I too was diagnosed with the same stress fracture in my left hip. My doctor told me best option was to put in 3 screws. I had this surgery 2 weeks ago and I am sooo much better off already. I am on crutches for the next month and then go back for reeval. The pain has decreased by 80% already. i still have some groin pain when going up or down the stairs, but no pain on front of upper left hip that was terrible before the surgery. I could hardly walk before diagnosis with an MRI. Sad news is doc says no running for at least 6 months but that I will be able to spin. I was running about 50 miles a week and every day I ran. I think I will have to take rest days in between running when I am finally able to get back out there. The surgery was totally worth it. Two days of pain and had to take pain meds but after that I was cruising on the crutches without pain meds. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone,

I have been diagnosed with a femoral neck stress fracture 2 months, and the pain started 4 months ago. I am a 25 yrs old female runner.

The doctor first couldn't believe it was a stress fracture as nothing showed up on xrays, and as my white blood cells count being bad, they thought of a joint infection. I went through a week of daily injection of antibiotics in the muscle and that was really painful.

Since it wasn't getting better, they made me do a MRI and that's when they saw the stress fracture. The two different doctors that I saw first told me that I needed to be cautious, but being only 25yrs old the crutches weren't necessary.
I was limping constantly and was taking Tramadol as pain killer.

The pain was just getting worse and worse, so the doctor told me about the surgery and I refused it. I have been more careful since, still not using crutches though ( I am working in a lab and need both of my hands).

The pain finally start to go away, and the limping is almost gone. I really hope I can run soon as I really do miss it.

Good luck to everyone of you...

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your experiences. I am 46-yr old male. Suffered a femoral neck fracture while running a half-marathon during training for full marathon. Guess I ramped up the mileage too fast. Went to the doctor 2 days later and nothing showed on x-ray. So, I thought I had strained some muscles and ligaments. Went on for another month in severe pain, not really getting better. Was also doing physical therapy. Finally, one day I went to step up on a high step and felt an explosion of pain and huge pop. Had an MRI two days later that showed the femoral neck was broken. At that point, percutaneous pinning is considered a medical emergency. So, had the surgery 2 days later. Pain went down 90% within 3 days. It's been one week, post-op, and still have some stiffness and soreness.

For those that have a confirmed stress fracture, but the bone has not completely broken and separated, my experience and advice is to get the surgery. I did a lot of research and the medical recommendation is to do the pinning. The problem of not doing it is that the stress fracture will not heal unless you basically lie in bed for 3 months. So, there is a high risk you will break the bone eventually. The problem with not healing the fracture and/or breaking the bone is that you may suffer avascular necrosis, where the blood flow to the femoral head is interrupted, causing the head to die, requiring a complete hip replacement. Yuck!  All of which could've been prevented by the screws, which is a simple procedure.

Hi. I was fell at the floor and it cause my femoral neck to fractured (nondisplaced). The doctor told me to undergo pinning but i am so afraid of the operation. I ask him if there is any alternatives, he told me i should be on total bed rest for 1 month. I am so tired of bed rest and i got a bed sore at my fractured bones. i just want to ask if i can sit even for a while or use crutches? i fell that my fractured foot gets swollen due to non movement.

Hi there,

So Im an openly admitted running addict that has been averaging about 30 miles a week for the last few months but has been running for years.

Anyway, I had some hip pain about a week ago on Tuesday Oct 19th or something. On Saturday I went to an orthopedic who said I probably just had a strain and take it easy. Well I then decided to run my normal rout on Monday which resulted in crippling pain all along my left hip and thigh.

On Tuesday morning (Oct 22), I went to a different orthopedics being that he was the only one that could get me in right away.

After a 2 second exam and a couple X-rays he informed me I had a significant femoral neck stress fracture that would require immediate surgery. Opting out the surgery would present a 50% risk of loosing my hip and almost grantee a total hip replacement before my 24th birthday.

Feeling I had no real choice, I had the surgery that night. They inserted three screws into my femur and stabled me up.

They say the surgery went well and the screws went in tight. I have to admit the pain is like 75% better than before the surgery and while the muscles feel tight its not the sharp pain from the bone.

However, my greatest fear is that they are saying I will need to be on crutches for 6 whole weeks before I can just walk normally on it. I am devastated by this news and am in total shock. Taking away my running is one thing but taking away my ability to walk is like death. I honestly don't think I can do it.

Please, has anyone been in a similar situation and found that while it may have taken 6 weeks to be fully mobile again they were able to ditch the crutches and maintain an exercise free existence for a while. I just need to be able to walk around the house or to the grocery store. I know I will not make it 6 months with these things

Hi! I think this recovery will take a while...I found out I have a FNSF 4 weeks ago and have been NWB since...yesterday my doc said he doesn't think it's healing and I have to go for a surgical consult after all. I have been NWB religiously which is pretty difficult since I am working full time in physical therapy. I'm so glad when I went to him he immediately ordered an MRI, then showed it to me and told me this is the worst he's ever seen...he said that if I had went to my regular doc I would have broken it totally off as they always start with a muscle strain DX...strange thing is that I only had severe pain, 7-8/10 for about 2-3 days then it went back to about a 3/10 until I called the doc 7 days in, got an appt for 7 days later, all the while I only had low grade pain. After 4 weeks NWB it's no better, still a 3/10...he said the pain should be gone, so now I have to go for a surgery consult. No matter how loving it takes, it sure is better than a hip replacement!

And the doc said on the outset I would have to be NWB for 8 weeks and then progress to PWB and so on. So I will likely be on crutches for 12 weeks. He said it is fractured about 50% and I could try conservative first, but will likely need surgery... So now 4 weeks later after trying conservative I'm back to getting that surgical consult. Whatever and however long it takes, it is worth it to give the full time to heal and not cheat. I've heard stories of unhappy endings from people who disregarded the Docs instructions.

I just suffered from a femoral neck stress fracture from OCS too (June 2016). It's taken 4+ months for them to process my paperwork. How long did it take you?

Hi! I identify with your post so well. I am struggling horribly. I am 2.5 weeks post diagnosis/ using crutches. I have a terrible limp but not really any pain.
Did your limp eventually subside?
How are you now? Any tips?

Thank you!
