i have had mine for almost two months, its been ruining my basketball life.
i saw a chiropodist twice, no anesthesia, surgery. it hurt like hell. got better over the next few days. but then it got stomped in a basketball game, then it got worse than before. the chiropodist did it again, and then covered my nails with silver nitrate.
i bought new shoes. and if it doesnt work this time i'm getting my toenail removed from the side so it can grow back in/ permanently removed

Definately. Although the shot stings a little, it is not as bad as when you bump your toe with an ingrown toenail. Even if there are issues getting your foot numbed up, it's worth getting it taken care of right away. (The last time I had an ingrown toenail taken care of, we discovered some of the nerves in my right foot do not respond to the anesthetic.) The surgery only lasts a few minutes. I actually was able to drive home every time, even when it was done on my right foot, without it being fully numbed.

I had my ingrown toenail removed other day. I was scared cause i heard the needle would hurt so my mum got me some numbing cream to put on 1 hour before the injection. i took my psp along with me and when i got there she asked me questions then said Take a deep breath! and i did. i felt the needle go in and i began playing Everybodies Golf on PSP and becuase i was trying for a hole in one i was concentrating on the game, not the pain. It didnt hurt at all. then when the procedure was being done i didnt feel anything other than very small pressure. they put phenol on toe to stop nail ingrowing again. i had ingrown for abut 1 year, the procedure took about 30 mins and now its never come back. well worth it. im 13 years old ^^

I had procedures on both of my big toes to get rid of my ingrown toenails. For years, they would swell or bleed and hurt until I finally went to a podiatrist at 17.
The podiatrist removed both sides of either nail, still leaving enough to that I had a normal looking toenail. Then he killed the nail cells at the base of the nail with an acid mixture to prevent it from growing back. My toes both healed completely in 4-5 weeks and I was able to go back to waitressing a few shifts after the first week. There was throbbing to the area after it healed when I exerted myself or was standing to long, but that went away eventually. I am very glad I had it done. My right toe healed perfectly. My left toe still has a rough nail edge because I didn't go back to the podiatrist for a follow-up, I was away at school at the time.
The numbing shots to the foot (there are two per toe) were very painful. It felt like the podiatrist shoved the needle in and then turned it sideways.

the surgery is really helpful because it relieves you of so much pain and they use annesia to numb the toe so you don't feel a thing. You should really get the surgery

i had the surgery two days ago.
for those who have been procrastinating and feeling scared, PLEASE go see a doctor.
i tried to deal with my infected ingrown toenails for over 3 years. it was like an on-again off-again relationship. like the ingrown would grow, then the swelling and blood and pus, i wait for a few weeks until the nail is soft then i trimmed it myself. this worked for a while until 3 months ago when i noticed that my toenail had gotten so thick i cannot manage it on my own. at first i decided to just ignore it and thought that it would go away like before but when i noticed that the surrounding skin was turning purple, i thought it was high time to see the doctor.
my thresh hold for pain is very very low but the key word was I HAD TO DO IT. I was scared that the doctor would scold me for waiting for so long. when the doctor saw my infected toenail he said they had to remove the nail right away so as to avoid further infections.
yes, the shots we a bit painful. i think they finished a whole bottle of local anesthesia on my big toe. i screamed a lot because it was my way of dealing with the pain but it was not really that bad. my husband was with me the entire time and he held and squeezed my hand really tightly for each shot.
a TRICK i usually do is i PINCH myself at the same time as the injections so my focus would be on the pinch and not on the injections. it works all the time.
it's been two days after the surgery. it hurt quite a bit yesterday mostly because of the throbbing but 2 paracetamols did the trick. i was also given anti-biotics.
i have to go to the hospital or dressing and cleaning for 7 days. this actually is more dreadful than the operation itself but i have to do this.
not everybody has to go for surgery. just go to your doctor and have it looked at.
good luck

I've had an ingrown toenail for about a year now, and I'm getting surgery on the 26.. :| I think he's gonna remove my whole toenail. I want to know if I'm gonna be able to walk? Or if the best thing would be if I got crutches.
btw, I like in a house with 5 kids. Most of them are really young, 4, 2, and 9 months. I also work at a daycare.. haha
When school starts shortly after in September, I'm also going to be walking to school.
I kinda also wanna know how it is to get dressed, if it's difficult. I only own skinny jeans, so that's all I wear. lmao :]
If someone can please answer me that'd be great help. :-D

im 13 and have 2 ingrown toenails, 1 on each foot. 1 of them is infected though. i went to see the doctor today and they said i would need to go to the hospital to get the sides surgically removed. at first, i didn't think anything of it. but after reading about it and realizing everyone's past experiences, even my dads own experience, i am too scared to go ahead with it now. everyone has said the needle at the start to numb your toe is the most painful, after reading this i am terrified about going. i am literally crying right now about it. i would rather just have ingrown toenails for the rest of my life than go through with this. i am so scared i dont know what to do. is there a possible way to have this procedure done without the painful needles? please let me know asap please if you have any info or help. Thanks.

Hey guys...I had a ingrowing toe nail when i was 12..i am now 14 and think it is coming back...
I filed my nail because i was scared of it happening again the over the Christmas period it started getting swollen there was puss coming out of it but it doesn't hurt at all...I've been using antiseptic cream and bathing my toe.I remember when having one at 12 it was a ball type thing that bled...well this doesn't bleed at all,i'm on the fence here.I can remember getting my foot stood on before my sats and it making my sock dripping wet like i said...no blood this time just a bit swollen. Is it worth going to the doctors to put my mind at rest or should i just use the cream? (i don't wonna go and have the bad news given to me AGAIN ;[)

I just had my ingrown toenail removed about 5 hours ago. i'm 20 and extremely afraid of needles. I had two shots of lidocane(numbing) and each lasted about 10 to 20 seconds, it stung a bit but was over really quick, that was the worst part. you can not feel anything after your toe is numb. the removing of the ingrown nail takes minutes and they wrap it and your out the door.
I was extremely nervous the whole time but i had a great doctor and nurse.
you'll be fine.
