Valium has a relatively long half life - measured in days, not hours. It takes about 5 half lives for a drug to be out of your system, so you're looking at a week or two there. Typically valium stays in your system for about a week. In addition, one of the metabolites of Valium, desmethyldiazepam, has a half life of 30-200 hours, so it can be around for a long time. The drug test may detect this metabolite. Of course, your boyfriend souldn't take a drug not prescribed for him, because that's illegal as well as dangerous. Showing the tester a copy of a prescription, or a note from his doctor, will explain the positive result if it occurs. It shouldn't take six weeks, a lot sooner, but he definately doesn't want to take anything else to be on the safe side.
