I have 3 kidneys and uterers. I have had nothing but problems all my life. Bladder and kidneys infections left and right. Plus the reflux to where the "flaps" left the urine recirculate through the kidneys instead of "cleaning" it. Does anyone know where or whom to talk to. I am tired after 36 years of this.[/quote
Try Doctor Bauer, Bostons Childrens Hospital, MA. My daughter has 3 kidneys and has nothing but trouble, and all the urologists here only see kids 18 and over! He helped us after 4 years of pure hell, utis, back pains and headaches.
Good Luck

Hi I have 3 kidneys as well. On right side i have 1 inside the other. Just found out I have kidney cancer in the outside right kidney. They will be removing that part & leaving the little 3rd one as it is clear--no cancer. Therefore I will still have 2 functioning kidneys. I too have been in & out of hospital since age 4 to clear blockages in ureter of little kidney, am 40 yrs old now & thank god that there is that extra kidney. All things happen for a reason, & I believe i was blessed with three kidneys(even with previous problems) so that I will still have 2 after this operation.

Wow! Tough time finding this site. My eldest daughter, now 18 had infections starting at 4 months old. I was told I was not cleaning her properly when I changed her diaper. By the time her sister was born, she was almost 4 and had 11 UTI infections. One was misdiagnosed as a STD. My husband and I were both horrified. Thankfully, it turned out to be another UTI. I did notice that her diapers were so full when she wet. Since I am an only child I thought I was not watching her closely enough. Also, she was not able to potty train. A few years passed and she seemed fine. No more infections and she was potty trained and in school. Her sister was 3. We were sent to Germany. My youngest had a high fevers and started vomiting a lot. We were told by the military doctors that it was the change in water, food, meat, etc. Finally, the youngest was so sick I told the military that I was going to call my congressman in the states if something was not done. She was sent to a German hospital and the doctor asked me if she had three kidneys. I replied no. The ultrasound person insisted he saw an extra kidney and ureter. She was on IV antibiotics for three weeks then we were sent to Walter Reed. Since the eldest had a history, they ordered tests on her too. The youngest has three seperate systems. She also had reflux that she grew out of. Antibiotics until she was about 6. My eldest had four systems. Two on each side. One side has the ureters in a sort of spiral, twisted. She was also on antibiotics for a few years. Neither child has a horseshoe kidney that we hear about many times.
My youngest is healthy and goes to the restroom a lot. The eldest has a streached bladder because of all the work her kidneys do. We have to make her go to the restroom and we use to measure it in a hat. Now she keeps herself on a schedule.

The outcome for both girls is fine so far. The eldest had a dye test last April and it was amazing! ( I am now going to school to get my BSN at Oklahoma University.) The residents loved watching her kidneys working too. Both girls renal systems are at 100%.
The Doctor at Walter Reed was Dr. Papas and I think he is at childrens in Philly,PA USA now doing private practice. Her doctors at Oklahoma University are Frimberger, Campbell and Kropp. They can be reached online and can steer adults in the right direction worldwide. I hope I helped someone. I also hope that everyone here has a successful outcome. Kidneys are so very precious. By smoking and getting high blood pressure I have harmed my own. And though I do not want to preach, I feel that my second hand smoke could not have been good for my girls. I had a heart attack last june and do not smoke now. ( And yes ladies and gents, one can go to University full time two months after a heart attack and be over 50.) My girls multiple kidneys have given me direction in life.

From what I have read, the ear anomalies were on the outer ear and had nothing to do with infections of the ear. It seems that one hospital did renal exams on children that had large, cupped or pits and tags. What you or I might call an odd looking ear if we noticed it. These patients had renal ultra sounds done and had various renal problems including horseshoe or duplicated kidneys and other renal problems. I may not have read it throughly, but it seems that no ear aches or infections were involved. I hope this helped.

i was born with three kidneys and a bladder that was not draining urine properly. eventually when i was five after numerous kidney, bladder, and ut infections,(several hospitalizations and a coma that lasted a couple of days, due to an extremely high fever from a kidney infection) one of the kidneys was deamed as nonfunctioning and it was removed at the same time that my doctor performed surgery to repair my bladder.

