Hello everyone, I'm 36 and I have type 2 for one year now. I just got my HbA1c back and I got a 9. Can anyone tell me if this is that bad? I'm still a newby at this point and still trying to understand how all this works. I was thinking that my doctor told me I should shoot for somewhere between 6 and 7 but at at seven I would be good for now. How bad is 9. My first test was at 8.8 and that got me diagnosed. Does anyone have an advice for me. Anything would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, There are a lot of people over 9 for many reasons no matter how long they have been diagnosed. But, overly, 9 is high. And, yes you should try to reach somewhere between 6 and 7. An HbA1c of 6 is considered normal for nondiabetics so that may be unreasonable for a diabetic so the medical community sets the number at 7 because that seems to be a realistic goal. I don't know if you are taking any meds and what kind nor do I know what your diet and exercise regime looks like and that is important. Make sure you take BG levels often and consistently. I suggest if you are over weight, lose some weight because being over weight increases insulin resistance whether you take insulin or not. Try keeping your carb intake below 100 grams/daily and that should help you a lot. Try to get your BG stabilized as soon as possible to prevent further medical complications. Come back and visit the forum often and share with us what your diet is like, exercise and any meds your are taking and that will allow us to respond to you better. Make sure you list any supplements you are taking as well. I wish you the best.
