So I experience I guess you could call it a 'buzzing' at the onset, however from there it feels and hears almost like a little lighting bolt just shot across my brain. It never makes me lose balance or throws me back, but it feels like it and in my head it is extremely loud. I was starting to think I was crazy also. I think the synapse are just for some reason or another, be it; diet, prescriptions, elicit drugs, or whatever, forces a misfire per say. Some of us are just a little more lucky then others and get to experience it a whole new light.

I doubt it is a spiritual thing guys & gals. I have researched too after having this and my partner had it 2 years ago when he had a cortisone injection in his upper spine. He's sure they hit a nerve. I have had severe neck & shoulder pain for many years and recently it is very stiff & sore.
I read that it is from a nerve being pinched in your neck / spine...hence the fact it comes in a wave and only last a short time. Sometimes it can repeat over & over in a 15 min period but there's always a stop & start between each one. Mine feels like an electric current that rolls in over the top of my brain from back to front. It can stop me in my tracks!!

It sounds like there are at least 3 different situations being described in this thread (I didn't read them all). Two I'm familiar with, and have confirmed these with my own neurologist and psychiatrist, respectively. I probably won't remember to check back here for responses, so I'll also give you some keywords in case you have further questions and need a direction to look.

1) If it's happening while you're in the process of falling asleep, working its way from the feet all the way up to the head, that's normal(ish). In simplistic terms, your brain is getting your body ready for sleep. Most people, most of the time, are already "out" before this starts happening. But, sometimes not. It could be a sign of a sleep disorder -- narcolepsy, for sure. Some people try to do it intentionally, as it can lead you to a lucid dreaming state. For more info, search [narcolepsy] or [sleep paralysis] or [lucid dreaming]. See a sleep specialist if you suspect narcolepsy.

2) The other one I know about is where you get the 1-2 second shocks in the brain and eyes. They can be infrequent or every minute. These are commonly called "brain zaps," for obvious reasons. They are often a side effect of a medicine you're taking or tapering off of. Cymbalta and Viibryd are two I've heard of, but there are likely others. If you skipped doses, get back on track and see if it goes away. If the medicine is causing it, talk to your doctor about adjusting or changing meds. I don't know if this is a harmful effect that NEEDS to be corrected, but at least have the conversation to weigh the zaps against changing meds. Plus, your doctor may not know it's a side effect unless someone else told them about it, so it's good to share the information for everyone's benefit (as I'm attempting to do here). To see if others are reporting it for your meds, search [brain zaps + (medicine name)].

Those are the only situations I can help shed light on, unfortunately. Best of luck to everyone.

I just posted about your situation (tingling when falling asleep) but forgot to mention the "loud" bang noise. See the previous post, #1. When I experience this, I get the loud bang as the tingling passes over my ears, as well. Part of the sleep process, not a stroke. Totally normal, except that you should be asleep before it happens. Never be afraid to talk to your doctor. :-)

Actually, it is also a neurological side effect from certain psych meds. In fact, this is the first place I have found that people who are not mentioning psych meds are mentioning the buzz. I have never been on psych meds and have been assured it is not a TIA, stroke or seizure. For me it is simply an odd sensation that lasts less than 2 minutes, has not occurred more than once a day and while it does make me feel unsettled and a little woozy, it does not last. I have noticed that everytime it has happened, I have either been out in the sunlight, or my eyes are exposed to sunlight while indoors. And the few doctors who are willing to acknowledge that is not all in one's head call it "brain buzz". To me it feels like a light electrical hum or a hive of happy bees.

Hec yes! They're called brain zaps and I've still got mine 5 years past the last time I took Effexor XR 150. That c**p is poison! I wish I could sue the company for breaking my brain.

I get them from withdrawls of my anti depressant. It started when I tried to wean myself off.Told the Doctor about it and he had no clue what I was talking about. It is like a surge of electricity that goes in and back out in a continuous motion, very quickly Its at the top of my head and around my eyes.
I feel like they are making me crazy.I am very anxious, irritable, dizzy at times and off balance. I want them gone.

OK, i dont wanna be the person who solved a problem and didnt come back and tell how they did it anyway....hey, i dont know if this is exactly what i experienced but when i was falling asleep i was getting static in my head really bad and i couldn't sleep. plus i was really sensitive to time and weather changes making me moody. so i took some fish oil and i was wayyy to sensitive to it. messed with my hormones REALLY bad. stopped my period even, among other things. but this problem completely went away and actually i slept really well the last few nights since i stopped taking the fish oil, i took it for almost 2 months. anyway. it's supposed to be good for your cardiovascular, and nervous system so in my opinion it healed whatever was wrong with me BECAUSE i was sensitive to it. i'm sensitive to all medications, and lots of supplements too. i also lost a a lot weight. i really didn't megadose on it or anything i just took a normal amount. i think the reason why this happened is because i was sensitive to medication i took before and it damaged my body. anyway, if you wanna take the fish oil watch out because it can cause prostate cancer, balding, and who knows what else. you need to get good quality fish oil too because ive took some that does nothing!

oh another weird thing that happened while on it was i was freezing for like a week! i think it's a problem with my hypothalamus from what i've read and i've also seen an article that says fish oil heals hypothalamus damage. anyway i feel better than i have since last summer. ok if i start feeling different i will try to remember to update again.

a little scared to post this since i dont really recommend megadosing on fish oil, because even i didn't do that. i would just try to take a little bit at a time and work your way up. i mean it might take longer to heal. my problem was almost gone in a week. i head really bad neuropathy in my feet and couldn't eat sugar. now i can eat anything! and my feet dont bother me at all. no pins and needles anymore.

I have also had this many times in my life. though it has been some years scince the last time i think.

when i was little i had this all the time aswell as out of body experiences. i basically floated out of my body and looked at myself all the time as i was a sleeping shape in the bed or chair or wherever i was sleeping at the time.

and i just had this again last night.

This extremely loud electric type pulse in my brain...what is this thought?
I am on anti-depressants now, but only been on them for a year now, but i had this many times before i started taking medication...

it's so strange no? I have not talked to my doctor or my psychologist regarding this, mostly because it is so odd and difficult to explain and i am afraid that it will lead me to having to do a bunch of standard tests, like mri and stuff...i don't know.

:D

So I don't want to give anyone false hope. Maybe it only worked for me. But I had this "buzz" thing, too, for a few months (especially when falling asleep or while sleeping. It would literally wake me with a snap out of deep sleep, going across my brain like a zap). I had a naturopath cure me entirely of this by having me take a homeopathic remedy called aconite (also known as aconitum nappellus). I literally just picked up a tiny blue vial of homeopathic pills at Whole Foods, then put one under my tongue to melt (ten minutes away from food, gum, or water in my mouth) once a day. (Usually before bed.) The brain surges went away entirely. I hope this maybe even helps one of you?
