This has always confused me!! So, Some say virginity is lost when a woman has sexual intercourse, other say it is the rupturing of the hymen.

There is obviously a relation between the two, but then I seem to encounter people who have had sex but still consider themselves a virgin because they have not experienced any bleeding! I don't understand this, because some women have very resiliant hymens and don't bleed when they have been having sex for years, other women are born without hymens, are they deemed unable to loose their virginity?

When I look at the dictionary I find these definitions:

1 someone who has never had sex:
2 (HUMOROUS) a person with no experience of a particular activity
3 [before noun] never having had sex:
4 [usually before noun] LITERARY pure and not spoilt, especially when describing something white:"a virgin sheet of paper" (= one not written on)

if virginity is defined as sexual innoncence, how can a woman have all the sex she wants and still be "pure"? because her hymen hasn't been ruptured?

what do you gals and guys think about the subject, what is virginity to you?

NOTE: Please respect cultural differences and teachings, I am just asking for your thoughts!
I dont want to start any arguments! Please accept your opinions over the question yours alone, and respect others opinions!
I am not saying either definition is wrong, but what is the general thoughts over the subject?

I would define virginity as a woman who has never been penetrated (intercourse).
Doing everything else doesn't take away someone's virginity.

just my opinion :-)

good subject. :-)

I believe that the loss of virginity happens during CONSENTUAL sexual intercourse.

Technically you are no longer a virgin if a penis has penetrated your vagina.

  1. So what is the background to your question?
  2. How old are you, and where do you come from (country/state/county)?
  3. What are the cultural or religious implications for you?

Morally you may still be considered a virgin as it were rape (why do yout hink that may be the case?).

If you are concerned about the state of your hymen, you could check using a hand-mirror.

I hope this helps as a start.
