I'd say that you want to mix up titration with pattern (habbit) breaking and some healthy 'distraction' a.k.a. positive thinking.

Also increase your metabolism and get your bodies own pumping (exercise, spicy food) and slightly acidify your blood / urine (cranberry juice) and eat lots of fat and water soluble fibre. (Oats are excellent fat soluble fibre and whole bran that kind of thing)

Also, try quitting something else that you like, well for a while.

Breakdown is:

titration, this means reducing the amount you take, peak concentration (so you could split your dose and then take it 3-4 hours apart will give you half the peak for morphine (3 hour half life)), duration (time between peaks) your currently one week, grin and bare the withdrawal for half a day and you'll be one week and half a day, a few weeks later it will be one week and a two days as you get used to it you'll be able to push yourself harder. Trying to lower the peak and push the duration at the same time may make you break!

Also, take less each time, as well as lowering the peak. (flush a tiny bit down the toilet for instance).

This will allow your body to adjust to lesser and lesser highs and lesser and lesser background amounts of the drug, it will also allow the level of metabolites to go down.

Also, if you use at a particular place, or in the morning, or after work, or on a Friday start breaking it up 'a lot', your body has an excellent build in clock and you'll start feeling the urge as your body is anticipating your next dose. Don't let it know when this is going to happen, it it should break the habit and the urge and craving.

Also, get your body used to wanting so other kind of pleasure to replace what your taking away, so that your body and mind get distracted and start craving something else instead. Maybe find a TV programme that's on when you normally dose, or get a movie out and watch that instead. Get a hobby, get a bike (motor or push) and go out and get the adrenaline pumping.

Increasing you metabolism will speed up your fat cycle and help metabolites flush out of your system and fat deposits faster, this may hit you a little bit but in the long run you should recover sooner and have less metabolites in your system.

Also the metabolites are fat soluble, the cranberry juice will make your blood a little more acidic and should in turn turn some of the metabolites into salts which you will pass through water. This should also reduce the background level that will get taken up by the fatty tissue again.

Also fibre helps with this as it help the fat solubles get drawn out of your system, it also increases you metabolism.

Also, try quitting something else that you like, well for a while.

Should be self obvious, but let yourself know you can quite (food isn't a good one as your metabolism may go down, unless you swap chocolate for oats)

Hi folks. I have read all your posts with great interest. I have been on Morphine for 4 years. I had a bad work accident and crushed discs all along my spine. As I lived in a small country town I and had very little other input I accepted my doctor's wisdom when he started me on oxycontin later this was changed to ms contin. After my operation valium was added as was endone. Eventually I ended up taking 120 mgs in the morning and the same at night. Now I have to say that I never experienced a high of any kind. I became very sleepy and had difficulty holding my thoughts, I also was often confused, but never high. Nor did I ever at any time take more than I was prescribed. Still after 4 years I felt I wanted my life back and 4 months ago I started to reduce my dose. I have suffered terrible symptoms right from the first reduction, but they would settle in a week or so. 4 days ago I decided to quit alltogether as I had reached 20 mgs. I have to be honest and say it has been hell and I still feel very sick at time of writing. But...I can not and will not go back. The sacrifices to get here were too big to ever go back again. Yes I know that morphine helps quite well for pain but there always comes a time that it will mess too much with your head and your body and nothing is worth that. For those of you who still have to make the decision I say go cold turkey. I did not and as it tuns out I have been withdrawing for almost 5 months and now at the end it is worse than ever. Tapering is not worth it I do not think. I also feel that if you are serious about getting your life back do not start on an alernative to make you feel better. Withdrawing in turn from Suboxone or Methadone only prolongs the agony. If you can do this you can do anything and be proud of yourselves. I feel very ill but I know that one day it will go and at least I have my head and my thoughts back and that is a great gift I have given to myself. Take care all of you. Hugging you all with great compassion. M

I use Opiates, Opiods, and Morphine recreationally. I have found the best way to do any of these is to know how long and how much you can use before you go through withdrawals you cannot handle. If you use a little of each in intervals i.e. perqocets for 3 days, then morphine for 2 then stop for 1 week then take something else....you will not have bad withdrawals, and the high will be worth it...I am not condoning drugs, but if your gonna use do it in moderation and if you cannot do this then dont use....yes it is possible...remember not to do anything that will take control of your life know your limits....I hate alcohol and I am a recreational user, and I find pain pills are not so bad, I just stay away from the really hard stuff, and never ever shoot up or continue when my life is not in control....

