My cousin needs to go to aortic valve replacement. I know that this kind of surgery is not so dangerous and I don’t worry too much. Still, you never know what can happen. But I’m wondering how long can aortic valve replacement last? Would he need to have another one after few years?

I hear that doctors usually say that repaired valve can possibly last a lifetime but the most of patients will require a valve replacement within ten or fifteen years. Biological valves may last 15 years or longer, without decline in function. But mechanical valves are very durable and are designed to last a lifetime.

Linda
I had a bovine (cow) valve to replace my aortic valve in 2003. In the next 1 to 4 years I will have another one installed.
I found that I was weak for 2 months after the operation but then I felt great. The success rate on these operations is very high and getting higher. You will be fine.

I had a mechanical valve when my aortic valve failed from bacterial endocarditis. I was 53. I am 66 now and expect to live until I am 90-95. The choice is dependent on your view of lifestyle altered by the use of anti-coagulants(blood thinners) the rest of your life. Bleeding from a fall could endanger your life. Some people consider that dietary changes are necessary and dependent on INR readings which are frequent (2 times a month usually). My sister is a Director of Cardiology and told me to adjust my medication not my diet. I think that is good advice. I also test my INR at home which is convenient, esoecially if you're traveling and can't get to a clinic or hospital for testing. The choice may also consider that a pig, bovine or homograft may require a reoperation in 12-15 years. Mechanical valves will outlive you, even if you got one at 2 years old. I am an amateur athlete and after rehabilitation, went back to biking, hiking, running and weightlifting. Other then taking time toi regain fitness levels pre-surgery, I have no limitation. I did acquire Afib after a redo 3 months from teh 1st surgery due to a recurrence of endocarditis and a poor diagnosis that missed a hole in my heart from the original infection. The Afib is not a problem, as I had a slow heart rate from fitness. It may be problematic as I age due to the rate(which slows normally with age), in which case I will need a pace-maker. So, check with your doctor, but for me a mechanical valve, home testing and avoidance of contact sports or activities where injury could occur is giving me a good quality of life.
