Just an update: I'm the one who posted several months ago about my problem starting in 2006 while frying zucchini (weird, I know, but I remember it so clearly because it was pretty disturbing). Well, I had sinus surgery in August of this year (2012). Immediately I could tell a big difference. The smell was still there occasionally while I was healing, but it was not nearly as pronounced. Now that most of the swelling and trauma from the surgery are completely gone, the smell only shows up maybe once every six weeks, and only after I've had dairy (which I do have an allergy to--I never determined whether that was a contributing factor prior to the surgery) or other foods known to promote mucus. Coffee and chocolate still taste a little weird very occasionally but only in the evening. The other major plus is that I have only had one sinus infection since the surgery, and my energy level and immune system both seem to be improving vastly (I was beginning to think that I had chronic fatigue syndrome, but that is no longer a consideration. I still get tired, but I work part time and have two small children. I'm supposed to be mommy tired sometimes. It's no longer I-can't-get-out-of-bed tired). Bottom line: if you are even considering sinus surgery and are a good candidate for it according to your ENT, go for it.

i was going crazy with this smell and taste. ct scan and mri all clear. this last ent told me i had olfactory nerve damage. makes sense. takes 6months to one year to heal. sometimes it doesn't. i almost wept just to have a diagnosis. it could be what is happeneing and best thing is patience. thats what he told me. i am definitely healing so i'll keep you informed. ask your doc. good luck to you.

Ahhh, haha! i am 18 and i had this problem for a few years, (it don't happen often) but when i drink 4-6 cups with coffee my nose can smell like burn coffee from 20 minutes to 3 hours, and it really is annoying, however it usually goes away when i either eating something or using DOC. Food don't tastes gross for me though.

Shampoo and toothpaste smell too sweet. When I go into a restaurant it smells really greasy. Some chemicals like paint thinner smell totally different. I went to ent, got ct scan nothing showed up.I has a bad cold 9 months ago. Would the taste disorder show up a couple months after I had the cold?

I have the exact same thing but only in the right nostril and I remember exactly what I was doing when it first happened. I was at work and was chewing a piece of bubble gum, I blew a bubble with the gum and popped it in my mouth - instant disgusting taste and smell!!!!!! That was 22 years ago! Back then it only occurred rarely. Now it's at least 10-15 times a month, sometimes each event lasts for days!!! Sometimes I just want to cry because it ruins my whole day, this smell/taste is absolutely horrid! The only thing that makes it go away (and not every time and often not for long) is laying on that side and making my eyes water so that nostril plugs up. This is ridiculous and not one doctor can tell me what it is. I'm about at my wits end so If anyone has any new information - please post!!!

I have the same problem and have had it for about 30 years. The NeilMed sinus rinse has been a godsend and takes it away every time. Sometimes I only need to rinse once but some days I need to use it up to 3 times to get rid of the horrid taste/smell. Prior to discovering the sinus rinse the only way I was able to get rid of it was to cry! Silly but true.

The smell you are sensing is blood in your mucus membranes. Keep your sinuses irrigated and moist. It should help.

I workup this morning with a strong coffee smell in my nostrails and was clueless where this smell was coming from because I or my husband do not take coffee. I was searching the room like crazy to find that smell but found nothing, after which I noticed that my sinus was distrubed and I had to wash/ blow my nostrails. Before I knew it, the smell faded and I was left clueless. So I was curious to know what happened and googled, I came acorss this article and found it helpful. I hope this does not happen again cause its awefully sick. will post later if it happens again.
