I am 19 too and experience this as well. It does not matter if i have two shots or have 9 shots i experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, horrible stomach cramping. Have you found any reasons for your symptoms? I read all these other posts and I am a vegan so i can rule out dairy as a source.

I'm a 28 year old female, and probably for the past 3 years or so I can't seem to tolerate alcohol. I'm only about 105 pounds but in my early 20's I could drink without getting sick. It's the weirdest thing, I've noticed especially with Red wine. I can have 1 or 2 glasses in the evening. I go to sleep wake up an hour or so later with extreme nausea, sweating, and heart racing, sometimes abdominal cramping and before I know it I'm spending my evening or sometimes the wee morning hours puking, sometimes diarrhea accompanies it as well. I never know what alcoholic drink will do it to me. I'm noticing though every time I drink alcohol I end up nauseous.  It's 2:40 am and around 7:30pm I started drinking white wine. I had a total amount of 3 glasses. Around 12am I became very nauseous I've taken some pepto bismol twice. I haven't puked this evening so that's good. But usually I do end up puking 4 - 5 hours after drinking alcohol. Luckily the pepto seems to be helping, I'm only mildly nauseous. But, I have been researching since I've been up tonight, and there is something called alcohol intolerance. According to the Mayo Clinic Alcohol intolerance is caused by a genetic condition in which the body is unable to break down alcohol. The only way to prevent alcohol intolerance is to avoid alcohol altogether. Now I do have lactose intolerance so I guess it's possible that I could have this as well. Also I believe that this is something that can develop gradually like an allergy, which is why in my early 20's I could tolerate alcohol but now in my late 20's not so much. I think will just have to unfortunately cut back on my alcohol consumption and those of you out there that have even more severe effects than I do when drinking alcohol I would just avoid it all together. Obviously our bodies can't seem to metabolize or breakdown the enzyme in alcohol. I think I have a mild case of alcohol intolerance but I've been reading some of these posts and some of you are even worse than me. If your body can't handle it, DON'T DO IT!  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

Hi firecox and others, I am a 48 yo female and when I was young had high alcohol tolerance and rarely had any problems the day after a binge. Now I usually drink moderately, but have the same problem as described here. Sometimes I have as little as a glass + half of wine and am up in the bathroom overnight repeatedly, with feeling cold and shivery, nausea and diarrhoea. Other times I can drink 4 glasses and no side effects. Like some others here, I recently discovered that I'm lactose intolerant and now have just butter and a little hard cheese, but stay off other dairy. As you all describe, the reaction is out of all proportion to the amount of alcohol drunk and often happens when I've not felt more than very mildly merry. Having read all of your stories, I'm beginning to think that I should write a food diary of what I ate and how much + what I drank to see if I can identify what triggers it - am I intolerant to something else? I am suspecting that if I drink actually at the same time as eating, it seems to prevent the problem, and conversely, if I drink before or after the meal it causes the syndrome described. So maybe it's worth recording timing relative to meal too! All this, just to have a couple of drinks!

It would be nice to know the cause of this. It seems rare, but obviously afflicts certain people.

hi,i'm having similar problems not actually being sick but feeling as though i might be,my nerves seem to be on end, i suffer from restless leg syndrome which normally happens when i try and sleep but after alcohol my legs are going like a steam train while im still up and i spend most of the night pacing up and down just to stop my legs from going into involuntary spasms,i do get the stomach cramps and occasionally upset stomach, again its only after a couple of beers, when i was younger(im now a 57 yr old) (male)i used to drink a fair bit and fall asleep afterwards but now it just seems to make me feel awful and almost hyper, whether this is similar to what other people are suffering im unsure but would be grateful for any advice

I have had some of the same reactions you all have experienced except for a few things. I am in college and of course drinking is a little different at my age than with many of you but I am still safe about it. I will have a few shots no more than 5-6 and I will be fine for a few hours. At this time is when most people start to sober up. I just get drunker and blackout even though I stopped drinking hours before this. I never have the feeling of throwing up either but I always start shaking and get very cold. Also, I have always gotten rashes on my chest even before this started to happen. I do know of gluten intolerance running through my family but I have had both gluten and gluten-free alcohol and the reactions are the same. It has just started to happen within the past two months and I feel like something is just not right.

This makes total sense. I am 46 , and can drink a lot og alchohol and nothing, not even a real hangover. I have three drinks , one of which was a gret gladd of Red Wine. For Dinne I had a Fish Poke. I was fine went home and then got violently ill. I even thought someone had spiked my drink. I felt like it was either food poisoning, a spike drink, the flu, or an extrme allergic reation. I think it is probably the red wine. I read about the levels of metal and There are high levels of metal in Red wine. One Doctor even said there are things like lead. Metls that can not get out of our bodies. If that is the case we have residuals that are left over, and the morewine we drink he felt there could defintely be a higher sensitivity, and especially when combined with Seafood. It has happened to me three times so far, and it is exaclty as one person described above. SLeep, thrown into violent vomitting, and Diarreah. And SPlitting headache, chills, and panting. I have had panic attacks. This isnothing like that. I end up laying on the floor panting like a dog to breath. Hot then cold, and can stop the pain in my hea with anything but ice packs. Then sleep. Saltines and Seven up. It is awful. So I personally am done with wine. It has happened to me with white and Red. I also had a similar reaction drandonly with Vodka. Just have to listen to our bodies. Obviousl if the body reacts like that. Whatever we did. It doesn't like that. But It is helpful to me to see I am not alone. Because I was afraid I had a Brain tumor. That's how bad it felt.

I was just looking up bad reactions to alchohol and the fever, cramping, nausea after consuming alchohol can be an intolerance or a sign of pancreatisis, gall bladder problems, or hodgkins lymphoma (?)....  that may not be correct, but it is worth mentioning to your doctor or look it up online...  the intolerance to alchohol can be a sign of an underlying condition that needs to be treated.
