Hello everyone, I was diagnosed in Feb with type 1. My 1st HBA!C result came back – help? My score was 10.7. Is this bad or okay or what. I'm already on a new diet and I exercise regularly but I'm to understand that as a type 1 I'm not producing insulin. How could that be. I'm currently in my twenties. I thought type 1 happened when you were a child. Have I been diabetic all this time and not known it? I just don't understand this. I go to the doctor every year for my annual checkup. I would have thought they would have caught something like this. Anyway, is a score of 10.7 okay sort of? Thanks.

Hello, I'm a type 1 as well and I didn't know until I was in my late twenties. I went to the doctor on a regular basis (yearly) and they didn't catch it. I don't think all doctors do a HBA1C test on all patients or they only do then once in a while and I'm not sure why that is. However, the HbA1c test is a measure of BG levels over a 2 to 3 month period to see how BG levels are. I don't think it has always been used as a diagnostic tool. That may be a more recent decision. I was diagnosed over 40 years ago and I don't think it was standard then. I was tested because I had symptoms. Anyway, a 6 would be considered normal and when you get to 7 you would probably be diagnosed as diabetic. So, I think 7 would the number. Since you tested at 10.7 you are way up there and definitely diabetic and have been for some time. So, from this point on you need to bring your BG levels down somewhere between 6 and 7 to have good levels. My first HBA1C level was 9.6 but I was able to get it down to 6.5 within two years. I'm sure you'll have no problem doing that with the proper diet and exercise. I wish the best for you.
