My husband will have valve replacement surgery next Monday. Doctor said that his condition requires the surgery. As I understood blood clots appeared near by and now the valve doesn’t function as it should. This is all foggy for me, I am too worried. What we can expect after surgery?

Are you sure about these blood clots? Maybe something else caused this condition. Anyway after successful aortic valve replacement, patients can expect to return to their preoperative condition. Anticoagulation with a drug like Coumadin may be prescribed for 6 weeks to 3 months after surgery for those with biological valves. For those with mechanical valves it will be prescribed for life. After the wounds have healed, most patients should experience few if any restrictions to activity. A patient will require preventative or prophylactic antibiotics whenever having dental work. They should always tell a doctor about their valve surgery before any surgical procedure.