I have been reading all the things I have experienced over the last several years. Wow! So many people going through similar things.

I had a bad car wreck that broke c2-c5 9 years ago. This accident left me with severed nerves on the left side of my body. I have a throbbing that the only thing that gave me a "normal" life was opiod analgesics. I started with oxycontin taking 20 mg pills every 8 hours- not enough. Over a period of time I developed a tolerance and was taking 120mg every 8 hours. Soon I was taking it just to get through the day and pain had nothing to do with it; I was and became addicted.

I did not like having a drug control my life so I quit cold turkey. I was sick for 3 months, throwing up all day long and unable to perform the simplest tasks. Itching wqas huge problem, I wore out a pumis stone removing every singe callous on my body down to exposed nerves. Once I did this the itching finally quit. All during this time the pain was unbearable. I kept hoping life would get better but it never did. Not a single day went by without contemplating suicide and it was not because of depression but because it seemed a logical thing to do. After 1 and a half years of suffering I went back on the oxycontin and life sucked a lot less.

Next I got it my head that if I took something closer to what God put on this Earth it would help with my addiction. My wife and I had a long heart-to-heart and I called and discussed with my doctor the situation. I started taking morphine and I had no compulsion whatsoever to take it to get high. I have been taking 130mg every 8 hrs for about 4 years now. Once again I started to hat be dependent on drugs to get through life. Health issues from taking the drug is shotening my life and now that I have 6 grandchildren I want to live and love them a bit longer than I could if I continue the way I am.

3 weeks ago I made a plan to wean myself off. Such a simple thing you would think. 1st week I got down to 100mg every 8 hours. The 3rd weeK I was down to 30mg every 8 hours. I was amazed that the pain I had experinced while quitting before was not existent. Today was the 3rd day of taking 30mg every 8 hours and I had not been sick and was pain was in control until now.

I woke up today so sick I was once again suicidle. Please note my spiritual belief will not allow me to take my own life so don't worry.

I took 30mg of morphine and still felt like s---t. Took another 30 and hour later and did not feel better. An hout later I took 100mg and I feel better except for feeling like a weak, worthless peice of sh*t because I wimped out.

Do any of all you great loving people out there have something that works? My kids tell me to start smoking weed. Is weed better than morphine? Anybody try it and had success?

Also it would seem every addict in the small community I live in wants my drugs. I have heard so much BS, lies, deceipt, etc... all focused on conning pain medication from me. I am sick of it.

I am thinking about going cold turkey again but I truly believe I almost died the the last time I did it. I am 52 and I have other major health issues that reaaly make the possibilty of dieing real. I want to live and be a productive part of society. I want to watch my grandkids have greatgrandkids.

Please share a success story with me.

I am currently detoxing from MS Contin. Otherwise known as morphine sulfate er. I have been taking 300mg a day for over a year. I'm doing this because I'm sick of the vomiting and constipation, among other stomach problems. I spent 2 weeks bringing myself from 300mg a day to 100mg. Each of my pills are 100mg. I cannot get another script of lower doses because my insurance has ended.

Anyways, I consulted a pain management specialist before i stopped all together because my previous doc (the one who prescribed the morphine in the first place) told me I would have seizures and maybe die without tapering down. I've learned since that this is not true. It is a common misconception though. I'm not gonna lie and make like this is an easy thing. It is complete and total hell and hurts worse than anything I've ever felt. i mean, I have a high pain tolerance and multiple body peircings including genital peircings. They tickle compared to this. I do have a few things that I've discovered that have helped so far.

