Thank you silvasnowbunny!! Today I woke up and have felt like I had a pill lodged in my throat all day! I tried drinking tons of water and anything i could think of! When I read your post about Doxyxycline, I realized that was the problem! I take Doxy 2x a day! I took one right before bed and woke up with that feeling! Thanks for your help!

I also started takling antibiotics for a sever sinus problem, had to start even taking penicilline because the 1st time didn't work. I'm beginning to see a trend here. The pills, I beleive they may irritate the esophgus.

I'll get back to y'all when I stop taking the pills to see if it gets any better ot not. Good luck.

I was recently prescribed a low dose of Zoloft (for PMS) and I have never had trouble swallowing pills or with reflux, but with this (tiny!) one the "stuck" sensation is sometimes unbearable, even when I take it with a meal. At one point it was so bad that I tried to throw it up- I failed, but the attempt actually left me feeling a little better. My stomach was still not pleased, but the chest/esophagus pain was gone. Swallowing ice cubes also soothes it a bit.

I have found that taking my pill before or during my meal gives me less discomfort than when I take it after.

I was on an antibiotic that read as such. I thought I drank enough fluids to flush it, but felt like something had stuck. Turns out that a part of the shell of the pill had got lodged in my esophagus. A few weeks later the feeling did not go away. The doctor had to go in with a camera and some sort of scope and dislodge what was now becoming grown over esophageal tissue. My recommendation is to take these pills with warm water to help dissolve and try and wash it out with hot water if it feels stuck. Avoiding such an incident is best, nobody wants the pain and or bills of such a procedure.

Oh, and it was doxycycline. Though the best part is a was re-prescribed it for any possible infection of the procedure. It is a mean antibiotic. Though probably necessarily so.

At this point I'm pretty sure that it's heartburn. I'm on doxycycline right now and I'm supposed to take food with every pill. I actually took one right before bed and about 2 hours after my last meal, thinking that would be enough. I woke up at about 3 AM with horrible pain in my chest like there was something lodged in the mucous membranes leading to my lungs or in that general area of the esophagus. I spent the next 20 minutes drinking a half gallon of water and eating, trying to get it down. No relief. I just took some seltzer thingy, seeing as it has antacid properties, I could barely keep it down; I was heaving after swallowing that last sip. Not fun. But I am feeling some degree of relief at the moment so I believe that it may indeed by heartburn. I've never had heartburn before so that could be a large factor in me originally thinking that there was a pill lodged in my chest.

You are experiencing pill induced esophagitis. I'm also on Doxycycline and this has now happened to me twice. Both times I took the pill shortly before bed with just a few sips of water.

Google Doxycycline induced esophagitis. I was in extreme pain when drinking/eating, even breathing, for about 12 days.

Thank you to everyone for posting on here! A google search brought me to this website as I have been dealing with extreme lower pain in my chest/esophagus for 6 days now when eating and sleeping. The doctor said it's "esophagitis" or "acid reflux" and it has been so annoying not to mention painful, so I began to search for answers as to why this "esophagitis" has just flared up out of nowhere.

I woke up at about 2 in the morning six days ago with so much pain in my lower chest and I didn't know what was going on. Most of you describe the same feelings above - like you've swallowed a candy or a carrot by accident and it's stuck (same sort of feeling that really hurts!). It was so uncomfortable and has been for the past six days! When eating, it feels like someone is ripping your chest open and the food has trouble going down.... until it passes a certain point. It brought me to tears on a couple occasions (and I wouldn't consider myself a big baby but the pain of eating and constant burning was this bad!). It has also been waking me up at night time and I have been "sleeping" (trying to) with a few pillows under my head with the hopes that being elevated will help to catch a few zzz's.

I have Nexium 40 mg from my Dr. to take two 2x per day for the next few days so I am hoping that this goes away soon because it hurts and is so very uncomfortable! In reading all these posts above, I figure that I can link this esophagitis to an antibiotic med I have been on for 30 days (just recently finished) - Doxycycline. I can't believe this med can cause this much pain and I don't recall being told NOT to take it before bed or to take it with a tonne of water, etc. The antibiotic worked to clear up a random face rash, but oh my goodness, it has caused a very painful esophagus problem now! I'd rather deal with the face rash any day. I wonder how long I will be feeling this way? Does anyone know how long this "Doxycycline induced esophagitis" lasts and what the quickest solution is? This esophagitis bothers me almost all day off and on - not only eating and sleeping! Just curious because I would like to be back to "normal" soon...

I am not a doctor.. but with all the research I have been doing.. I am trying these things..

