My sister has hyperthyroidism with her pregnancy and has really not been able to get out of bed or couch for 2 months. She has been in hospital twice with getting fluids already and the doctor has her on the last kind of medication she can take for this. They have tried others. She has lost 30 pounds and I am worried for her. She also has twin girls 4 1/2 years old and I try to help with them as well. If anyone has anything to share with me so that I may try to help my sis please let me know as this is very hard on the whole family. thanks kelly

Hi Kelly,

I am really sorry to hear this. It must be hard for everybody in the family right now.

The thyroid is affected by pregnancy from the HCG hormone. When it is produced in the body and when it reaches its high peak, it can cause hyperthyroidism. It is not that often but it can happen to some women. The problem here is that this can cause many adverse effects like spontaneous abortion or preterm labor. Stillbirths and low birth-weight babies can also result from hyperthyroidism.

What medication is your sister receiving right now? You said that they were changing the medication several times. Diagnosing this disease can also be complicated thing because pregnancy can affect the blood tests.
