialist to investiage more.

Hello, I am having the same problem. Is there anything I can take to relieve the problem. It feels like the Doxycycline pill is stuck in back of my throat.

I love when I try to look up solutions and answers to my dilemmas, to find web pages where everyone posts same or similar dilemma, but no resolution or tips on what to do. Obviously if it gets serious enough, most people already know to see a doctor or talk to someone. I guess if anything, try to drink a glass of milk and cross your fingers that it isnt imminant.

Eat some banana or a spoonful of almond butter followed by drinking lots of water. The goal here is that the sticky food will stick to the pill, and carry it down in the flood of water. If that does not work, it will just take time.

I have been on Doxycycline for about 20 days for Lyme Disease.  I have been experiencing this same discomfort.  It feels like the pill is stuck and I am having difficulty swallowing.  I am drinking large amounts of water as we speak but feel like I could vomit any minute.  Will update once feeling has subsided.  It is a very uncomfortable feeling making me feel anxious.  It almost feels like my airway is closing.  I had difficulty eating my dinner last night.  I have no other symptoms aside of slight nausea if stomach was empty when taking.

Although this thread was started a long time ago, it sounds like there are numerous things going on with different individuals.

1) Pills can't get stuck in your esophagus unless you have an outpouching that previously existed(this would be obvious as other things would get stuck as well).

2) I noticed a common finding with the majority of your posts....you are all quite young(as am I) and lifestyle(acidic/alakly foods, artificial drinks..soda, alcohol, smoking, etc) contribute to your feeling of this "stuck pill/pressure".  The effects are typically acid reflux to the antibiotics that you took...they are powerful drugs that we underestimate and commonly cause the gastro-intestinal issues like you all described.

3) The iritation of your esaphagus(although you may not have felt it) has more than likely already existed prior to your taking the medication/pills you describe..they were the "Straw that broke the camels back" so to speak.

4) Peptobismol can help, but I have found from experience that there is no one remedy that can help that feeling, so be pro-active and avoid things that will further excacerbate(make worse) the increased acid production in your stomach.  Avoid spicy foods(ketchup, bbq sauce, hot sauce included), chocolate(yes chocolate).  If something makes your symptoms worse...avoid doing that for the time being...except for taking the antibiotics(unless you spoke with your MD).  Taking an over-the-counter medication like prilosec OTC daily for up to 14 days can help...just keep in mind can take a few days to work.

5) Although it sucks to go see your doctor...do it if you are really feeling bad/nervous! Avoid going to the ER for this, unless you are having difficulty breathing or chest pain that is not localized to your throat..instead seek your MD or an urgent care.

I hope I hit on everything that you all mentioned...and that this will help someone that comes across this in the future.

Addition to my comments...
1) Pill can't get permanently stuck..they can move slowly through your esophagus...

If this happens a lot..see a GI specialist(they can send a camera down your esophagus and take pictures of what is actually going on.

Drug-induced esophagitis

Several oral medications may cause tissue damage if they remain in contact with the lining of the esophagus for too long. For example, if you swallow a pill with little or no water, the pill itself or residue from the pill may remain in the esophagus. Drugs that have been linked to esophagitis include:

Pain-relieving medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve, others)Antibiotics, such as tetracycline and doxycyclinePotassium chloride, which is used to treat potassium deficiencyBisphosphonates, including alendronate (Fosamax), a treatment for weak and brittle bones (osteoporosis)Quinidine, which is used to treat heart problems

Also can happen if you go to sleep right after or a laying down when you take the medication.

It'll go away with time.

Go to the doctor. Or emergency room. The pill may have burned a hole in your throat. Why would you take time to ask questions on the internet with your systems, instead of getting help in the first place?
