Basically, my body kind of gave out a month ago and I ended up pulling my hamstring (resolved quickly), flaring up my IT band (still iffy), and sustaining some sort of tendonitis in my groin region or potential stress fracture in my pubis ramus (getting this further checked out with a bone scan tomorrow). This injury has fully prevented me from running for the last two weeks, hence no marathon.

Anyway, my basic question is, why was my training buddy able to do both marathons and why could my body not handle it? She has been running longer than I have, is that part of it? Is it possible that I just am not physically capable of sustaining high mileage, or is there something that could be adjusted to allow me to do so? My sports med doctor says my shoes are good for me (they are Brooks Adrenalines and I overpronate). Also, once you have had an IT band problem is it going to continue to be an issue for the rest of your running career?

I love training for and doing marathons so I want to be able to keep doing them, plus I don't want something like this to happen once I amp up the mileage again for Boston. Any advice for how I can help my body sustain 50+ mile weeks?

I'd bet that you didn't give your body enough recovery time after the Portland marathon. 2 months isn't much time, and given the slew of injuries you had, you probably tried to ramp up the mileage too quickly after Portland. I'd say until you get your body acclimated to running marathons so closely together, you should have at least a month of recovery after the race. Limited, easy running. If you try to jump back to 50mpw a week after the race, that's too quick in my opinion. Your partner may be better conditioned, in part because of a better running history, or she may be younger or more able to bounce back quickly.