1) Do not quit cold turkey unless you have pills left. If you don't trust yourself with them then have someone who you trust keep control of them. That brings us to #2.

2) Don't do it alone. I'm not using a group setting or anything. I'm doing this at home. One or two people is enough to help. Just make sure they are someone you trust, care about and cares about you. And if possible, someone who is stronger than you. Much stronger since your strength will increase. At least mine has. Especially when it comes to chills and spasms.

3) Have some fast and heavy music on hand. I find that when i can't stop shaking I can listen to the most angry music I know and the shakes will morph(ine) into the beat to the music. That makes it more bearable and helps distract you.

4) This is why you want the extra strong person. When the pain and/or shakes get real bad (especially at night) it helps to have someone who can kinda spoon you. When they do this they need to wrap their arms around your arms and chest and wrap their legs around yours and keep you pinned. It hurts like hell sometimes but the compression and contact seems to help.

5) Communicate. Talk with you support persons before you do anything. Make sure they understand that you may or may not say some very hurtful things and to not take it to heart. I've done pretty good with this but I have snapped at people several times and break down with uncontrolable crying. Also talk about pain thresholds and when they should give you more meds and how much. Don't be afraid to cut er tabs in half. If you do then it won't stay in your system as long, gives you quicker relief and helps with sleep. Also explain to them about the compression spooning and when to do it. Cause I tell you what, if they do it at the wrong time it's going to piss you off.

6) Be prepared for anything. No matter how much you research or prepare, this is going to be a learning experience for you and your support. And don't be afraid to experiment with SAFE ideas that you think might help.

7) Share, share, share. You never know if what you have to say or have found out will help someone else going through the same thing.

There is over 4 years of discussion about te topic of one of the opiods: morphine. I am shocked at the content of these posts. I am unable to determine whether most of these posters are liars or simply ignorant about medical protocol, biology, physiology, etc.

First there is a huge difference in "dependency and "addiction". If you have a verified medical need for opiates, long term, due to a condition that cannot be treated any other way, such as the people that claim to have "no C-spine discs left", then morphine is a appropriate pallative treatment,

If you are just a common run of the mill drug abuser, that stole the drugs or , worse, purchased them from some id**t patient that thinks they need money mor ethan to be able to function normally, you addicts have no idea the number of people you have harmed,  peoplethat require drugs in this class to function.  Your abuse has made it more difficult to get REAL relief from chronic/acute pain, because doctors are afraid of being accused of suborning drug abuse.

The bottom line is, if you are prescribed morphine for an unfixable medical condition, and you are getting "high" from your dose, you are taking too much .

Your dosage should make you feel "normal" Your "10" plus pain level should go down to 4-6 , NO LOWER, you cannot be totally pain free without getting high. Being "high" is NOT normal, and that should not be your goal. Your goal should be to function as best as your impairment allows you to.

Opioids are a gift to man from nature and have been used for cenbturies to alleviate human suffering. Thanks to drug abusers this gift is now withheld from people that NEED it to survive.

To the idiots that are breaking now MS CONTIN: no doctors prescribed that for you or you would know not to tamper"break" the tablets as it is a slow release tablets. breaking down and MS Contin especially in the does you described would mean death, and you would not be writing in a forum.

I have heard that drug addicts lie constantly, and this forum is sure proof of that.

Thanks to you addicts, noraml responsible people, people that have NEVER used an iilegal drug or misused lega drugs are now forced to take brain chemically altering man created drugs to TRY to relieve pain because doctors are too afraid to prescibe a drug: morphine that has TWO side effects:  constipation and nausea. Instead they have to try drug after drug, that have pages of side effects. You drug addicts have ruined many of life. Lives of people you never met.

YOU cause upright citizens that have fallen off roofs, had car accidents, water skiing accidents etc to have to sign DRUG AGREEMENTS like criminals in order to get treatment.  They are treated with disfain by phramcists that suspiciuously look at EVERYBODY bringing in a prescription for opioids.

