I don't know if my answer went last time so I'll repeat my remedy, make sure you don't forget your blood pressure medication or fluid tablets, drink lots of water and place a wheatbag which has been heated up in the microwave for 3 minutes with a cup of water (so the wheat doesn't burn). Place it on the cramp whilst laying down and the cramp eases almost instantly. Hopefully there is someone there to heat up the wheatbag for you as it is too painful to walk. I keep my wheatbags handy as Ican't live without them

Wow; Scary. I'm a 52 year old male in good heath. I walk 2 or more miles a day. My first attack was last night. I walked my dogs though some heavy brush for 2-3 hours. First time out like that in a year. Pre-season scouting. I had a small meal of fresh salsa(homemade), unsalted corn chips, and a beer. Took in a little TV, showered and went to bed. About 2 hours later I woke up in pain. I went to stand up and it got very bad. I nearly had big boy tears. I yelled out loud for several minutes and could not stand up. I rubbed my inner thighs above my knees with-out relief. After 5 minutes or so it started to subside. Today, I still feel some pain where my muscle was pulling on my femer. My wife suggested apple-cider vinagar, magnesium(Calm powder in water), blue-green alge, and alot more water. She is a heath nut of sorts so of course I follow her suggestions. I will be back to report on this, and read other posts on this subject.

My daughter is type 1 diabetic and just turned 10 years old. She too suffers from these severe cramps. I am looking for a cure and/or way to help prevent these cramps! Any advice or diagnosis would be greatly appreciated! We find that giving her salt by mouth and once she is able to walk she sits in a hot tub of water and massages salt scrub over the area usually help the pain.

I am up at 2:40 in the morning trying to see if anyone else experiences the pain I am experiencing with innner thigh cramping(for lack of a better word).. I am somewhat relieved to see that this is something other people experience. The things I can relate to is: Drinking lots of coke or working a lot in the heat and not drinking enough. I would like to know what a wheatbag is. Someone describes using this and I have never heard of it. I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences. I don't feel so alone in this suffering.

Hi, great to see all the replies, I am a doctor (Family) and I can verify that it will be useless to go and see a doctor for these. I get them myself and it is the worse pain I have ever had, that includes having chest tubes removed. I have had them for a couple of years now but the one 2 nights ago sent me googling for more info. I had bilateral inner thigh (Vastus Medialis) cramps so severe I would have called an ambulance if I could have moved to get to a phone. They are way worse than any "Charley Horse" type calf cramps and they are nothing to do with restless leg syndrome. so I really appreciated the input from those with this incapacitating syndrome. I can only relate ageing (65) hypertension drugs, possible deydration (worked outside in hot weather before this last one and didn't drink well), and personal lack of flexibility (might work on that). Other than that I will myself try some of the stretches suggested but could not move to get into some of the stretch position, i.e. I was unable to get standing up, I had to lay on the floor for 15-30 minutes in agony (bilateral thigh cramps) and got quite nauseated with pain and then seemed very thirsty at intervals. I will certainly follow this site with interest.

inner thigh cramp. A wheat bag is just a bag any shape to suit yourself filled with wheat. it is heated up in the microwave for 3 minutes only on high with a cup of water. it is a heat pack and can be used on any aches or pains. I have one that I tie around my hips, another for my neck. they are easy to make. they work like magic. never ever forget to take your mecications for blood pressure and fluid tablets. If I do I know I'll get cramps. not the cramps in my feet calves or anywhere else, I can tolerate them but when I get inner thigh cramps I scream with the pain and our home is in uproar trying to find my wheaybag. I also get them if I drink too much coke and not enough water. Good luck

While I am sorry that anyone else has these, I have found the posts very interesting. I have had these for some years and do find that Neurontin helps me. I had a terrible bout early this morning and again today. I had run out of the Neurontin so that has convinced me that it helps. Also, I only get these in the leg without a knee replacement-any correlation?
When I read the posts, I find that there are some commonalities that I share.
High blood pressure on medication
Hypothyroidism
Perhaps a problem with circulation since heat helps....I do have some diminished circulation in the lower extremities. I have some neuropathy.
I look forward to more posts.

Wow!!! I'm neither alone, nor crazy!!!
Unfortunately, all I have to contribute is my experience.
Mine only occur in one thigh at a time (you never know which). It always happens at night & probably 75% of the time, sex would initiate the event. I'm a flexible person, possibly slightly above average & can usually reverse a muscle cramp with no trouble - not these! I can't recall trying the exact stretch mentioned previously, but I'm hard-pressed to think I missed trying that one. All that has ever worked to any degree for me was heat and/or pressure. If the onset allows, I run to the shower & apply hot water or wrap in a heating pad. Sometimes it hits too fast & all I can do is grip or massage & try to counter-stretch 'til it weakens enough to let me get up. As a preventive measure, I have experimented with compression (tight neoprene thigh wrap) & it seems to help. The problem is, you never know when it will strike!

