I'm 20, female.
I've had gas issues for about 2 years now, varying from minimal/inobtrusive to my daily life to loud, socially limiting, and affecting what I do (I'm a student at university and sitting in a quiet exam hall for 2-3hrs to write finals was more stressful due to gas issues than to the material I was being tested on).
It's escalated in the past 5-6 months to entirely disrupting my life. I hate sleeping in the same room as other people because I invariably pass gas a lot when I wake up. It's also affected my sex life. New in the past 6mo are also bouts of diarhhea and gas pains. Also, in the past it was mostly just gas. Now it's burping and gas and the feeling/noises of gas moving around in my stomach or intestines (abdomen).
I became vegetarian about 2-3 years ago. I attributed the initial gas to a change in fibre levels, and gave my body a 'grace period' to become accustomed to it. 2 years later, I'm past that period and wondering what on earth is going on.
I have kept a food diary and ruled out any food allergies or intolerances to the best of my ability. I already minimize my dairy consumption (I only occasionally eat cheese, not really any dairy elsewhere in my diet). I suspect IBS but as it is not a cause but a set of symptoms I'm hesitant to call it that. I also suspect that whatever is going on in my body is stress-aggravated (if not stress-caused), due to it manifesting itself mostly during the school year and not having any memories of it over summer months. I'm also not sure if a good chunk of it is me swallowing air as I eat - but wouldn't I burp that back up, and that's that? The volume of gas alone in my digestive tract seems to me to be pointing elsewhere.
Does this sound like IBS? I've cut out caffeine from my diet and already avoid meat and most dairy. I've cut down on alcohol and will continue to do so (so hard for a university student though!)... also I'll limit high-fat foods and try to just generally eat healthier. I've already tried this strategy to varying degrees.
I've also used Beano, Gas-X, Iberogast... really any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all xxxxxx
