I'm so glad I'm not alone with this issue. I am a 14 year old female and have had this problem on a couple of occasions. I have had two sleepless nights so far because I could feel my heart beating so heavily. It's not going too fast, but I can feel it. I don't know what to do when this happens to help myself sleep, if there is anything. If anyone has a tip for how to sleep when this happens, please let me know.

I'm 'guest' from 5 months ago.

I did the holter monitor and echo cardiogram and saw a (supposedly quite good) cardiologist and he says there's no way there's anything wrong, only a 1/500 of me having an MI in the next ~10 years. I've googled around and apparently other people have this same 'problem' without doctors being able to offer answers, so I would suggest to anyone who has a heavy heartbeat to see a doctor/cardiologist, and if the doctor/cardiologist says theres nothing wrong (and you're not feeling any pain from the heavy heartbeat) to just accept it as a harmless quirk of your body and not worry about it.

To those having trouble sleeping: lower your sodium intake, exercise each day, and look into Lunesta (an expensive sleeping pill, a generic will be out in 18 months when the patent runs out) or Xanax to take before bed that will take your mind off of it. You could also try sleeping semi-upright in bed with a pillow/wedge to lay back against but I could never fall asleep this way.

hi there, i know this is an old post but I too have a very heavy heartbeat as described in previous posts, after ECG and echo exams Ive been diagnosed with both Syncope and Bradycardia with the possibility or brugada syndrome, anyone with a heavy heartbeat, expecially if accompanied with ringing in ears or headaches should see a cardiologist straight away

hi everyone I am 32 years old and have same thing everyone has described. done all tests and everything is normal. i believe it to be one of two things. the more i thought about it the worst it got. when i was highly stressed it seem to happen allot more. but as i relaxed and tried not to worry so much it had gone away. i also possibly associated it with drinking red bull and certain foods, hope this helps somewhat but i too have tried everything and cant see, to pinpoint it.

Hello, I am a 31 year old active athletic male. I had this problem for years and also saw doctors and had my heart scanned and everything and had no bad results from any doctors. It seemed to be all linked to stress, poor diet and no exercise.
About 18 months ago I drastically changed my life style by slowing down drinking by a good 90 %, exercising 5-6 days a week, eating healthy (low sodium, sugar/carb , no fried foods, lots of produce and protein) and for the most part it has gone away. Occasionally I get it but it's after or during a stressful day of rushing from one thing to the other and also after more then 1 or 2 cups of coffee during one of those days.
I am in the best shape I have even been in and the thing that is worrying me now ( I know I shouldn't worry too much) is I am getting a little pain along with it and if i sleep on my back I sometimes wake up gasping for air or feel like my heart has completely stopped while I'm asleep (I know it hasn't, it just feels hat way).
So I.m off to the doctor next week. If anybody has any info or thoughts on this it would be appreciated.
I will respond after my doctors visit..
Thanks

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! When you aren't hydrated enough, your blood becomes thickened and your heart has to pump very hard to push your blood.

You may also be deficient in magnesium and/or calcium. A goo one to try is Citrical Plus. But even that may not have sufficient magnesium. But since magnesium can cause the trots, it is best to use magnesium oil (magnesium Chloride Brine) topically. It isn't really an oil at all, but a supersaturated magnesium and water solution that feels like baby oil. Use a couple teaspoons daily on arms and legs, or have massaged into back.
(a side benefit is that mesquites hate it!)

Another problem may be the need of a chiropractor. If your upper back is out of alignment it can affect your heart.

I suffered the same symptoms as you several years ago. I always noticed improvement after seeing the chiropractor. He put me on Citracal Plus and it got better, but didn't go completely away. Once I started using the Magnesium Oil, it finally did. The oil will also reduce your blood pressure a bit.

I hope this helps. I know it is a bit disconcerting to hear your own heartbeat for extended periods of time!

Just a quick update from my post about a month ago. I mentioned that I believe bad diet and being overweight are at the very top of causes of hard heartbeat. Since my post I've almost eliminated completely diet sodas from my diet and I took up running laps around the track. My weight still hovers around 195 but my waistline is slimming noticeably and I feel more energetic than I have in years. I thought I was getting enough exercise with my tennis and gym visits but after realizing how much effort it takes for me to run laps this aerobic exercise seems to be much more effective than anything else I've done in at least 7,8, or 9 years.

Plus, the best news from all this is my hard heartbeat is almost completely gone. Now I'm sure that even modest diet changes added with serious aerobic exercise can practically solve this riddle. Hope this helps.

My heavy heartbeet started two weeks ago during a flu.  My doctor took an EKG and Xray and determined that my heart was enlarged and sent me to a cardiologist.  I just came back from EKG and Cardiogram and cardiologist stated that my heart was healthy.  119/80 and pulse of 60.  I have now quit smoking (errrr) and began taking one a day vitamins.  The only thing that has helped me was reading this thread and realizing that it's not just me and I'm not going to die.  The cardiologist said if I was really worried to come back in two days for a stress cardiogram but now I am going to skip that test.  I am still a worry wart (trait of left handers) and purchased my own BP & pulse meter just to monitor during episodes.  The weirdest thing is that when I started reading this thread I could feel my heart and now it has subsided...hopefully for good <3

I'm 29 yrs old and also have heavy heart beat too. Especially when I lay down or sometimes even when i'm relaxing i can feel it. Sometimes it will beat so hard that it will wake me up. I was wondering if high blood pressure will cause this. I also notice that my diastolic number is very high too. Also sometimes, i'll wake up and the whole room will be shaking or spinning. It's very scary!