If necessary, occasional acid reflux can be treated with over-the-counter medication, including:

■Antacids, such as Tums

■H-2-receptor blockers, such as cimetidine (Tagamet HB) or famotidine (Pepcid AC)

■Proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole (Prilosec OTC)

I learned that real honey will coat the esophagus and if any acid tries to come up, it will keep it from hurting you.

I am also taking ceyenne pepper pills.... because in it natural form (uncooked) it has healing properties for the stomach. It also fights the acid in your stomach...(opposite of what you may think it would)

If you have trouble with gas.. pain in chest.. and cannot burp.. sit straight up with shoulders back (not up) and put chin to chest and it will come out....

please let me know if it helps you... and if you have any other questions....

I had the same thing after taking doxycillin for 4 days, I couldn't swallow food anymore due to intense burning sensation after swallowing even water. This type of antibiotic is known to cause irritation of the esophagus. What your doctor told you was irresponsible, you have to be very careful. I stopped taking the antibiotic so my esophagus could heal and it did after 2 days. But then all my original symptoms came back so the doctor put me back on the antibiotic but on the tablet version instead of the capsules. Since I've been taking them, I'm very careful. I have a glass of water before, with and after taking them, as well as a meal. I make sure I take them morning and afternoon so I'm not lying down. Even if you're feeling sleepy you just can't lie down for AT LEAST half an hour but to be safe make it one hour. Also for the two days while I couldn't swallow, I ate lots of yogurt with good bacteria and manuka honey which people actually take for ulcers in the mouth. I think this facilitated the healing as well. Don't swallow any pills or eat any solid food while you're healing because it might make it worse. So far since being more careful and taking the tablet form of doxycillin I haven't had any symptoms and hopefully they won't come back.

So in summary

* Eat lots of yogurt and take manuka honey, your esophagus should heal on its own
* Try to switch to tablet form of doxycillin
* Drink glass of water before and with tablet, then have meal, then have another glass of water after
* Don't lie down for AT LEAST 30 minutes after taking it, but preferably not at all

GOOD LUCK

Some of the food getting stuck issues I read that you all have above, I get also... I have come from a hernia in my lower esphogus, right above my stomache.... where food gets stuck in this small socket and then blocks up my throat and it causes me to choke up the food that gets stuck... sometimes a big gulp of water helps and sometimes its so stuffed up I feel like Im drowning and have to throw everything stuck in my throat up....

But today out of the blue I have a lump in my upper esphogus that I can feel when I swallow.

I have been taking Doxy for over a week and this same experience just happened. I think I didn't drink enough water and then went right to bed.
Coffee and alcohol aggravate it. Ice cream works well :)
Also, has anyone tried antacids? Like tums?

They seem to help.
Just read up on when it is safe to take them in between your antibiotic schedule.

hey guys has anyone found out the way to relive or soothe or even treat the reaction caused by doxycyline reaction cos am in pain my email address is ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed

I'm having the same problem, I've just finished my weeks course of doxycycline and the pain I'm having in my chest is unbearable! Its day 6 now and the pain seems to be getting worse (hopefully worse before getting better!) Eating food is almost impossible without having to pause for at least a minute after every mouthful! I was advised by the doctor to just try heart burn tablets which have been no help what so ever! I've seen a lot of people on here have said it goes away on its own after 9-12 days, is there anything you can recommend me doing in the mean time, its getting soo bad im starting to struggle to drink water! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :-)

I've recently went through a bad situation in which I accidently swallowed Colorox (bleach) that my girlfriend put in a watter bottle. Make a long story short-my esophagus got irratated. My symptoms were: feeling a lump in my throat, constant clearing of the throat, food feeling like it was getting stuck in my throat, and feeling like i wanted to burp but it always got stuck in my throat. This is what I tried that so far has lessen my symptoms. One, Aloe Vera juice soothes the esophagus and gargling with it helps too. Second, warm liquids allow decrease inflamation. Third, when eating keep your mind on something else. Sometimes, the more you think about it the worse it gets. I'm still dealing with some swallowing problems but these things I've mentioned has helped. Let me know how it goes.[/quote

Just wanted to say thanks for this post. I was starting to get worried about my symptoms lasting so long and then I saw this post with exactly how I have been feeling. I haven't tried the aloe vera juice yet, but warm liquids and antacids seem to be slowly making a difference.

I'm having the same problem except that I took mefloquine last night before I went to bed. Almost immediately I could tell it was stuck, so I drank more water. I assume the pill is gone now, but the damage is already done. My mouth is producing tons of saliva, but it's painful to swallow. It is especially painful when I twist any degree left or right, when I bend, sit or lie down. I've been drinking lots of water and had breakfast in the morning, but the symptoms persist. I also have discomfort in my stomach with the feeling that I need to burp, but the air is trapped.