I, too, suffer from those awful, painful thigh cramps. I was told, by my dad who gets leg cramps, to keep V8 Juice in the frige and drink a couple of cans when I get the cramps. There is a lot of potassium in them and I understand it is caused by dehydration and lack of potassium. It really seems to work and also works for lower leg cramps. Good luck !!!

I am a 49 year old woman and I have been suffering from severe thigh cramps regularly for about the last seven years. The pain is excruciating, especially the inner thighs. I am posting this because last night was by far the worst episode I have ever experienced. Both legs were involved and each leg had at least seven muscles cramping at the same time: inner thigh, top thigh, upper calf, top shin, ankle, top of foot and toes. I know it is hard to believe...I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't gone through it.
Every time I tried to stretch one out, another one twisted tighter. I was helpless to move. My husband rubbed my legs furiously, but didn't make a dent. I began to pass out, then would be brought around by intense pain. I was nauseated, and I kept yawning involuntarily every few seconds. I could do nothing for myself, including standing up, but scream and cry. I was ready for hubby to call an ambulance, but I knew by the time it arrived, the cramping episode would be over, as an episode only lasts about five to ten minutes. After the episode, I have bruising from the muscles bleeding after being torn so badly, and limp the next day.
I do know that these cramps are related to a combination of dehydration and over exertion, usually from standing on my feet for six or more hours. I even told my husband when we went to bed last night to be prepared, because I would probably get a cramp during the night. I knew I had dehydrated and I tried to push down the water (apparently not enough). I have noticed they occur in my right inner thigh mostly, and more often right after I have been sleeping on my left side.
I have tried many things to prevent them, but nothing seems to work all the time. I wear cotton leggings or long-johns to keep my legs warm at night. I take a hot bath before bed if I have over exerted during the day. I try to stay hydrated. During a cramping episode, I have tried many things. For cramps in the inner thigh, I stand with my hip next to a wall, about 12 inches away, and lean my hip to the wall, my hands above my head to support myself. I also walk a lot. For very bad episodes, I place salt in a spoon and place the salt under my tongue. It seems to fool the body into thinking it is getting electrolytes. I get into a hot bath and warm up my leg muscles. And I walk a lot to try and walk the cramps out.
The episodes have gotten worse in the last couple of years (I even lost a significant amount of weight and thought they would get better with the weight loss, but they did not). Like the other posters, my blood work is fine. Medications do not seem to make a difference. I wish I knew what was causing them and how to permanently get rid of them.

I have been reading about the inner thigh cramps. I have had them and charley horses too. My doctors have been watching blood clots in both my legs. Had the untra sound, x-rays and went to a vein doctors. Seems like nothing they could do but on my own I found that they happen at night. I would have a snack before bed.And later they would flare up. The pain is just out of this world. They only last for about 3 minutes or so. Then I thought, maybe not eating before bed may help. DO YOU KNOW THAT WAS MY ANSWER. For about 6 days now , I eat NOTHING before bed and I do not have the pains. But a few times I did get the charley horses, but they are not too bad. Just walk them out. NO inner thigh or the front of my left shin pains, which was very painful. I do not know why this is working, but it does. I hope they may help someone else. :-)

Hello, I know how bad these cramps are. I was having them. They would wake me up out of sleep. The pain is wicked. I also got front shin pain all the way to my big toe. The toe would actually raise on it own. That was that pain. Then the charley horses also. Because of blood clots in both legs because of meds I was on .Not on those anymore but have to go on something else soon because of muliple myeloma. The cancer is doing better, but for this. Went to doctors about the cramping , took untrasound, x-rays, they said the blood clots would not cause the pain and my veins looked ok. So I was getting them only at night when lying down. I remember that if I eat any food they would come on. So for 7 day now ,I do not eat anything before going to bed , nothing after 7:00pm. And I DO NOT GET THE CRAMPING. I did get a charley horse but no bad.Maybe try not eat before going to bed. It worked for me, even today. How you find relief if this doesn't work. :-)

I've had foot and leg cramps from time to time for years, but never an inner thigh cramp until recently. Three times now, I've been awakened o.O with them, and no knife could hurt as much. No wild animal tearing the flesh from my bones could hurt more. I wouldn't have believed others that anything could be so painful if I hadn't experienced it. As for the causes....I have a bad back, have had surgery once and need it again. I sleep on my side, with a pillow between my knees to relieve the strain on my lower back. Just before these cramps started, I tossed the old pillow and bought a new, fluffier one. I think the extra inch of pillow thickness was what caused my cramps. I've also been working a job that requires lots of bending, stooping, and light lifting. I think I need a new job and a new pillow, because nothing made those cramps go away until they were ready to go away.