i am now 26, between the age of 16 until now i havent had to many promblems with any of it, outside if an occassional infection. i also have three children and i didn't start experienceing dark discolores urine or the nagging constant back pain until just a year ago. i'm really scared to go to the doctor and get tested because i've been through the stints, and i.v.s, and extended hospital stays before. i dont have hypertention or diabetes. i've tried researching the "three kidney" thing online and i've found nothing, except for links to kidney disease, is this really what's happening to me? does anyone know where i can find more information out about this or if it the " three kidney" thing has a name?

I only found out that I had three kidneys when I was complaining of lower back pain to my doctor. I was around 22 years of age. He had me undergo an IVP and when I went back to his office, I saw the images before he came. I noticed a double kidney on the left and one on the right At first I thought it was a shadow or maybe a tumor but no, it was a double kidney on the left joined at the last few cms and with only a single ureter. On the right, the kidney was a single.

In terms of bladder infections, they were after having pretty frequent sex in my 20s and 30s but not really that often maybe three altogether. I worry a little when I have lower back pain in the kidney area but no real problems. When I have a bad cough though I had no bladder control and pee my pants - not pleasant!

I always thought maybe having three or more kidneys or any other multiple organ might mean that the person was a twin in utero and then absorbed the other parts. Not sure and have just started investigating this topic. If I found out anything else, I will post it. My best to all of you who are suffering other problems because of your extra kidneys and ureters.

i am a college student studying to do medicine and a few years ago i kept kept getting cystitis over and over, i had an ultra sound and turns out i have 3 kidneys, with 3 tubes going to my bladder, they all work and are all the correct size....i was getting a lot of infections simply because there was more to get infected, but cranberry juice and cold water with lemon squeezed into it are both super good for flushing out your kidneys. i wee a lot and alcohol and paracetamol run throuhg me so much quicker than everyone else!!

Hi;
I have three kidneys; two small but functioning tandem on the left side and a normal size on the right. I had trouble as a youngster with repeated kidney infections. Those subsided when I became an adult, and as a result of more exercise, began consuming more water and the kidney infections stopped.

I now am 57 and having difficulty sleeping with ankle aches and often having to get up during the night for trips to the toilet. This is all new and I'm going to see my doctor next week.

During my pregnancy 16 years ago it was determined my baby had "an irregular shaped kidney". More and more tests were done and it seemed ok so we all agreed to leave it alone unless we saw any problems. After my baby was born, we did ultrasounds but still only saw the same. She did not appear to be having any problems from it, so once again, we decided to leave it alone.

Throughout her life (probably more age 4-12) she's experienced mysterious abdominal pain. Every time we had it looked into I would bring up this kidney issue but we were never able to make any kind of connection, and never really came up with any answers either. We started passing it off as being connected to nerves/anxiety.

Now for the past couple of months she's been feeling sick and nauteous on and off. Last week we brought her into the hospital with abdominal pain she equated to an 8 on the pain scale. At the hospital they did a CT scan to rule out appendicitis and, again, I brought up the kidney issue. They didn't seem to find a connection, but ruled out most other things.

Since then, we've had the Urologist review her test results and he believes the irregular shape is actually a third kidney that likely is not functioning but possibly getting infected over and over and causing these problems. We will see him again in a few weeks for more tests and a final determination. If it is a 3rd kidney, it is said it will have to be removed....

Any thoughts? ?

I am 53 years old. Born in "medical dark ages" with three fine kidneys, but prone to infections, I found out at age 50 I had the condition. Experience/research has taught me that above average water intake and low sugar diet, coupled with mod. exercise vastly helps this condition. I process drug therapy for infect. and anesthetics differently. Low mineral water and careful sodium intake, plus diet, can help slow down kidney stones. A good renal specialist is MANDATORY. Mine said 3 kidneys makes me 'superwoman' + relieves toxins. SO, COURAGE! We are unique.
