I had the same problem. I took Doxycycline and it felt like something was stuck in my throat. I stopped taking it for a few days and started back. Same thing. Only now its worse. It wont go away and it hurts my chest. Did it just go away on its own after you stopped taking the medicine?

Hello there, me too im having these symtoms for about a month now.. really worried about it.

When eating i feel as if all sits in my esophagus and drink water also just sits on the food and slides away after few seconds.

I also have lot of gas which i am unable to pass upwards since childhood "understand what i mean". I am worrying if it is not this gas problem that is preventing my food to go down properly in my stomach.

As when the food finally go down, i got sort of gas running upwards in my esopagus, but sometimes feels that the gas is struck under the food i ate.

Gone to 3 doctors, all with diagnosis: Stress!!! how can stress cause gas and pain in esophagus?

HELP PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE.............

SAME EXACT story that I have. Just wondering how long it took for your healing? I don't think I need to go to the doctor after everything that I've read but this is terrible!! Your post was over a year ago but hopefully you'll get this.....thank you!

If you get an answer to this PLEASE let me know. I took an antibiotic 3 days ago with just a little sip of water & it feels like my esophagus is burning up. I have now learned to take a full glass of water with any medications.

I'm so thankful I came across this thread when I did. I normally don't look up my symptoms because sources aren't always valid on the internet, but this thread hit it spot on. I have been taking Doxycycline for two weeks for my acne and have suffered these symptoms: pain or burning in the esophagus, like as if I had swallowed a pill too big and that soreness in the throat still had not gone away after a day but had continued to worsen. The pain has gotten so bad that I've lost weight because it has been too painful to swallow and consume food. I am able to drink water of course, but even that was a painful task and still is. After reading most of these posts and seeing "erosion of the esophagus", I finally just called my doctor and was informed that this is actually a very common side effect of Doxycycline and that it was due to the acidic level and size of the pill. Tomorrow I'm going to visit my doctor and we are going to try another plan by taking a different antibiotic that does the same job and is smaller in size and see how that will work. I really don't want to take Doxycycline again even if it is in a smaller size. After going through this I don't want to have anything to do with it. I've stopped taking the pill for a couple of days now and I still have trouble eating and swallowing foods and liquids. No matter how soft, every consumption of food feels like a massive solid golf ball painfully traveling from the base of my throat all the way down into my chest, as if I can feel where the food is traveling down my body internally. I've forced myself to swallow some pain medicine every now and again so I am able to eat more and stay hydrated. I'm not a doctor but I'd advise that if you are going through this c**p then you need to stop taking this pill and call your doctor immediately. Don't wait for a response from a random user/guest on the internet to give you the answer to what may be harming your body, get the answer from your doctor. And if you're under age you need to tell your parents what your are feeling differently or feeling any pain, keep them up to date on how your body is doing. Whenever you are on an antibiotic or taking any form of medication, you have to watch out for symptoms at all times and research the warnings or call the number on the bottle to ask about the symptoms/warnings. In the future ask your doctor up front as well, this really goes for anyone of any age who is taking medication. I apologies for this post being sooo incredibly long, felt it would be wrong of me to not say anything when I've been experiencing this too.

If you've been off Doxycycline and you're still experiencing soreness in the esophagus from the result of it, here are some tips that are helping me cope with the pain that may work for you, depending on the degree of pain you are experiencing of course. Some of it sounds silly but for me it has helped greatly:

Drink water in small sips. Try to push out the air in your mouth when you drink so you do not swallow air bubbles, because these small air bubbles that are accompanied with the action of gulping can be very painful when traveling down a soar esophagus. Keep the temperature of the water somewhere around lukewarm. The throat is in the process of heeling so it will be extra sensitive to temperature. I usually go with slightly cool water during the day if it is burning and then warmer water in the evening to help relax and ease the pain. It is also helpful to drink water with your food, like take a small sip in between bites or after a bite to help wash down and clear the throat of any lingering food that may coat your esophagus and irritate it further. Not to mention, you need to be hydrated to stay alive, no matter how long it takes to sip away your full needed daily intake of water.

Let out your burps. Holding in your burps can be extremely painful when your esophagus is sore and still healing. A burp is brought on by an air bubble of gas from within your body, or the stomach rather, from processing foods, and if you hold that burp in it can be very painful forcing it all the way back down your esophagus. (well from experience anyway, whenever I held in a burp, especially a massive one, it was extremely painful keeping it in and feeling it travel all the way back down my throat ugh.)

Drink tea or warm water. Drinking tea, especially 1st cut loose tea, can be very good for you and therapeutic for the throat. I recommend green tea with honey and to avoid any strong or acidic fruity teas. Honey has been also known to help heal burns so naturally it will sooth a sore throat. Don't drink the tea too hot, I've found warm to lukewarm to be the perfect temperature to relax the throat. Remember your throat will be very very sensitive so keep in mind too hot/warm of temp can hurt on the way down.

