I am 26 i have no children and have been getting hives ever since I started puberty I remember they would start and I didn't know what was happening my mum took me to many doctors they made me go to allergy testing do a food diary nothing would come up. You book to see another specialist and by the time you get to your appointment the hives have cleared up :( my mum came to the conclusion it was to do with my period because as a teen ager I would become very moody and get hives just befor I got it! As I have grown up it has become worse I was on the pill for years and if I skipped a period on there I would pay for it in hives i would wake Up in the morning and all my body would be covered I would take a telfast 180 and steraoid table 5mg and they would clear up with in a couple of hours but if I stressed over it it would make it worse expessasly if people would be like omg what is that rash! I know it sounds extreme but it feels like I have hot lava boiling under my skin! Lately my I have still been getting my hives after my period and I still feel emotional and grumpy like when I have my period does anyone have any answers or have a similar case?

I too get hives/rashes around my period and have also had elevated thyroid antibodies (569). My TSH is totally fine (1.9) so my thyroid is functioning properly. Did they check your ANA? Mine was positive (1:160) with a speckled pattern, and my allergist thinks that it is insignificant. I am anxious for my appointment with the Endocrinologist in a month. It sure does seem to be hormone related, but it would be nice to know for sure.

I am 46 yrs old and have had hives and extremity swelling around my period for the past 3 yrs.  I have had every allergy test their is and 3 biopsys to figure out why.  One biopsy was returned as a positive for a rare auto immune disease called Wells Syndrome or eosonophyllic cellulitis.  They do not know what causes it or how to get rid of it and they say I am one of 80 diagnosis.  Treatment is hormones but I'd rather just deal with the hives, itching, swelling, sores, and scarring.  I think the diagnosis was wrong and I am allergic to my period and anything that causes swelling like hard work:)

I was 38 when my hives started last August. Originally they were on my arms and chest - only where I did not have clothes on. High doses of Prednisone would make them go away, but as soon as I would stop they would be back worse than ever. Have been through allergy testing (also told I have dermographism), worked with dermatologist, been tested for everything, and even had a swollen lymph node from my neck removed. Everybody says it must be a lupus like auto-immune disease but I do not test positive for that. Currently I take Methotrexate weekly and a very small dose of Prednisone every other day. This got the hives under control to where I was then able to see that they do flare and get much worse right before my period. So now the doctor put me on Spironolactone. He said it is actually a blood pressure medicine, but it works to control hormones. Today my period started, and I do not have huge hives. This is now the first time in 9 months. I go to the Rhematologist (sp?) the first of May so I will be curious what he says. I have never taken meds so I am anxious to get off of everything that I don't need. I am not hive free, but this is bareable at least.

I, like the rest of you, am so very happy to have found this thread. I am 37 and have been getting hives for about two months now. I had a bout with them six years ago, went to doctors who just provided steroids and histamines, and then they just went away...bizarre. Now, all these years later, they just show up. I went to the er to see what was wrong, worried about my throat closing up, and they did the steroid/histamine thing. Went to my regular doctor, same thing. Was on prednisone and antibiotics for two weeks (for a "sinus infection" thought to have caused the hives) and ended up with a YEAST INFECTION in my THROAT! That was super fun...lol. Well, I changed EVERYTHING about my daily routine...foods, soaps, COFFEE!! (my passion in life) and they subside for about a week or two and I had a severe break out two days ago, so severe I had to go to the hospital AGAIN, and that morning after I got home...I started my period!!! Going to an allergist next week and will definitely ask about the hormone thing...
Thank you so much everyone, I am so happy I am not alone!!!

I have been experiencing hives since childhood. My new allergist has given me control with amitriptilene and singulair at night and allegra during the day. He describes this as blockade treatment. If I don't get much control from it he will give me something to weaken my immune system because my hives are autoimmune related. I also used to have swollen lips. This is VERY dangerous because it signals the swelling that can occur in the airway, which kills thousands of people annually.