There are even phramacists that REFUSE to fill MS Contin prescriptions "on moral principles" How ridiculous.

You addicts have cause so much grief and suffering to people that have done nothing to you. YOU drug addicts have caused the current HYSTERIA in Congress and the Press about opioids, resulting in honest hurting people cannot get relief and have a somewhat normal life, YET you STILL canb get your fix illegally.

To the one liar that claims not to have any discs in your C spine: how do you hold your head up ? since you claim these were destroyed instantly in an accident; you would be in a halo for life in order to hold your head up and not crush you spinal cord. At least read about how the body works before you post such silly claims.

It is NOT true that you can become addicted in a few does of morphine UNLESS you have abused opioids previously. NOR is it true that your body will need more and more in a matter of weeks , unless gain you have been a drug abuser. There are patients on pallative doses of MS Contin that have not had an increase in years.

For those of you that have tried everything, really do have chronic debilitating pain, do not be afraid of MS Contin. The right does taken regularly can never make you high sleepy etc in fact the opposite, the right does will take the veil of pain from your braiun give you your old energy, and you can at least wash the dishes and maybe even mow the grass.  MS Contin is a slow release tablet NEVER to be broken. Your doctor should always start you on the smallest dose such as 15 mg every 8 hours, and see how your pain is managed. If your impairment is from a physical trauma as oopposed to an organic disease, you may want to try a MS  Contin witha cyclobenzaphrine ( Flexeril) dose to manage the secondary muscle pain caused by neuropathy from the trauma.

For the appropriate patient MS Contin is NOT an addiction but a dependency just like a disbetic has a dependency on insulin: they need it to live a normal life.  There is NO reason for a legitimate patient ona correct dosage to endure withdrawal just because YOU "think" morphine is "bad".

Most patients on the right dosage FORGET to take their dose because they feel neither "high" etc they feel normal, and feeling normal makes you forget anything is wrong with you and medicine slips your mind.  That is the sign you are on the right dosage.

Okay, Morphine Sulfate is a b***h.  My Doc started me on 30mg instant release 3 times a day.  After 3 months the pain in my back and legs were unbearable again. ( I had a spinal fusion at the L5-S1 that failed as well as three other failed surgeries to correct.) The Doc put me on Lortab 10/500 4-6 times a day.  Within two weeks my prescription was gone.  I was able to get off the Lortab and started weaning myself off the Morphine.  I started by taking on the first day two 30mg morphine pills split in half and taken every six hours.  The second day I continued the same dosing except I took 30 mg at night before bed.  I did this for three days then went back to 15mg every six hours.  The next day I went with a friend to Pennsylvania, his girl friend was not suppose to go on this trip but there she was, she stole over 400mg of my morphine leaving me to hit the wall.   She was caught and only two pills were recovered.  Now I'm going through the "hell" but I was able to see my old family doctor and came up with a plan to get off of the Morphine during the next two weeks.  I can't stress this enough, if you want off the morphine get medical help.  The physical withdrawals can cause a number of life threatening complications.  I wish everyone the best in beating this b***h but remember once your off you'll always be at high risk for relapse.  Stay strong and good luck.   :$

Hi to you all you folks who take morphene. I just want to let you all know that your stories are scaring the sh*t out of me. I am sitting here now waiting for the phone to ring to let me know a spot is open and a bed is available in a medically supervised DETOX program. I have been taking prescribed morphene got about 13-15 years (cant remember exactly). Currently I am prescribed 200 MG of long lasting MESLON (morphene) twice a day (400 mg total) and 120 mp of morphene sulphate for break through pain every day .....

Sadly, after years of taking the drug at the current prescribed amount, I get absolutely no pain relief even when I take 500mg or even 600mg at 1 time and 120 mg of breakthrough all at 1 time. Currently, i wake up and within 1 hour I am sweating prefusely ..... to the point where my shirt is soaking wet .... and if I am say at work, I must go change. I am waiting for the phone to ring to tell me I can go to DETOX.