Taking some calcium tablets like Tums can help. This will help maintain the acidic levels in your stomach that may be causing your throat to burn. Look at a pH scale and you will find that Milk is a neutral. Drinking milk or eating cheese and other dairy products can help lower the levels of your stomach acids that may be burning your throat. Avoid excessive consumption of fruits, if you've looked at the pH scale, you will see lemons is a runner up to stomach acids, and then battery acid leading on the highest acidic levels. Make sure you are not on Doxycycline or be sure to space out a two to three hour time frame in between taking Doxycycline(if you are still taking it) and any antacid/calcium tablet because one of the listed warnings was to not take them together at the same time.

Get lots of sleep. From what I've read, apparently the body needs around 8 to 9 hours of sleep on a regular sleeping schedule in order to function properly. Ultimately the most important tip is to rest up and get as much sleep needed in order for your body to heal up. Another helpful tip before going to bed would be to eat two to three hours before sleeping. If you go to bed on a full stomach, you won't obtain the deep sleep needed every night because your body will be too busy digesting food, which can also be very acidic for the throat if you are laying down. Make sure to space out your meals accordingly, take time to relax while sitting up so you may allow your body to digest properly, then later at night let it focus on only resting. This in general will also help you with having less nightmares and being more healthy in many other aspects because health and sleep come hand in hand.

If necessary take pain medicine. If the pain is keeping you from eating, drinking, or sleeping, you may want to consider something that will help you deal with the pain. I've been dealing with the pill form of light over the counter pain medicine, and advise if you are resorting to a pain medicine, take it in liquid form if possible because swallowing more pills isn't gonna do your sore throat any favors. Thanks to pain medicine I've been able to eat more meals and drink more to stay healthy. You should ask your doctor though if it is alright to take a pain medicine if you are taking anything else, or see what they would recommend you to do.

hope this helps in some way, but never substitute these tips instead of getting a professionally trained doctor's help and perspective on the matter, because I am not a doctor and I would not want to turn anyone the wrong way. Hope everyone on here has or will get the help and answers they've been seeking and feel much better soon <3

I, too, have GERD and have been taking Nexium for years, however I'm convinced that this is not the problem. I also had the cervical spine surgery you mentioned where they went in through the front of my neck and removed two vertebrae and replaced with new. Here's where everyone needs to pay a little attention. After the surgery I felt like I couldn't swallow a thing; pills, water, definitely no solid foods. Everything that went down would try to come back up to clear the sensation of having something "stuck" in my esophagus. Also, when I did swallow it would burn all the way down, but not so coming back up. It took weeks for the situation to alleviate. That was three years ago. Just recently I had the same problem all over again, unbelievable!!!! I racked my brain for days to try to figure out what I might have done that was a common factor between the two flareups. And then it hit me!! Post neck surgery I was placed on a regiment of steroids and antibiotics (thus swallow problem). Four days ago and three years after my neck surgery, I had a mega steroid injection in my knee due to miniscus issues. The very next day I have identical issues with swallowing that I had post neck surgery. I asked my doctor about it and he told me that steroids can and do leave the sight of the injection and make there way into the blood stream where it can cause thrush like bacteria called Candidiasis (yeast) to occur within the esophagus, stomach. Candidiasis can occur just about anywhere on or in the body. One of the major contributors to getting the bacteria is the introduction o fsteroids and/or antibiotics (I was taking both when I had my neck surgery)! He prescribed me a med called fluconazole. I took the first recommended dose at night and was feeling 75 percent better the next day. Stayed on the prescribed regiment for five days as was recommended by my doctor....problem solved! This is/was my experience with the "feels like something is stuck in my esophagus" issue. This was my situation and I recommend that any and all SEE THERE OWN DOCTOR for any perscription meds. This post is to help those that have suffered as I have, HOWEVER, I am NOT a doctor and your situation may require a different form/type of therapy. Good luck to all the sufferers. I have felt your pain.

I got mono the day before christmas eve so naturally, i still have it. It has bothered my throat the most. At first, my throat was swollen and i couldn't swallow anything, that including my own spit. I went to the hospital on christmas eve into christmas morning because i hadn't eaten anything in a few days or drank anything for that matter. When i went, they told me i had mono after a few test and what not and they gave me a z pack. That helpped me a lot but each day one thing would get better and another would get worse. Yesterday, half of my throat was perfectly fine and the other wasnt and it ached so much on my jaw and neck. (This half still being swollen) Now, i think it may be less swollen but not only does my jaw, neck and now tongue ache, it feels like there is something stuck in my throat, just guessing but the size of an ibuprofen pill. WHAT IS IT AND CAN I SIMPLY JUST CUT MY THROAT OUT AND CALL IT A LIFETIME?

I have has similar problem, when I try to swallow food or even liquid it get almost stuck. I have to take slow deep breaths to relax my esophagus to allow it to expand enough to allow the food or liquid to go down. It got so bad it felt like there was a cork inside and when it finally passed it hurt so bad. I have since had my esophagus stretched three time and it has helped a lot. . I have gastro reflux quite bad plus crohn's and colitis....I hope this helps. good luck!

I am having this exact same issue! Never had a problem with any pills in the past- I'm talking massive horse pills- no problem... But Zoloft! Those tiny suckers have been seeming to "stick" in my throat more and more. I also tried vomiting, didn't help. I seem to just have to wait it out... For hours till it goes away! So frustrating!