Perhaps the only thing more frustrating than chronic hives is having your daughter suffer with the condition rather than yourself!  There does seem to be a correlation between periods and hives and I'm encouraged to try that avenue next.  For 10 months we have seen countless doctors, massage therapists and acupuncturists with no resolution.  All we can do is keep trying, praying and scratching.
SO sorry for anyone who must endure this!

Wow, I can't believe I found this! I too have been going through this for the past few years, (I'm 38 now)... I take about half of the things that are recommended. I'm not the type that can load up on all that stuff all the time, so I just deal. Cold showers and allergy meds kind of help. But its still a pain in the A**. Mine usually starts on my neck and works its way down my chest and onto my face. Its a part of my PMS, (though it does occasionally hit at other times).

Thank you so much for the tips!!

Wow, I hate that you have to go through all of this! I confess to not being able to read the entire thread but did you happen to pick up any tricks along the way yourself, or did this thread pretty much cover everything?

I have had hives for nearly 10 years. It all started when I was pregnant. My doctor told me that once I had my chi,d they would go away. Well, not so. Every month prior to my period, I break out in hives on my legs and around my ankle. The last two months, it has been chronic on my legs and now on my arms. I like so many got tested for allergies, and had a few milk, dog, barley and house dust. I have been taking zyrtec and a nasal spray. They have helped with some of my other symptoms but not my hives. I brought this up to many doctors, their response is hum. So, I am returning to my allergist, who is familiar with hormone related hives and talking options. I am thinking I need a hormone balance cream, but am nervous about trying it. My mom passed away from breast cancer. We will see.

48 years old.  One year completely hive free (both welts and "Hitch ate seafood facial swelling").

I use the Natural Progesterone Cream and it has done the trick.

Just wanted to report back that this was the solution for me and I had all the allergy tests, doctor tests....hypnosis....you name it, I tried everything.

This was a miracle cure for me!

Hi!  I am 41 years old and just started getting hives about a year ago.  I've seen my doctor a number of times and she couldn't figure out the problem.  I was allergy tested and found nothing.  I finally figured it out a few months ago.  They start just before my period.  I have an IUD so I do not get a period on a consistent basis.  But when I do, the hives show up.  I am so glad to find out I am not alone!  I have not found anything yet that makes them go away quickly, but Benadryl at least makes the itching stop.  I am going to try the Natural Progesterone Cream and will report back on how it works.  Thank you to all of you who posted about this.

The progesterone cream worked great for me! After the first eight days on the cream, I have been hive free for about 15 months straight!

Until they go away, an allergist recommended Alpha Keri Bath and Shower oil in a lukewarm bath to me. This stopped the horrible itching for me.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

Praying you get some relief. I had mine for about 2 years before I found my cure. Take care and God Bless.

If you have an allergist, you might want to check with that doctor first. I had the same symptoms, and my allergist diagnosed me with progesterone sensitivity: I was reacting to the artificial hormones in my IUD. Once the IUD was removed, the hives went away. However, I would not experiment with rubbing my specific allergen onto my skin without consulting a doctor first. I don't know how the dose in the cream compares to the dose in the IUD, but I would worry about escalating a case of hives into full-on anaphlyaxis (in my case there was also facial swelling so anaphylaxis was quite possible). Please be careful!

I too suffer with APD. Ask a dermatologist for an injection of progesterone. I had it done and had an immediate reaction. This can be a debilitating disease. On page one there is a list of vitamins and supplements. At my wits end I thought why not try it. I ordered them from the vitamin shoppe and have been taking them for 4 months. I will get a few hives here and there but they are totally manageable only needing to use Sarna lotion.

My daughter has been experiencing chronic hives, urticaria, for ten months now and are also now considering hormones after trying many doctors and medicines. It's amazing that more research in this area isn't done. Thank you for your posts and encouragement. I will look forward to positive results and posts :)
