I would like to be able to do a long run without going out and having to worry about time. I don't know how many times I've convinced myself of this, but everytime, I fail. Then don't pace myself and I wear out early.

That's why you have your watch on your arm. Also get familiar with the track so that you know how much have you passed and how much do you still have to run.