I am no expert by any means so just take my experience as exactly that and nothing esle. I have had an extremely heavy heart beat at night for many years and it has distracted many many nights of sleep. It will actually shake my body and it is absolutely annoying. My lifestyle of running and swimming long distance, eating healthy along with a pretty low body fat percentage...my heart does not require much effort to pump the blood through my system thus having one extremely hard heart beat. My heart rate will drop to 29 while alseep. I have had many tests done because it concerned me. I hope that you find answers to your heart concerns. All the best.

I have almost the same symptoms with heavy heartbeat and body shaking especially at night. Have been to the E.R. and the doctors many times and found nothing else to be wrong. At the time of the heavy heart beat, my blood pressure will shoot up but an hour later it will be fine again.

I have started having this problem, but only in the last week or two.

It all started when I stopped taking citalopram (celexa) suddenly, which is an anti-anxiety pill that affects seratonin levels. I had a huge amount of issues going off of it-dangerously low blood pressure, nausea, dizziness, vertigo, and of course depression. I actually ended up in the ER with the blood pressure issue and had to get an IV. I have since gotten back on but it's only been about a week, and it takes two to get fully back into my system.

I am fairly sure this is what's causing my heart to beat so hard, and hopefully it will go away soon. I just thought I would post and see if that could add any other piece to the puzzle. Also, I know it isn't caused by dehydration or high blood pressure, because I tend to have low blood pressure and stay hydrated pretty well.

I had the same problem for the past year ever since my schoolies week, At first it was an on and off sort of thing but became regular and more violent towards the middle of the year, By this time I was freaking out and nearly passing out from being light headed and just utterly sick of it, I had dropped all alcohol and caffeine from my diet as these were triggers, I was admitted into hospital for 4 days in which this time was I was put on a 24/7 heart monitor, ECG, blood tests ran, blood pressure tests, x-rays and even some professionals come in to hear my symtoms, But everything was fine, Too make sure I was 100 percent they put me on a holter monitor for a week when I went home, A few months later I had an appointment with a doctor who told me he had reviewed my results and found that the top chamber of my heart's electrical currents were giving off unessessary currents that reacted with the bottom of my heart forcing my whole heart to randomly speed up and be heavy, This caused my whole heart to become super sensitive to anything that forced it's normal beat to change eg. Alcohol, Caffeine, too much sugar, The only way I was able to sleep at this time was because I was prescribed aniexty pills that relaxed all of my muscles (With your heart being the biggest muscle in the body) This helped me sleep very well, But in the end there is a way to fix all of this, There is a light procedure that they are going to perform on my heart where they twilight sedate you, Put an electric wire up your groin all the way up to your heart whilst you are hooked up to an ECG, They then manipulate the electrical currents in your heart to find out what part of your heart is causing this, They then burn the bad parts away (Whilst you can not feel any of this because you are in twilight sedation), After this you will be able to return to normal with your good sleeping pattern and desired diet, But I for one will not consume anything that could put me in a similar position again, Hope this helps

Hey.

I'm 16 years old and have been feeling similar symptoms. It all started back when I had an allergic reaction in which my face and groin swelled up and i got itchy all over. I took a steroid shot and then was put on the same thnig in pill form (prednisone). It finally went way, only to come back again around a month later. I again took prednisone and when the allergy was almost completely outof my system, I got a much larger dose from my allergy doctor to finish it off. The whole time I was taking allergy medication every day like benedryll. After this whole fiasco, and a couple times during, I began feeling the heartbeat strong and fast symptom. Feeling it in different parts of my body. It got worse, though, a few weeks later when I moved from California to New York. It continued to get worse and after it was much too long to still be a sideffect from the medicine we went the the doctor. He sent me to a cardiologist who checked out my heart and blood. Everything was normal, blood pressure, stress test, heart muscles, etc. I was then sent to a lung doctor who also found nothing wrong with them when he examined me. It has been months now and it iseven worse. I feel it pretty much all day and every day. Fast heartbeat, strong heartbeat, etc. I feel it in my wrist, hand, arm, legs, chest, stomach, and even my butt. I feel my whole body shaking with my heartbeat when sitting down or laying down (in class, at night, etc). I am also getting chest pains every now and then, sometimes when I breathe in deeply, like a couple days ago my chest was really hurting with sharp pains when I breathed in. I am set for an Heart Electrician appointment in four days but I need to know why this is happening and how i can stop it. It is driving me crazy. It scares me all day long and I think about it all day long. I am very worried. Please respond. Thanks.

Don't let these doctors tell you that you have an anxiety disorder! I went through all of the same things as everyone here! They tested my heart a million times and told me I was fine. They offered me every type of anti anxiety medicine around. Nothing worked! I didn't find my cure until I found out about ADRENAL FATIGUE. This is what is causing the strong heart beat, panic attacks, anxiety for no reason, muscle twitches etc. As soon as I started treating myself for AF most of the horrible symptoms slowly went away. Its been 6 months and no more anxiety. No more panic attacks. I can still feel my heart but it's very faint compared to before when it used to shake my whole body. I am so grateful to have figured this out, and no doctor will help you. They don't believe the condition is real. But obviously it is because there's so many of us suffering! Please do yourself a favor and research adrenal fatigue.

Get off the meds. Get yourself on high doses of powdered vitamin c. Change your diet. No more sugar or processed foods. Lots of water with high quality sea salt. Eat organic as much as possible and go to bed early. Meditate. Pray. Do whatever you need to do to reduce stress. Trust me people you're not alone, and I am living proof that it's not all in your head and that this condition is real! Take your health back!