I wish I knew how long I would be away from my wife, kids and grands. I wish I knew how long the withdrawl process will take. I know its going to be painful, and brutal but I consider this to be my own fault. I let myself get to this point. I went back month after month after month to my Dr. for another prescription trying to manage my pain. I wonder how long the process is going to take to get the c**p out of my system and get me back to living a normal life.

im going to give you a list of things that have helped relieve almost all my symptoms,

cannabis
clonazepam
pepto bismol
infinite fluids
protein weight loss shakes

the cannabis completely takes care of the nausea, and also dulls the aches and pains in your muscles. the clonazepam can be easily obtained by going to the doctor and telling them you have severe anxiety and need something to control it every now and then. this will help with the pain, and the jonesing, if you happen to have that particular problem. pepto is selfexplanatory, as well as the fluids to keep you hydrated. the weight loss shakes have tons of vitamins and minerals that youre probably excreting every five seconds, so thatms important to control.

other than that, try to distract yourself. get absorbed in a movie, show, video game, or book. if youre not thinking about the pain, it wont be bothering you.

you want an excuse to smoke?

if you are actually under a doctors care, and your dosage makes you feel anything but normal, your dosage is too high. if you are a run of the mill addict getting your morphine illegally, you need expert rehab treatment, not a question or answer from a website

I have been ob MS Contin for years due to a blunt force trauma from a fall from a building.

I have no and I mean NO problems from MS contin. It is a SLOW Release , NOT for "breakthrough" pain as one id**t stated. ( do you people even research these drugs on reliable websites such as Mayo Clinic, before you show your ignorance?)

The ONLY side effect LISTED by any reliable source is Constipation. And that is easily controlled by diet for most people.

Someone above said they were on 300mg a DOSE. Unless the are a terminal cancer patient, that is WAY too high of a dose.

I do not understand what you mean by a "normal life"? If you have a medical necessity , with "pain" ( from what?) you will never have a normal life. What is your goal? Are you trying to say your dosages were mismanaged, and you are getting no relief from your meds? what does your doctor say about that? why didnt you include your doctors consult? why are you trying to stop ?

I do not understand exactly what your problem is and why you want to stop your meds? what alternatives do you have?

Why is this your "own fault"? You sound more like a recreational user than a patient, which are you? Did your doctor decide you needed a detox program? why? what program is your doctor proposing after "detox"?

i answered you in your other post. if you are having night sweats, your dosages need adjusting, you are not spreading your dosages correctly. what does your doctor say about this?

your dosage is too high and spread too far apart. If I were you I would consult my dr, and try for a goal by reducing your morphine for a week or so, and then getting a MS Contin program in which you take around 60mg every 6 hours. Any Dr familiar with morphine understands what I am talking about. Your Mu receptors have to be re-trained by easing your dosage down, so you can re-start and your brain will once again respond to a low, but continuous dose of MS Contin.

Also try Flexeril about 10 mg with your 60 mg does after you get readjusted.

it would be helpful if you posted exactly what your medical issue is.

Morphine does not"mess with your head". Check any reliable source, in fact, morphine is KNOWN to sharpen your thoughts NOT make you fuzzy or unable to concentrate ( That is why Conan Doyle has the ficticious Sherlock Homes using morphine)

The VALIUM is probably the culprit. Valium and that family of drugs actually causes amnesia, that is what it is supposed to do. Valium is NOT a natural drug, and should be avoided if at all possible.

you say you took "120" twice a day, 120 of what? MS Contin?

Morphine should have given you your life back not the other way around.

what else are you taking along with the Morphine. Did you tell your dr your problems with the drugs? S/he should have advised you it was NOT the morphine causing the problems.

You say

"crushed discs", so, did you have fusions? how can you walk if your discs are "crushed" " all along your spine"? exactly which discs are "crushed"? did you have any surgery? MRI's? Did you see a "big city" neurologists? It would be helpful if you had posted an accurate medical history. You should also research "morphine" before you decided ( instead of your DR.) to cease morphione. What alternative pain relief are you planning?
